The reason drinking law is 21 is because we have to drive EVERYWHERE. Our insurance companies figured out that 18-20 year olds were getting drunk a lot and getting into car wrecks. They brought the data and the law was changed to 21. If we had the public transportation of Europe we would have 18 as the drinking age.

I remember well, as my insurance premiums went up due to this “data”…then they raised the drinking age. Guess what?!? Not only did my premium NOT go down, it continued to increase.

@@timcaldwell5241There was also a war on teens in general.. a lot of which had to do with the number of war time boys that grew up with fathers in the home, leading to the proliferation of youth violence and street gangs to young servicemen on leave. . . alcohol was seen as the big bad especially in the post-prohibition era, which cynics would say was of those that wanted to bring back the ban in totality despite even the most vehement tended to have medicinal liquor at home. It's like people forget one reason why malls would become a popular destination for youth, they were less likely to be harassed by cops or feared by suburbia in malls than if they were in other public places, where some cities had bans on more than four youth gathering in places like parks or libraries outside of official events. Much of this centuries old.. the new status of 'teen' was a novelty as to what it meant. This adds a lot into the set drinking age... which highly varied from state to state for a longer period than most realize. Albeit, yes, insurance, law, it's still not a federal issue, though govt saw a way to tax it more. it provides revenue... kind of like how the war on drugs is more about asset forfeiture than the plight of addiction. (incidentally, why so many raves got shutdown as federal crimes, escaping taxation... though the media story would be about drugs and underage drinking. People get stupid when it involves youth... hysterical towards their protection, they'll readily sign away their liberties.. whether it's the scam of finger printing your kids on the chance they might be kidnapped vs committing a crime. or stranger danger vs the nsa tapping bypassing privacy laws.) to say remember all the hooplah about how evil building a wall was just a few years ago, they were going to return all the funds that were allocated for it... now it's necessary. They're pushing the drug claims.. but is it really? but I digress. . . still, in the era they changed it, the greater danger for teens as trends went, was huffing gas or burnt cow patties.

@@KieroSi I tend to agree with most of what you said…mostly it’s a real old fashioned concept of the “generation gap”…don’t hear that much anymore, lol! The inability of one generation to understand the next, or maybe just the unwillingness…I’m a “boomer” … I came from the generation that had literally “saved the world”, so looking back, I kinda understand why they thought we were a bunch of slackards…lol But, the whole drinking age thing is primarily a result of an ever expanding government that will use any excuse to control our lives…I know it’s cliche, but I have a real problem with “18” being old enough to die for your country, yet not old enough to buy a beer!!!!!!

Sliced bread was invented by Otto Rohwedder in 1928 in Iowa. His idea for an automatic bread slicing machine was met with skepticism at the time but he was determinated and actually sold his jewelry store to fund his project. Commercially sliced bread impacted the world as with thinner uniform slices people ate more. Sandwiches became popular because it was filling and cheap. Workers started munching them in factories and children in schools. There is an expresion in America "The greatest thing since the invention of sliced bread" which is an enthusiastic appreciation for any new invention or discovery. Like your channel is the greatest invention since sliced bread. 😅

Girl Scout Cookies are the bomb. The drinking age has changed over the years. The main issue was road safety and the prevention of younger people drinking and driving. I was in Hawai'i when the law changed. I was drinking between the ages of 18 and 20, then had to stop for a year when it jumped to 21. Also, me, I only exist here in America, unless i start traveling again...

Black Friday use to be crazy like this…and it might be sometimes still but they really kinda ruined it. They started opening up on Thanksgiving and also scaled back the deals and you can honestly get better deals easier online now on Black Friday and cyber Monday. The last time I tried Black Friday the deals were crap and not worth getting up early and fighting people. The sales people would line up/camp the day before was for high ticket items super cheap but in limited amounts so you had to be the first whatever in the building.

When I was in high school, the voting age was 21, and the drinking age was 18. I believe we lost 5 students in their senior year in my school, due to drunk driving accidents. It's not that kids don't drink before 21. But you also have to factor in the fact that we can drive at 16, and many teens have cars. 🇺🇸

Plus the fact that older kids will buy alcohol for younger ones. Always have. When you can drive legally at 16 doesn't mean you can drink responsibly. 18 isn't any better. Girl Scouts are called Girl Guides in the UK. The cookies are only sold by girls ages 5-18 and teaches them how to handle money and the basics of creating and running a business. So, that is why you won't find them sold in the stores and you can only get them from Jan-Apr usually. You can get Girl Scout cookie flavored things in the off season in the stores though....like Samoas ice cream, or Thin Mint flavored powder for toast or popcorn.

