I've been to Starbucks, once. Never went back. Coffee was too weak, too sweet and overpriced. I would rate 95% of local coffee shops 9 to 10 out of ten. The other 5% ae still far better than Starbucks ever was.

Aussie here, Starbucks sucks. The coffee beans used are of lower quality, the barrister ain't train well in the art of making coffee. The menu is not based on aussie tastes. It's over priced. Even though their serve is 3x the size of the average cup of aussie coffee cups it still doesn't give the coffee hit you'll get from 1 aussie coffee. Seriously you can get better quality coffee at a Aussie petrol station then what they serve at Starbucks.

Starbucks failed because their "coffee" is crap - and there was always a cafe a few doors down that served good coffee. It was the sort of place you went to once out of curiosity and never went back.

There is nothing quite like walking into your favorite local cafe and having the barista start making your coffee before you’ve ordered and it’s ready while you’re still catching up with the cashier (even in a pretty busy place)

I love the fact I can do that here in Adelaide, South Australia. I don't even need to give my order. They see me coming and everything swings into action. Friendly, civilised and always a good cup of strong quality coffee. And being Australia I don't need to tip, knowing that the staff are paid a decent liveable wage.

Australian coffee culture has evolved so much that a hole in the corner coffee shop in the burbs or a country town offers a far superior coffee experience to a Starbucks offering. I tried it once and never went back. I don’t add sugar to any beverage so it was a huge NO from me. My late mum and I loved to go to Gloria Jean and sit down for a natter over a coffee and scone. I definitely have my own Espresso machine and milk frother and can enjoy a great coffee at the homes of my family and most of my friends.

Starbucks just rather arrogantly refused to adapt to Aussie tastes. I mean, even McDonalds managed to do this - periodically they reintroduce the Aussie Angus or the McOz which have beetroot like any corner store burger here. And if we want super sweet stuff we'll order a chocolate milkshake, not a coffee. They needed to just have quality coffee which wasn't packed with sugar available in a warm sit-down environment where friends could chat. Not too hard..... except for Starbucks.

I don't think that's a fair comparison because Australia never really had a burger culture the same way a coffee culture was been in Australia since the 1930s.

Many Thanks to our early migrants of Greeks and Italians Australians have a more refined palate for coffee than that sweetened or syrupy dishwater that Starbucks serves. That mob in Seattle just thought Australia would be a pushover. Sorry… regardless of any business acumen Starbucks thought they had, once tried, we let our feet do the walking to a better coffee house, end of story.

In 2007 I went to a Starbucks in Melbourne's Docklands once with an American friend ... it tasted like overly sweet dishwater. Never again, it's crap. Not even average, way below average. when I walk past a Starbucks now, they are only in tourist areas like Melbourne CBD, they usually have plenty of people in them but they are usually American or Asian tourists or Asian students studying in Melbourne. I lived in New York for a while in the 80s and found it very difficult to find a cafe that sold half decent coffee. I don't mind Gloria Jeans, the coffee is much better but I'll only go to GJs if I'm waiting at an airport. Otherwise I have my fav cafes that have quality coffee where I know the owners and staff and they know me.

Starbucks came back to Australia with a new strategy. They are now mainly focused in populated cities catering to tourists and international students. Also Gloria Jeans cafes died a horrible death in Australia. You can pretty much find them in NSW and even there, they continue to shut down stores. All because of their affiliation Hillsong church in Sydney.

Personally I think Starbucks was thoroughly humiliated by their rejection by Aussies. How dare Aussies not fall over themselves to get to the American icon. But Starbucks will by hook or by crook force themselves into our country. Aussies don't like Starbucks? Fine we'll take you tourism money instead.

As at September 2023 Starbucks has 69 stores in Australia so they're REALLY doing well! They can blame their failure on the economy, business approach etc etc but the BIGGEST problem is whatever that crap is that they sell is it's NOT coffee! And yes I've tried it - well about half a cup actually because it was undrinkable.

