Yeah, no need to stress about Finnish people judging you or looking at your body in a weird way in the sauna. Inappropriate behaviour in sauna? Unacceptable crime against basic decency and the spirit of sauna. Not going to happen. For Finns, sauna is definitely not a place for romance, sexuality or judgement in any way.

As a swede i totally agree. Saunas is pretty much like a "holy place" 😄 Idk if its just how we are up in the north of Sweden where saunas are extremely common or if we're just like the Finns overall (not as crazy when it comes to taking a sauna obv, but the mindset of taking a sauna). I personally (and everyone i know) cant see anything "sexy or romantic" with taking a sauna, i just wanna relax and enjoy the heat and clean my body from all the dirt from my pores and dead skin etc. I also dont care what people look like, if ur naked or not, but i do respect peoples privacy or if they feel uncomfortable being naked or simply just taking a sauna with the opposite sex. I prefer being naked in a sauna, but sometimes im not due to other peoples insecurities (especially around their bf/gf) when we're a bunch of friends taking a sauna.

Sauna is kinda part of my religion, so you can take it like sitting in a church; You won't yell, curse, be rude or judgemental to person sitting next to you. But you can talk about anything to share experiences, difficulties to ease the stress and or what ever... For me it is debriefing of the week (I usually have a sauna just on saturday evenings) Warmly welcome to Finland, I hope you'll have nice visit!

Sauna is the great equalizer in Finnish culture. Everyone is naked and without titles. Even in the military, ranks does not apply in the sauna. A privat can sit next to a general and he is not obligated to salute or sir him while sitting in the sauna bench.

I'm a Finnish woman married to a chivalrous Swede, which was weird to get used to and I've had to negotiate that I get to DO things without him trying to 'help'. It was a real culture shock and it took a few conversations for him to understand that I feel weak/useless unless he lets me do things without offering to do it for me. Self-sufficency is very important to me

Finnish girl here. I met my man in a bar over 10 years ago, still living together and have a little girl together now. About men paying on dates, I don't mind if the man pays for maybe 2-3 dates, but after that I would also like to pay for something. If a man is too polite, like opening doors or pushing the chair for me when eating or so, I would find it a bit weird and maybe even a bit turnoff. But that is just me, I know other girls who would love it or let a man buy for everything as long as he will pay 😀 About sauna: When I was in my 20s and single, I would go to mixed saunas naked in party or someone's summer cottage, didn't bother me at all. Being naked in sauna is totally normal and usually same sex people go together, so there's nothing to be embarrassed ☺

In Finland conversation is about transferring information. We listen carefully to be able to provide an actual meaningful answer. We don't reply just to keep the conversation going. Talking over somebody is considered rude as we value each other's opinions.

I have met many Finnish women, and as a Swede, I can only say that they are incredible. Beautiful, independent and clear about what they want. Scandinavian women are more difficult to decipher, this is not the case with Finnish women, much more direct. If they just want sex, you'll understand early on.

I am a finnish woman. It's okay if someone wants to pay for a date, but not continuously. I wouldnt feel comfortable, it has to go pretty even in the end. And also opening doors and such, seems a bit awkward and needless to me. I am cabable of opening a door. Like if someone is walking in or out of the door at the same time than me, obviously we will hold the door for the other person but the gender doesnt matter. My ex said to me that when i let him carry my grocerie bags for me, he knew we were serious :D We are definately a hook up culture. I think all my relationships have started like that, or via app. Flirting in sauna sounds horrible, would be super creepy.

That a man is supposed to open doors and carry bags for a woman is a symbol of expectations that the woman is very weak and the man is her strong protector - and that he can expect her to adhere to his wishes and requests, since she needs him. I'd always open a door for anyone behind me or in need, or help anyone with a heavy bag if needed or, for example, if they've carried several bags for a while and my hands aren't already too full. Including dates. That's helping out a fellow human and should be expected by anyone able. Male chivalry is basically part of something destructive, general kindness is a good thing, but sometimes they can lead to the same actions.

Holding the door open for someone isn't really that common, but what people do if they are nice and they see that someone is coming also through the door. You kind of do an extra push on the door that it keeps couple of extra seconds open so that it wouldn't completely close before they get to the door.

For me it feels like freeloading if man pays everything everytime. I don't think the gender if I open the door for someone. I started thinking if the past wars have something to do with women used to cope without "man saving the day" 🤔 And I must say, the silence depends so much of a person. I've been told many times I talk too much 😂 And if you are with a good friend, you can talk all the time (but silent moments aren't that weird either).