As an American, I've never understood pharmaceutical commercials. They charge extortionate amounts of money for their medications and tell consumers that they may be able to help if they can't afford their medications while simultaneously wasting millions of dollars on commercial advertisements and corporate executive emoluments. (Gee! It's too bad that I can't trust my doctor to tell me about the medication if I'm suffering from an ailment that it can cure or treat.) I've also never understood advertisements for different medical groups. I'm pretty sure that wasting a healthcare organization's money (i.e. my money as a patient) on advertising is going to generate more business. I mean how am I supposed to know what to do or where to go if I break a bone or get sick, or if a neighbor collapses in their yard?! 🙄 I don't know which makes the least amount of sense: pharmaceutical commercials, healthcare commercials, or electric companies/coops advertising their services.

Even if drug companies didn't advertise on TV and print media, they send their representatives to doctors' offices to educate them about the drug, to provide them free samples, and to give them perks like meals, holidays and free cruises. They can say anything about the effectiveness of the drug (true, or not). Drug companies are absolutely not our friends, but we can't be certain that the doctors have the correct information either.

I've never understood why we have pharmaceutical commercials either. I can remember a time when we didn't have them. People just trusted their doctors to know which medicine was the best for them. Then again, we also have elaborate commercials for women's and men's underwear. Sometimes I wonder about how desensitized we have become as a nation to everything.

The Boomer generation are old now and will not do the leg work to research their medicines. They will watch their shows and see a commercial to fix a problem they have and buy. They will ignore the side effects. So, if an old guy is promised less pain in his joints, he'll ignore the fact that he could also go blind in one eye and lose his sense of smell. It's only by law that these adverts have to say, "consult your doctor."

As an American, I will say trusting the doctors here can be pretty sketchy as well. The pharmaceutical companies send their sales reps to most doctor's offices, or set up trips in popular vacation destinations(Las Vegas, Miami, New York and the like), and the companies will pitch their drugs and other products to the doctors. The drug company reps will take the doctors out to high end restaurants, supply them with free samples(the first hit is always free), set up fake consulting contracts to pay off doctors to use their products, or just straight up offer doctors financial incentives for graded scale payouts according to the volume of their drug a doctor has sold. Not only is the American health system the most expensive in the world, it's practices are extremely corrupt, to the point where people need to be concerned whether their doctor is doing what best for them or what's best for the doctor's own bank account. It really is one of the most shameful aspects of American society.

Our healthcare overall is great but some doctors will hand out the most rediculous scripts. I had bronchitis easy normal script for me would be Albuterol, Prednizone and Amoxocillin, Doctors see that I have a new insurance that is really great.... for visits.... they give me a script for a trial antibiotic that cost over $200 not thinking that most insurances don't cover or barely cover scripts. My pharmacist called the doctor and told them they better change it or I wasn't taking it. The doctor fought for a bit but finally gave in. I loved that my pharmacist went to bat for me and hate that the doctor tried to force me to take an expirimental drug when there was no reason. I get bronchitis at least once a year. I know what works for me. They also gave me a script for Vicodin which I didn't want or need (And yes when he asked if I needed a pain killer I said no, he gave it "just in case") because I have an over-reaction to certain meds. Ibuprophen is good enough for me.@@jordanparker5949

Pharmaceuticals are corporations out to make money. Before there were laws and regulations put into place here, they could put whatever they wanted in the "medicine" they were selling. Now at least that is regulated somewhat. It isn't just the ads on tv's that they use to market to people either, each manufacturer has people called sales representatives that actually go visit doctors so that they can talk them into prescribing more of their medicine vs another manufacturers medicine, even giving them gifts and giving samples of new drugs (often the most expensive and most untested medicine option) to the doctor to prescribe to people. While the medical field typically denies that these things affect their decisions for treatment of patients, there has been multiple studies that have shown that the interactions between doctors and the pharmaceutical companies and reps do affect the treatment of patients.

I am an American living in Belgium, and we definitely have multiple kinds of white bread here. You do get some pre-sliced, packaged bread, but I haven't ever looked at those to see if they're like American ones. I go straight to the fresh bakery bread, which has all kinds from soft, squooshy (but crispy crust) white through every form of sourdough and multigrain to very dark and heavy black bread. Also, white bread existed in Europe long before it came to the Americas (only to be eaten by the richest people, of course). Probably America was who mechanized the process and turned it into processed, pillowy cardboard, but that's like saying nobody else has fries (which the Belgians invented) because McDonalds made them so popular in the US. Oh, and also Japan and Korea are obsessed with the softest and whitest of breads, and with doing very peculiar things with it.

