As an American, the only thing I hate when foreigners say is the phrase, "Americans are so..." then insert some derogatory word like rude, arrogant, loud, fat, stupid, greedy, ignorant, etc. Of course, there are a lot of Americans who that is true about. I know some where all of those are true, but there are 350 million of us, so no negative trait is universal or uniquely American.

One thing I've never seen mentioned but is important (though more of a don't do than don't say) is that you need to be aware that there is a wide degree of tolerance levels when it comes to how protective Americans are about their property lines. Don't cut across someone's yard as a shortcut unless you know the owner is ok with it. In some areas it's not such an issue, but in others, you can be in for a world of hurt if you step onto their property without being invited.

To answer your tip question: you don't have to tip. No ones gonna confront you. The staff might care but they're not gonna say anything to you. You definitely don't tip at fast food like McDonald's. Basically, if it has a drive thru, it's fast food so no tip. Taco Bell and Del Taco are fast food, but authentic Mexican food places which you walk in and sit you probably should tip if you can.

What happens if you don't tip? Not much usually. Often customers are gone before the server even sees what the customer has tipped. It's setup that way. You'd have to hang around after paying the bill a long while to have any kind of confrontation at most establishments. Yeah, it's looked down upon generally to tip less than 20% for dinner. However if a server is just awful it's not unheard of for someone to leave a tip of 0.01 USD just to let the server know you didn't forget the tip but actually hated the service. It's also common (less common today) to leave a lower tip if the service was suboptimal. All that said, most people tip well and being a server at a high end, popular restaurant is often a well paying job. Even a low end but popular establishment is often a very good wage from the tips. Hell, even pizza delivery can be a great wage for a university student or anyone needing immediate work.

Money, body image and politics are touchy topics in most countries I’ve always thought our hyper patriotism stems from us being a land of immigrants. If we didn’t think the US was great, most of us wouldn’t have moved here. It’s also a commonality among people who may not share language , religion or culture norms. We can all agree - Go America! Now, I don’t think there is any “best” country. You can love your country but also appreciate other countries. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Oh, AMEN to this comment! I whole heartedly agree. I don't know why some very well educated folks don't put this idea together. Since many people came here from many countries where some can only find fault with us, but clearly love their own country, are want to criticize this in us. We are an easy punching bag. The ones that express it with disdain and intolerance are not a credit to their own fellow citizens. I won't put all of any one country into all one category. It's not common sense, but is unkind.

Tipping waitstaff is important in American culture as most waitstaff makes wages of $2-3 American dollars. They literally make almost zero dollars with the wage because the taxes are taken out of that minuscule paycheck. Most of us who have worked in that industry, as most teenagers get their start in the food industry, have had zero dollar checks. We have had a family of 4 adults and 6 kids (as an example) at a table with high demands and their kids dumping food and/or drinks all over the floor and tables. They won’t say anything to you most of the time but, it definitely helps to feel appreciated for the hard work that was given. We remember the ones who remember us. ❤😊 Side note!!! 😂 OMG!!! The Steve Buscemi line about, “I don’t tip” is HILARIOUS to me!! My mom worked in a casino where his movie “Con-Air” was filmed. After filming, he would play Craps at a Craps Table right in front of her cashier cage. He tipped my mom and her coworkers along with buying them dinner each night. He is a VERY kind and generous man. ❤

This is just common sense. You don't ask anyone anywhere in the world how much they weigh or how much money they make. You also don't make rude remarks comparing your country to one you are visiting. Same with feet, centimeters, inches, are easier to visualize. For example 6 foot 2 inches is a lot easier to picture than 1.88 meters or 188 centimeters. I know both I liked metric because when it comes to math but most things I encounter daily imperial makes more sense to use if you know it.

You generally don't tip until you're leaving the restaurant, so not much could really happen since you've already gotten your food. Generally if you pay at the table, you leave the money as you're walking out so the waitress would never know it until you're gone. If you paid up at the front and didn't tip you would probably receive a bad look. If you tried to return to a restaurant where you had not tipped, it's quite likely that they would remember and give you terrible service.

Hamburger or ground beef as we know it, originated in Hamburg Germany. But the first hamburger sandwich, a hamburger patty between two pieces of bread with or without other condiments, originated in two places in the 1880s. And is highly debated because one of them originated in Wisconsin and was a meatball between two pieces of bread and the other one was in Texas and was an actual hamburger patty between two pieces of bread. So you could actually say that the hamburger did originate in the United States however hamburger AKA ground beef originated in Germany

If you didn't tip in a regular sit down waitstaff restaurant someone on the staff will probably stop you on your way out and ask you if there was a problem with your meal or service. If you tell them you "just don't tip" they'll probably just stare at you. But don't EVER go back to that restaurant. If you are too broke to tip, go to a restaurant that doesn't have waiters and waitresses bringing your food like McDonalds where you don't have to tip.