Hey! a Finnish woman here shares her own experiences and opinions.🙋‍♀️🇫🇮 the best dates have been just as functional. Botanical garden where you can marvel at the flowers, super shop/ Market to look at goods and things. My husband and I had our first date in nature where we went for a walk on a nature trail. At the same time, gathering mushrooms and then frying sausages and buns, making coffee on an open fire. Our second date is for a barbecue, so it doesn't really have to be fancy. as long as it's nice. it's quite normal to ask about expenses in Finland too, I myself have asked if you want me to pay for my own lunch etc. and acted according to the situation. of course, at the same time you get an idea of whether there is interest on both sides when you can read the situation. Sauna can really be compared to behavior in church. You should behave calmly and with dignity there, and you can confide your own affairs and concerns there. I could never imagine anyone flirting in a normal public sauna, it would be inappropriate. There are separate so-called gay saunas, which is why people go there, but I don't think you have to do anything there either. Chatting in the sauna is ok, but I rarely start a conversation myself. at most I ask if I can throw more slush. sauna scents must also never be taken into a public sauna.

In sauna everyone is very vulnerable in a way, so I think thats why i dont feel that anyone is judging my body there. That is very body positive in a way, even though people DO judge people's weight outside of sauna 😂🥹 and yea, definitely NO flirting in sauna. People do have conversations of course, but everyone knows that being nude has nothing to do with any sexual elements. I would be so uncomfortable if someone started flirting with me, it's a very taboo thing to do in a sauna, i think.

Sauna can be either a quietly enjoyed experience, or that one exception where Finns get very social and talkative, depending on the situation. People can definitely talk in the sauna, and it's often the location for really important conversations since there is no place more honest and open than a sauna. And people have fun, joke and sing in sauna as well, it doesn't have to be serious at all. But anything sexual in a sauna is highly inappropriate.

For me the perfect dating starts similarly than building any friendship. We need to have some similar interests and shared values. So, the perfect first date could be for example a mushroom picking trip to the forest, ending to a lake- or seashore and an open fire to make coffee on.
@sannita2007

Few answers: no sex in sauna. For example Christmas sauna you should never talk or flies bother you all summer. I’m a woman and I prefer share the cost in first dates. Can be that the man pays for dinner and then we go to have dessert in another place (little walk in between) and I pay the coffee and cakes. We walk a lot with friends too. About the silence: it’s like giving others the gift of peace and silence, being loud is impolite. And sauna culture is also different from one family to another. For example if a group of friends has gathered somewhere and there is a sauna, people normally have a conversation “who goes first” for example women first, men second or men first, then mixt and then women. So everyone’s preferences are respected. In public swimming pools we have women side and men side. There are big saunas and we bathe with strangers naked. If I went to summer cottage with my bf and dad, they would probably go together and I alone after them. And apartment buildings that have just one or two saunas for all, have some men /female turns (apart the hour one can reserve for private use) so we go and meet our neighbours in saunas. Naked.

I think it's weird if a guy opens the door for me or pays my dinner. I'm no damsel in distress and don't wanna feel like I owe the other person something because he paid for my food. You open the doors for old people and it's always polite to hold the door open if you're using that said door yourself and you see someone coming. Especially if it's someone older, someone with small kids or someone with heave grocery bags. I've once in my life experienced the situation where someone pushed the chair I was trying to sit on. Felt very weird and wrong and had to ask them to let me move the chair myself. Finns like to be independent on everything they can. It's very hard to ask for help as you don't wanna be a burden to other people. That's why we have sisu.

Ugh, that always bothers me: "Oh no, we laugh about that, were not happy!" It doesnt measure the amount of laughs and smiles! It measures how happy your life is, like youre not starving or freezing, low random violence, low police brutality, low corruption, free healthcare, free education, no traficking, or if you get unemployed or disabled, you dont have start begging &c. I guess Finns have gotten too used to happy life. You can really live your whole life without never really having to think: "What if..." Grr, I have spoken.

The best date I ever had started out with me picking her up and going to one of the historic sights in my area where we went for a long walk, I showed her some of the sights and told her about the history as she was not from here, towards the end of the walk I asked her if she wanted to go to dinner and she said yes, so we went to my favourite restaurant in town and had a really nice dinner which I did pay for but I think she payed for the after dinner drinks, then we hung out at the restaurant which is also a bar for a couple of hours just talking and having a really nice time, then I brought her back to where I picked her up from and we hung out there for another couple of hours, we didn't hook up or anything we just enjoyed eachothers company In total the date lasted about 13 hours as I picked her up around noon, and before I left in the evening it was at least 1 am, It is still to this day one of my best memories.

Mixed saunas are most usually private ones. In public saunas men and women are separated. Steam sauna is an exeption because in some public swimming baths there might be a steam sauna where men and women are together. Then of course you have to cover yourself. There is a public natatorium in Helsinki where one can also swim naked but as you can expect men and women have there their own schedule. I find that reasonable.