Starbucks tried to open 46 coffee shops at once. They thought they were the best but Australia continually wins best coffee in the world. Theirs is crap and over priced. They started to learn and change to what we expect but it was too little too late. They aren’t gone and they are learning. They are slowly building up their stores again. Basically if it isn’t healthy most of us do not want it. I am Diabetic so no sugar is important to me. Caffeine can stop my heart but our Barista’s can make me a large, decaffeinated, half strength Latte that tastes like full on coffee. I can trust them not to kill me.

I would never visit a Starbucks or Gloria Jeans. We are coffee snobs in Oz. We love the ambience of our coffee shops. They serve excellent coffee. They are meeting places of enjoyment. Every coffee shop is different, has its own vibe and are often furnished and decorated in interesting, arty ways. There are thousands of them everywhere , especially in Melbourne CBD. My favourite is the cafe at downstairs Dymocks Bookshop, the largest bookshop in Australia. For me it is a repose from book hunting and the bustle of the city.

I live in regional Australia, we dont usually get the franchises here in Far North Queensland. I am by no means a coffee snob but I do enjoy the culture around having my dose of caffine in the moring with a friend, usually to go because for me it's about whom you're sharing your time with. There are to many to count here {coffee shop s- cafes - trucks - } but there are even stores that allow you to select from a plethora of beans from around the world. I did go to a Starbucks, but it as what they described as sugar loaded, the m ain reason was to collect the mugs. So I believe it was the novelty around saying you've been to their store. The more I type the more I realize that Aussies default position is coffee snob, we're spoilt for choice and quality. Love you channel Kabir and chuffed you like reacting to Aussie stuff.

As an Aussie, hand on heart I can confirm that Starbucks does not provide a good coffee. If anything its product is poor tasting liquid confectionary. And here in Australia unashamedly, we are coffee snobs and are used to a good coffee - as coffee is meant to be consumed. Also, the video you are watching offers misleading info. At 5:50 the video you are commenting on says 'there are 35 million Australian consumers'. Impossible as there are only 26 million Australians and most children under 10 generally do not waltz into a cafe and order a coffee.

Her in Oz, especially Melbourne, we have really good coffee. Starbucks do not. That very simply is why it did not work. We had a lot of italian immigrants, they brought good coffee and espresso machines, we embraced it. So we hve an established range of really good coffee houses, and local coffee roasters. Doesn’t matter how long they took we will never embrace it.

The coffee culture in Oz you could describe as more old school european than american. Very discerning tough marketplace. There is absolutely no need for a large chain. There just aren't many left although it's still in Australia. A few shops in very busy shopping malls. In the 1950's and 60's millions of Italian migrated here and many opened coffee shops. By the time Starbucks arrived there was already a large established culture.

I (Australian) was a tea totaler (not a teetotaler LOL) until they sacked all the tea ladies at my place of work. They were replaced with an appalling instant beverage machine. The tea was undrinkable and the coffee just passable, but that eventually turned me into, firstly, and instant coffee drinker, and eventually an espresso coffee drinker. I still like a good cup of tea occasionally, but both tea or coffee has to be black with no sweetener. Starbucks coffee in Australia is awful.

No we don’t have chains just for coffee, Gloria Jeans is the only one I know, or if we do they aren’t great. Australians are discerning when it comes to coffee & we have variety available. What went wrong with Starbucks is that the coffee is horrible, I mean horrible. If you taste good barista coffee, made properly you will never drink that American pisswater again. They can go on & on about the economy, how their template was off but basically the coffee, price and presentation is really off. I never visit Gloria Jeans because the men who introduced it to Australia are directors of Hillsong Church. Something else that Starbucks doesn't do that Aussie cafes do is good food. Live in suburban Sydney and avoid Starbucks. Now retired, I meet a group of friends at a local coffee shop 5 mornings a week, and other friends a bitk further away the other days. I did try Starbucks at a nearby centre. The first time, I thought that perhaps the barista might have got things wrong, but a second visit a few days later showed that it was not the fault of the barista. That shop closed after a short time as we locals just avoided it. The coffee is not a style that Australian are accustomed to, and are not willing to make the effort. We'll stick with our traditional shops ad leave Starbucks to those visiting from the US.