More and more places that are take-out specific have tip lines on the register when you check-out/pay your bill. They sit there as you decide whether or not to tip them for the non-service they provided. I usually tip 5-10% for that... but its purely out of social pressure/guilt. Very rarely would I go to a sit-down restaurant and not tip 15-20%. Some places want 25% plus though and I'm not doing that.

I was in the service industry for many years and tipping was 10%. Minimum wage plus tips. The country didn’t feel obligated to supplement our income because the restaurant didn’t pay us enough. That’s life. Our issue and if we had to get another job, then that’s what we did to pay our bills. And that was during a recession. Don’t let anybody pressure you into giving. No one will ever ask you why you didn’t tip. If they do then I guess don’t come back or let the manager know because that’s not OK. Different world now

Nothing will happen initially if you don’t tip. However, if you go to the same place repeatedly and don’t tip, don’t expect good service. I used to deliver pizzas. Us drivers had a large delivery area so we took 7-8 orders at a time. Most of the time we designed our route based on first order in then whoever was next closest to that order geographically. However, if we knew you never tipped or were always going to give us a hassle, your order would be last. If we knew you tipped extra every time, your order was first on the route. The movie “Waiting” shows a worst case scenario of not tipping or regularly hassling waitstaff. Needless to say, be nice to people who handle your food.

Part of the reason why tipping is so mandatory is because in a lot of establishments they force the servers to put their tips into a pile that whinds up getting equally distributed amongst everybody that works at the establishment in the shift you work with, not necessarily with the person who actually was earning the tips. Or once again leave and just put the money on the table and don't bring attention to myself LOL. I sure would never return to a restaurant that I had left without tipping though. 6:58 Answering the question: what happens if you don't tip? Wait staff/servers in America make an hourly wage below minimum wage. The rate varies from state to state but can be as low as $2.13 per hour. Most paychecks only cover taxes, so a check will come back somewhere between $0 and $10 for a week or two weeks. Servers make the vast majority of their income from tips. Tips are also shared with other front-of-the-house support staff. Bussers, hosts, and bartenders are paid a percentage of the sales of servers. This is called the tip out. The restaurant I work at tips out the bartenders at 5% and the bussers at 3%; thus, the total tip out for me each shift is 8%. This is not 8% of the tips I make but 8% of my daily sales. The assumption is that I should have made between 15-20% of my total sales in tips. When a table does not tip, the server loses money from that table as they are still required to tip out for that table's sales. Let's say at the end of my shift, I have done $1000 in sales My tip out is 8% I will have to pay $80 for the tip out If I get 10% in tips for the day (100-80), I will have made $20 that day. If I get 15% in tips for the day (150-80) I will have made $70 that day. If I get 20% in tips for the day (200-80) I will have made $120 that day. If you don't tip, the server pays to wait on you.

At 61, it used to be uncommon for people to ask what you are making. In the last few years, I feel like it's become increasingly common and a lot of people willingly swap information. This might be more common among lower paid employees, not sure. But it's about trying to figure out just how much our employers are screwing us over or where better opportunities are. I don't mind people asking me, although I never ask. Seems like a lot of people readily share what they earn. Knowledge is power when job hunting.

I think it depends where in America you are going I think most of the list here are exaggerated oor not that dramatic. Basically treat people with respect and kindness . Most likely if you would find it rude or offensive, we would too. But because we have many different cultures and races, I think we are pretty open minded and use to hearing and being asked all kinds of things. Unless you just meet a really rude, uptight, prudish, person, I think you'll find most of us friendly and welcoming. But probably not so much in New York City, New Jersey, Chicago, and Boston. You find the Midwest very friendly and most of the Southern states to be very laid back and friendly. The further north you go the more people are fast paced. We talk faster and expect things to be quick and efficient. On the West coast I'd say pretty much anything goes. The East coast is very varied. In the New England states people are going to be the closest to being most like Europeans. New York and New Jersey are gruff and hot tempered. Once you get t the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, there will be a major difference in the pace of life and how open people will be with you. In the Central US and West, I think you will get a mixture of people. Some will seem laid back and some will be more like northerns.

Employers that negotiate with each employee separately don't want them comparing, because then employees in the lower range will start saying, "Well you're paying Bob X, so why not me?" I always thought that was shady on the employer's part. However, companies that pay based on the job (often union, but not always) don't care.