I knew someone who bought a TV at Walmart two weeks before Black Friday, and found out it sold for $2 less on Black Friday. Girl Scout cookies are only sold mid-January to mid-March. The Thin Mints when they're kept in the refrigerator are even better.

Some people will line up ahead of Black Friday for specific sales, but I've done that for concerts. If you can get a smart TV for half price TODAY ONLY, you might line up. Oh, and Girl Scout cookies are that good, and are only available for a limited time each year! They do freeze well. I mail Girl Scout cookies to my daughter in the UK every year. My grandsons descend upon them like locusts.

The drinking age used to vary state to state. I lived in Indiana - drinking age 21, but Michigan was 15 minutes away - drinking age was 18 there. This was in the 70s.

I have never told a doctor what to prescribe me. The drinking age used to be 18 or 19 but it changed to 21 due a group called Mothers Against Drunk Drivers(MADD) lobbied Congress to change it to 21 in the 1980’s. As far us using the “imperial system” of measurement, it sounds like it was you who changed to the metric system, so you change back.

A couple of years ago on Thanksgiving. A couple of stores opened at 6pm. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner, set the table, told everyone hope it tastes good then went shopping. The sales can be crazy good and limited quantities per store. But now most big stores have black Friday sales all month long, so the craziness is not bad.

Garbage disposals: are easy to install and remove..especially if you already have a dishwasher and pretty cheap here, one can be had for less that $100.. If I moved into a flat/apartment/house that didn't have one I'd install it myself.. The switch might be problematic, but if there is a light switch anywhere near the sink its doable.. if there's a ban on it? put it in anyway.. pay the fine if you get done..

Not drinking alcohol until you are 21 is somewhat of a misnomer in the US. There are situations where minors (people younger than 21) can legally drink. Often these exceptions are for cultural or religious purposes, such as drinking for communion at church. Similarly, some states (such as Minnesota) allow parents to let children drink alcohol at home as long as the minor has parental supervision and is within the home. So it would be legal for parents to serve children wine with meals. But each state / territory would have a different standard for this.

Black Friday sales can be fabulous, esp with electronics (TVs, computers, laptops, pads, etc) and video games. The reason people line up the day before is because there is a limited number per store. If you want to give little Johnny the game that's coming out for Christmas, and the store only has 10, you like up the day before. I have never done that but it's really common.

4:00 yeah that's ridiculous....I can understand charging for refills for alcohol, which costs more, but soft drinks are really cheap to make and dispense. Plus, with soft drinks, that's not the main thing they're selling (they'll selling hamburgers or whatever). No reason for refills not to be free 🙂 6:00 I got the opposite problem. When I got out of USN I was 135, now I'm like 190 😞I need to get in the gym for low impact, easy on the joints workout on stationary bike (there's a jogging trail in a park within walking distance but I have this weird nerve injury in my foot, I don't feel most of the time but if the foot is subject to high impact I definitely feel it...dr says not much to be done...nerve regeneration is not well understood.) As far as drinking, I drank about an ounce (29 mL) of expensive Napa valley wine when I was like 7, but I spat it out immediately, it tasted metallic. I have drank a couple times since then, but less than six ounces in my entire life, because I can't stand the taste, nor can I stand the thought of being drunk....I don't know how people get past the taste to get drunk! So nasty. Even $600/bottle Beringer wine tastes nasty to me, and Beringer is world class (Beringer is also from from the north end of the San Francisco Bay), on par with wine from the Champagne region of France. (some Europeans don't like to admit it, but the USA does in fact have a lot of high quality, artisan food, that was created here in the USA.)

What we know as white sandwich bread today was a thing all the way back during the French Revolution (about a generation later than the American Revolution). When Marie Antoinette said "let them eat cake!", she was referring to plain white sandwich bread rather than something resembling birthday cake or muffins because white bread was way easier and cheaper to make (this was at a time when the french poor had to resort to eating dirt and gnawing on leather). To this day, plain white sandwich bread is sometimes also referred to as cake bread because it's classified as a sweet bread (which, confusingly, is completely different from sweetbreads like Amish friendship bread, fruitcake, or banana-nut bread).

iirc Imperial measurement is based off "useful" measuring devices like the width of your thumb, length if your foot and length of stride, that way you could measure approximate length with out a ruler. I would assume liquid measurement and weight are the same, though they don't line up in base 10 like metric.