I'm the last person to ask about dating, but personally I'd feel suspicious if a man would buy me expensive stuff / treat me to a fancy meal on a first date, as if he was trying to show off or possibly had some ulterior motives. Something simple with a shared cost feels more honest. Getting expensive treats also makes me feel pressure to repay the gesture, so the cost being high just makes me feel uncomfortable and like I don't deserve whatever it was that I've been given. It's different if you are already in a stable relationship of course, as then you know the person and trust them to give you those treats because they love you and there isn't as much of that "transactional" feel to the gesture. As for the sauna culture, in the past it was common for everyone to go to sauna together, but now, especially in cities, most people take turns, so men go together on their turn and women go together on theirs. But some people still go to sauna as a mixed group, since nudity isn't seen as anything sexual there

It was in the Turku Archipelago and natturally we went to sauna in the evening. Foreign male students did not dsre to bathe in all male sauna. They appeared frightful as a few middke aged ladies well wrapped in big towels stepped out for a cool drinl and some fresh air. Our female star lectturer needed a swimsuit and a towel, to come and sit in the löyly. I felt sad when I realised how complicated life is for many.

Dwayne, it matters when you come to Finland. I recommend coming between June and August. And it's definitely not worth staying only in Helsinki. Tampere and Turku are also good cities to visit. It would be best to get a Finnish travel guide, because you won't get to know the local culture without a Finnish one. You just come around the tourist crowds and think you know something about this country. You know nothing about it. We Finns have so many different rules of behavior that you can't possibly know how to interpret situations correctly what a Finn means. You will only feel hurt, even though the Finn behaves according to his own rules. Outside Helsinki is very different rules.

Around 17 000-20 000 Finns live in UK. Around 6 000 Brits live in Finland. Considering the populations, it's probably easier to come across a Brit in Finland than a Finn in UK. Here's a video on some British football players playing in Finland (at the time): "Swapping Staines for Europa League: Going Pro in Finland". Couple of notable Brits in Finland: James Finlayson: "Tampere - History and Heritage". Neil Hardwick: "Hello Hello Hello 01", "Neil Hardwick, Michael Palin, ja Lasse Lehtinen saunassa (1989)" and "A Tale of Two Countries - Neil Hardwick". Journalist, politician and author Lasse Lehtinen-there with Neil Hardwick and Michael Palin in the sauna-was made a Freeman of the City of London in 2007. Jim Pembroke: "Jim Pembroke / Hot Thumbs O'Riley - Wicked Ivory TV Interview Scenes (1972)" and "Wigwam - Freddie Are You Ready (TV Promo, 1975) ". Raymond Ebanks: "BOMFUNK MC'S 2019 | DOCUMENTARY | VP MEETS | TEASER" and "Bomfunk MC's - (Crack It) Something Going On (Video)". Robin Hull: "Robin Hull | Tour Card, Stephen Hendry & A Ranking Event in Finland | Tampere Shoot Out". And finding Finns in UK: "Trying to find the Finnish church in London", "Inside The Moomin Shop, Covent Garden, London! What comes to nudity, we shouldn't overlook the Germans. From what I've gathered, they may have strict sauna rules, but elsewhere they are pretty loosey-goosey.

I am a Finnish woman, and when a guy doesn't pay for both on the first date, it's a sign of cheap, and it is not a good sign for me. If he pays the first time then I'm happy to pay a half or even the whole bill the next time. I don't expect opening doors and helping with jackets or chairs, if he does it all the time it is weird.

I am a Finnish man, and if a woman expects me to pay on the first date, there won't be a second one. I don't mind paying, I do it all the time out of my own will. I don't appreciate it being forced on me. I want my partner to be an equal, and demanding men to pay in a country where we all make our own living is not a good sign to me.

Of course we are ready to go to sauna naked, with people that we meet for the first time. But NOT with members of the opposite sex!

If there is a big family gathering, it is ok. Public saunas are divided to prevent harrassment.

Part of the silence is due to afraidnes of speaking english. You must remember that it is as difficult for a finn to learn english as it is for a foreigner to learn finnish.

Not entirely true.. It's definitely easier for Finns to learn English because of society and culture. There are no dubbed Tv-programs (except for kids) and everyone is more or less exposed to the language in everyday life on a daily basis.

@evahernberg2624 I agree with this - and other opinions as well. My English is good, I mostly read in English and can pronounce everything nicely. However I hate every single mistake when speaking or writing as I do now so I'd rather use my own language.

Hook up is common if you seek just for casual sex. Not so much if you try to seek for longer relationship. Depends what time of the year is going on, but going to coffee, dine, ice cream or something like that is always good option. 95% of time i have splitted the bill with my date. Basicly everybody pays them own share. If the woman insist that you should pay, that sertainly gives the message that the woman is spoiled or gold digger. That is never good sign. In that situation i can say that the second date is not going to happen. Well mostly there is basicly men or women going together in sauna, but it depends from the people and friends do you have mixed sauna sessions too. Even if there would be some woman that is very atractive and/or sexy, it would be embarrasing to get boner in that kind of situation. But usually in those situations everyone is relaxed, just having conversations and just enjoys the pleasant heat from the stove. And if you have good chemistry with some female and you go only two of you together than it might be different. So you can make out and even have sex in the sauna if the mood is right for that. Sometimes in some house parties you hook up with someone and you need privacy there. Then it is okay to go with that other person into the sauna and get busy with it 😄. Been there and done that for few times.