Re: what would happen if you don't tip: you might ruin your server's day. I've known servers who were throttled for hours by demanding parties - they ran up bills of $200-400 and only tipped like $5. That hurts even worse when it's a classy place with affluent clientele. Tears and lost sleep would be likely. Sometimes bad tippers argue that "the restaurant should just pay them more", but in order to do that, the restaurant would have to increase prices significantly, which would absolutely drive customers away. Another common argument is that "servers should just get better jobs", which seems maaaaaaybe just a little classist... maybe they should STFU and cook at home instead of inflicting themselves on us peasants. Hospitality is one of the industries I think about when I see reports that the US is the worst country in the world for workers' rights. It's a physically and emotionally demanding line of work here, hospitality workers can be treated very poorly by customers and employers. A lot more goes into than just shuffling plates around and taking orders. If you plan to return to a restaurant frequently, tipping well is a good way to ensure that servers know your name and go the extra mile for you. I tend to lose faith in humankind rather quickly, but some of the most reassuring stories I've heard were hospitality-related. My old friend Regina was getting kicked out of her roommate's house so their partner could move in, and was in desperate need of $1500 for a security deposit -- she didn't have any other options, and it was obviously weighing on her at work. A couple of her regulars (a local older couple she knew on a first name basis), noticed and asked her what was wrong. She was reluctant to tell them about it, but they coaxed it out of her, and that evening when she cleared their table, she found that they'd left her a check for $1500.

If you don’t tip, you’ll become known to the workers and won’t get good service, and most people will think you’re a jerk. Some places might ban you. You tip at dining places, beauty salons, barbers, donut/coffee shops, some hotels, resorts… it’s usually easy to know where it’s expected because you’ll see a jar labeled “tips” or you’ll see a spot for it on a copy of your receipt which you’ll have to sign and return if you use a card. Most people agree that if you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford the service of the worker and should cook your own food instead; however, if someone is obviously homeless or something and wants to spend what they have on a good meal or a haircut, I truly doubt most any worker would be upset to serve them for no tip, maybe even free.

I think for the most part if you don’t tip, you will probably receive very slow service or last priority the next time you go. It’s mostly viewed as being stingy or self absorbed. Fast food places don’t need tips from what I understand but anywhere that you sit down and someone comes to the table needs a tip. If you are too poor to tip at the very least 10% (15%-20% is better) then they can usually tell, and won’t blame you as long as you are kind and polite to them. That being said if you are somewhere fancy of your own accord and don’t tip you will receive some looks due to the cash you have to have to be there

In my opinion, as an American, tips are for table service, and other similarly prolonged service (taxi/uber/lift, food delivery, etc.). Tipping a fast food worker is like tipping a cashier for taking your money, it's not the same prolonged service requirement as any other normal tipping situation. I could totally get behind tipping the cooks at a fast food place, but only AFTER I find that my food was done well, which is a bit challenging to arrange transactionally.

However the volume of your gallon is larger than ours by 18.26%. A friend of mine from Ireland thought his diesel SUV got better mileage than a 92' Chevy with a 2.2l and a 5 speed because of that difference. He was getting 33MPG while I got around 32. His was a 2006 something so of course more economical. When I pointed out if I go by the British Gallon which they use in the Republic of Ireland I was getting around 38MPG. A few comparisons to current American cars/SUVs and the conversation was never brought up again. For the metric folk, US gallon is 3.78L. British is 4.54L.

There is a lot of satire and outright stabs at politics of the time. I find all of it hilarious they do a spot on job at nailing the issues also. South Park may look like a poorly animated cartoon but it is not really for small children it is definitely adult humor along with all of Trey Parker and Matt Stones other creations. Even that song they were starting to sing is satire, notice they cut out before the first verse could complete and that is because of the explicit language that was about to follow.

My father while dating my mother took her to dinner in Chicago to a nice place as a treat. It cost more than he expected it to. He had enough to pay for the meal but didn't have anything left to tip. The waiter followed them out of the restaurant crying about not getting a tip. Talking about how many children he had and he had given them good service. My father explained he didn't have any money left. My mother was so embarrassed she finally pulled some money out of her purse to give to the guy. My dad loved telling that story, it became more and more elaborate as the years went by.