American cheese is not synonymous with spray cheese. Spray cheese actually comes in different flavors. Also, those individually wrapped slices that people think are American cheese says right on the package that it's "cheese food", which is another way of saying "fake cheese". To be realistic, Americans typically never put the quantity of food they showed in the garbage disposal. The most common usage is to scrape our plate first, then the garbage disposal takes care of whatever is left when we rinse/wash the plate. Especially now that city yard waste collection takes food scraps.

These videos never mention it, but the U.S. Congress did pass a law switching the U.S. to metric in the 1970's. However, they made it optional for each state, and they didn't offer any incentives. California made the largest effort, posting road signs in both mph and kph until 2006, when they finally gave up and started just using mph again.

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. It's the day most retailers go "in the black" instead of "in the red" (meaning they turned a profit). Competition is fierce. Britain's history is different and they don't have Thanksgiving. But really you should start it up. It's a great holiday for family and friends. It's not like you're doing anything else that day. Canada has a Thanksgiving too, but the harvest season comes earlier. They celebrate it in October instead of November, for practical reasons. Canada's Thanksgiving really doesn't line up with Black Friday.

In many states, the drinking age was 18. Then the federal government was trying, so they say, to prevent drunk driving and wanted the age to be 21. In 1986, the feds basically blackmailed the states to agree by saying they would lose 10% of their Federal highway funds if they did not comply. During the Vietnam draft, a push was made to make the voting age 18 because you could be drafted into the war at that age. Therefore, you should have a say in policy if you’re having to put your life on the line. So voting and drinking are two different subjects with two different thought patterns, and some federal bribery. Therefore the inconsistency.

So our white bread is different (more sugar, a lot) than most other countries that sell it because other countries have stiffer regulations on that. What's going on with Meg's feet in that clip was diabetes! It's really advance stage but some diabetics can lose a foot or feet if they loose circulation and if they get a cut or something after that. My husband has diabetes and that is one thing we ensure we take care of because you lose circulation and feeling, then you get a cut and are unaware of it then shit goes DOWN hill fast because diabetics aren't able to fight off infection as much. As for the girl scout cookies, also think of this as well.... they go on sale ONE time a year for a certain number of weeks (usually January through April, but timing is always different every year. Last year was 16/1-12/3) and then they are GONE until next year (its part of the marketing). Its a massive fundraising for them that is highly successful. I usually buy from a few local troops to support them. But I always buy about $100 worth if not more from Troop 6000 they are a unique troop that serves the New York City Shelter System and provides a tiny bit of normality, consistency, and joy for kids in a difficult situation. But what Americans know is Girl Scout Cookies are very easy to freeze, so we usually get a ton of thin mints and shortbread to freeze then we get tagalongs (peanut butter and chocolate) and samoas (shortbread with caramel, coconut, and chocolate) which both can be frozen but they don't last long. But I buy so much because I love supporting this plus I love them and I have two daughters who come and raid my freezers when they come home to visit from Uni, nothing lasts. Of course we drink before 21, you learn the tricks you friend "older" people in uni and it happens. My eldest (20) was sniffing the whiskey I get from a local place which I make a Scottish trifle with yearly and she tried some with my permission. She was "this isn't as bad as I thought it would be, the last stuff tasted like what I assume gas would taste like, she then tried to back step and I laughed and said "if you aren't drinking in Uni and being responsible about it, then I'd be surprised. I am not naive about their actions and when she attended her boyfriend's sister wedding at 17 I gave the OK for her to have her first champagne as long as she didn't have more than that. LOL, pharma commercials, one thing in America you grow up learning and understanding is that the health care system RARELY cares about the person they are "helping" its about profit plain and simple. If you have a chance, watch this playlist 30 Days of US Healthcare on www.youtube.com/@DGlaucomflecken he really shows how even if the doctor cares, there is other challenges for us to deal with.

Yeah I'd have to concur with previous comments about the drinking age. Once upon a time, the drinking age was 18, but I'm sure it was raised because there was a dangerous uptick of deaths as a result. I mean, have you seen how illegal drinkers act? Hahaha. I believe, if I remember my history right, the voting age was lowered to 18 because it didn't seem fair to draft 18-20 year old men into the armed forces, forcing them to serve their country, but they still couldn't vote. Therefore, the voting age was brought down to 18.