I live in Brisbane, where Starbucks had a store in a prime location opposite Central Station. I walked past it every day, and it was always pretty much deserted. I had a coffee from there and it was cloyingly sweet. I don't think Starbucks even had a chance - there's several cafes on every block, and trained baristas at every one, making coffee based on the preferred espresso format. 30 years ago McDonald's saw an opportunity in this, and introduced McCafe, a separate section with a trained barista serving espresso style coffee that is really quite good, along with plenty of seating and the fare that's expected in a cafe. It was very successful, and the model has been copied in other countries.

In spite of the assertions of the video, Starbucks failed in Australia for 2 key reasons. First, Australians prefer quality instead of quantity. I never felt the urge to have Starbucks as I was a loyal Gloria Jeans customer 😊 Here in Melbourne we have great coffee... even in the suburbs. I live an hr south-east of Melbourne and there are great local coffee shops. If I have a big name coffee and I'm near an outlet...it is usually Gloria Jean's Coffee ☕️ ❤

We have Starbucks here on the Gold Coast. Mostly tourists go to it.

The Australians do not like weak brown water with lots of sugar and added chemicals. We drink proper, good coffee, not sugary drinks called coffee.

Businesses always take out loans when expanding. In the long run, it´s safer for the company. You never want to use your own money in a business.

I tried Starbucks once. It was so bad I had to throw it away. I don't know how they managed to make it taste watery, bitter and burnt all at the same time. They also used cheaper robusta beans rather than the more sophisticated arabica beans that are standard here in Australia.

A lot of people like Flat White and not much sugar. Then you can sit down with friends and have a chat. In country towns it is great to be able to sit down and watch the people ambling up the street.

Yea I’ve tried Starbucks. It just tastes like milk with sugar in it. I hated it. I’ll only order ice teas and food from there.

What's already been said: the Starbucks coffee is bad and you can get a better coffee almost anywhere you like. You can even get a decent coffee in most little country towns. At last count there are 8 very good coffee shops within 5 minutes from my place. Gloria Jean may have better coffee but I've never tried it. Why bother to go out of my way? And I'd agree with the comment below: "you can get better quality coffee at a Aussie petrol station then what they serve at Starbucks"

I went once and found the coffee too weak, too sweet, too expensive, not enough real coffee, and too American. I did try it again when I was in Japan, and it was a little better, but nowhere near enough to want me to go to Starbucks again.

I have tried Starbucks in Australia and in China. The Starbuck in Australia is awful. In China, it is undrinkable.

The worst cup of coffee in Australia is better than the best cup of coffee in the USA. Starbucks (in my opinion) is like a sweet, warm, coffee-flavoured milkshake. I avoid them like the plague - as do most discerning likers of coffee. When I was living in China, I used to go to Starbucks, partly because the Chinese had not embraced coffee culture at that time, but I only bought their hot chocolate. Why? Because I'd rather drink dish washing water than what Starbucks tries to pass off as coffee. My son and I each have our own coffee machine at home. We don't touch each others' coffee machine.

Gloria Jeans is supported by Hillsong. The people that own Gloria Jeans, go to Hillsong.Been to Gloria Jeans once, would not go back. Never saw a starbucks. We don't have the same tastes as USA or other nations. We also watch our sugar consumption. Although there are people in Australia like the sugary drinks and sweet things.....a lot of Australians don't. Italian Coffee, there is just no comparison. Its about quality. As with the only catering to tourists while ignoring the Australian market, I don't know any people group on this earth, that likes to be ignored in there own nation. So its like them saying, up yours to us. Maybe one day we will see Australian coffee, the ones that grow it here, supported, because they know what good quality coffee is, and they know the local market....in other words they know us and listen, when having coffee its about connection, family and friends.