Hilarious that Europeans claim the metric system is more efficient but don't understand how we write dates 😂

The US uses the US customary units from the SAE (Society of American Engineers) system which are different from the Imperial system. It was "officialized" before the Imperial system was and so is technically older. For example a US pint is 16 fl oz whereas an Imperial pint is 20. The volume of the fl oz is slightly different too but for practical purposes is the same. A gallon is 20% different in size between the two for example. Almost no countries actually use the Metric System, which evolved over several centuries and has many country-specific oddities and variations. What they use is the International System of Units (Syse international d'unités or SI). There are dozens of measurements found within the Metric System which are not allowed/recognized by the SI. Things like the "tonne" and "litre" are not part of SI but recognized for use with it. The vast majority of other recognized units are not base 10.

What would happen if you didn't tip? Nothing on your first visit, since they wouldn't know until after you left. However, not tipping would indicate that the service was so horrible that you would never want to eat there again. So, if you did go there again, you could expect poor service, and in rare cases, someone might spit in your food, and you'd never know. If you were a regular, things would probably go downhill with each visit. How they handle it would vary depending on the personalities of the wait staff and manager. 8:10 - If you're broke, you're probably eating at a fast food place, and tipping is just rounding to the nearest dollar at fast food places. For most of my life, I never tipped at fast food. However, I've learned that I should if I ask them to make any alterations to the order, such as what toppings, etc.

The only thing I had a problem with was us being 'overly' patriotic. WTF? Most Americans are aware enough too be thankful to live here and display our appreciation of it by being patriotic. Simple.
@jijitters
@jijitters Жыл бұрын
Nah, I'm American and the patriotism is weird and cult-ish. The constant flags and chants and songs are ridiculous, the military is evil and should not be worshipped like it is, and most of the systems we have in place are inferior to many European countries. If I see an extremely patriotic American it's just about a guarantee they're xenophobic.

Bro, I’ve watched a lot of your videos. When you come to the states, look me up. That great smilies drive you said was better in autumn. I live there. Yes the west has a lot, but start your trip the way settlers did. East to west. I’m in the south with mountains and beautiful country. And I love “soccer” more than “American football”.

When you come to the U.S. please tip your servers well. They work hard and rely on tips to survive. Also, there is a saying that goes, "If you can't afford the tip, you shouldn't be eating out..."

@dreadcthulhu5 and then they would be forced to charge their customers extra for doing so. Either way , it's the customer who will pay their wage. They would make less by getting paid by the employer instead of the customer. And they would not have as much incentive to be a great server. I dont know any server who would prefer to give up tips in favor of a set hourly wage. If you're too cheap or poor to tip properly, stay home.

@@wmason1961 It's inflation (and to an extent greed) that is the problem, sir. There are ways to make wages and food prices affordable. None of them involve raising the prices or minimum wage. Perhaps everyone could use a good economics course or at least an hour long lecture from Thomas Sowell. He's certainly discussed this topic before. Also, giving the shitty state of restaurants, food service and food quality itself staying home and cooking food from scratch using what you've grown yourself is certainly a better and healthier option. We as a society have given up much in the dubious pursuit of "modern convenience".

It’s all about the context. Most people won’t get very offended by these things. The weight thing might be an issue if you say something like”oh when are you due?” To someone you don’t know…esp if they aren’t pregnant. The tipping thing…it’s more about how your friends or acquaintances will secretly view you later after if you don’t tip. So if you don’t care about what those who see you not tipping or how employees will judge you then you do you.

The only 2 things listed that might offend someone here are, “How much do you weigh”, or “How much money do you make?” Either way you’ll probably just get a response like, “Nunya”, as in nunya business. The one that should never be done in ANY country is criticize the country you’re in if it’s not your own. That’s just rude in any situation, and IMO socially unacceptable. The other ones are no big deal really. P.S. If you are in a dine-in restaurant that has wait staff, please tip your server. I waited tables in high school, and not only is it harder than it looks, the “pay” Is stupid low. Love your reactions. ❤

If you don’t have the money to tip, you can order your food carry out. Ever since covid, even counter service people expect tips and ask for them. I don’t do that, because they make regular hourly wages, and no one served me. I really don’t care what anyone thinks about it either. In all honesty, a lot of waitstaff are so entitled regarding tips, that their service stinks and then they’re angry if you don’t tip them. If I’m mistreated, my tip reflects it. I let people know how much I make if people ask. I have a very good friend from England, and we like to compare the differences in daily life, including our salary. It’s so interesting to learn about his culture, and he loves to clear up the rumors that he hears about American life. The news about Americans across the pond, is less than accurate to say the least. I’m shocked over the difference in law. It’s almost like property rights, or the right to defend it or yourself doesn’t exist. I’ll take our “gun culture” any day over that!
