Yes, it’s something that was common in public school lunches in Kansas. Not really an area delicacy but a budgetary accommodation for schools to bribe kids to each cafeteria chili, they served it with cinnamon rolls. Also it’ more a cinnamon roll on the side situation - not on top but you do you! 😊 I’ve seen several travel vloggers talk about it so I’m curious how the word got out that it was super popular here since it’s certainly not a restaurant dish 🤔

I'm a lunchlady in the Kearney School District, in Kearney, Missouri. Not far from Kansas City. We do serve cinnamon rolls with chili for lunch. They are served up separately though, and the kids eat it how they want. My kitchen manager says she had it in Oklahoma also, where she grew up. Maybe it's a midwest thing! I grew up in central Kansas and for decades, whenever the school served chili for lunch, the dessert was always a cinnamon roll. It seemed to be a set pairing on the menu. And this combination became engrained for many students that grew into adults over the years and still wanted that pairing. To this day, when I finish a bowl of chili, a want a cinnamon roll to finish off the meal. I've heard of this pairing all across Kansas schools from other people, too. So, it seems to be a widespread Midwestern thing. And the cinnamon roll really does go well with the chili. It's just another bread item, instead of using crackers or cornbread to eat with the chili, you can use the cinnamon roll. It's almost as iconic as fried pickles. That's another midwestern staple.

Chili and cinnamon rolls is more of a Kansas thing than Kansas City, MO thing. Growing up, school lunches had cinnamon rolls on chili days, so it is a classic combo for us. But we ate them separately, not all together. At most, we’d dip a piece of cinnamon roll in the chili. Bierocks are also a central Kansas thing. The Mennonites and Amish brought them from Ukraine/Russia. Runzas in Nebraska are shaped differently but are the same thing. Just from a diffrent part of Eastern Europe. They made these for school lunches, too.

When I saw the bierocks, they reminded me of something similar I used to get when I was stationed in Hawaii back in the mid '80s. A couple of the malls had a place in the food court called Patty's Chinese Kitchen, both of which had a lot of bakery items in addition to the usual (addictive) Chinese food. They had this thing called a manapua that looked like a bierock but was filled with finely chopped pork in a sweet, red, almost bbq kind of sauce. 40 years later I still salivate just thinking about them. Patty, if you're reading this, please move to Oklahoma.

I just made a similar comment. I grew up in South Central Kansas. Chili and cinnamon roll day and bierock day were by far, the most popular days for school lunch. I even remember parents actually visiting the school cafeteria on chili day to eat lunch.

I'm from Wyoming. I grew up in the 70'S. We had chili and cinnamon rolls(homemade) for school lunch every Wednesday. Bierocks aka Cabbage burgers here in Wyoming...my mother's family(German/Russian decent) recipe is over 100yrs old.

Yes, it’s a Midwest old school thing the chili and cinnamon roll is a thing but normally I eat my chili first and then the cinnamon roll. I normally don’t combine them even though I have tried it mixed. The combination was more popular in the 50’s-70’s than nowadays

In Nebraska they’re called Runza’s. They have Runza Hut restaurants there. Traditionally it’s cabbage, ground beef and onions in a roll.

So funny! I was going to comment that my favorite ice cream is always the one in my mouth. :) Folks, I'm a 60 year old Kansan, I love chili and I love cinnamon rolls... I have eaten tons of both. I've NEVER heard of trying them together like that. I think I'm going to try it, but will put 4 cinnamon rolls in a cake pan, drown them with my homemade chili, top it all with shredded cheese, and bake it in the oven for 15-20 minutes. That should allow the chili to be absorbed into the rolls. I've put tuna in Jell-O before, just out of curiosity, so this ought to be a whole lot better. Terrific idea for a reaction, folks! Loved it!

In St. Louis, MO I owned a Donut Shop. Next door was a restaurant. Every day, people would come in and buy cinnamon rolls before going into the restaurant for chili. After a while, the restaurant had a standing order for a daily supply of cinnamon rolls to eat with their chili. So yes, it's definitely a thing.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, chili is always served with cinnamon rolls in schools. They aren't dumped together, but always served together. Runza restaurants have the beef/cabbage/bread sandwiches, and sell chili and cinnamon rolls in the winter. Runza is a Nebraska restaurant.

I grew up in Kansas and I have never put chilli on the cinnamon roll before. In school, it was common to have chilli and a cinnamon roll served together (on the same plate/tray). A classic combo for school lunch. The roll was the dessert and the chilli did have beans in it. It was so common that if I have chilli I always want a cinnamon roll for dessert. There is a chain restaurant for bierocks called "Runza" that started in Nebraska that is good as well. There are a couple here in Kansas. But the Wichita restaurant you went to is excellent. I would say that it is a version of Pastys or you have dumplings that are an Asian version. It just seems to be an early version of portable, cheap, good food for the daily laborer that you find in every culture.

The Woodyard is one of those single BBQ shacks I talked about in a comment on your earlier KCBBQ installment. It began as people just supplying the wood for the other local BBQ places. They did a little cooking on their own and soon folks wanted to buy their Q. So, they converted the house into a restaurant and set up tables outside. Eventually they took over the neighbor's house for more indoor dining. One of the best local places!

I worked at Woodyard years ago... You wouldn't say they are 1 of the best local places if you had ever seen how the food was prepared and stored. At least when I worked there. Yes If you got fresh food it was fine and good but if it wasn't fresh, you would sh!t yourself before you even got home. The owner is a tool and he couldn't care less about his employees or customers.

I grew up in a small town about 30 minutes southwest of KC. When I was in school, in the 90's, some days we would be served a nice bowl of chili and a cinnamon roll. I've never known chili to be served any other way, and I always need a cinnamon roll when I eat chili! It really is the best thing. If you're ever around a Runza stop in and try one! They're delicious! They're similar to the Bier rocks, but fuller and in more like a biscuit. I started making them at home with biscuits, hamburger with onion, saur kraut and cheese. Yum!!

Kansas native here, and yes they did actually serve cinnamon rolls with chili in our schools. I still love the combination to this day. I buy an order of cinnamon rolls from CiCis pizza every time I make homemade chili. I dip the rolls as I eat the chili.

Cinnamon roll and chili is an Iowa thing, not a Kansas thing, and you were in Missouri. That being said, it was a favorite school lunch of mine in southern Missouri. But they weren't mixed, but rather, as a complete meal it was chili, with cheese, and a cinnamon roll for dessert with chocolate milk. I know of one restaurant (food truck) here in Springfield MO that serves it.

Born and raised Kansan and yes Chili and Cinnamon Rolls are a common dish in school and at home growing up but I never poured chili on my cinnamon roll. I can tell you growing up on a cold day, I loved seeing that we were having chili and cinnamon rolls. Bierocks are also a very popular dish in Kansas as well as Nebraska due to many German immigrants settling in Kansas and Nebraska in the 1800's.

I am from the KC area and I've never heard of the cheese slipper. I love pork tenderloin, it's so delicious, and always served in such a huge size, no matter where you get it. When I was in school, we did always have cinnamon rolls served with our chili, although I never ate the chili on the cinnamon roll. The chili cinnamon roll thing is a Midwest thing, it's not just Kansas. My husband is from the Missouri side of KC, and he had never heard of chili with cinnamon rolls.

Easily find Cinnamon Roll and Chili in a few other Great Plains states too! Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa...I know those for sure! It is not every restaurant, but its not uncommon! The Bierock is just known to my American (German Heritage) Family as a cabbage/kraut pocket! Same ingredients, spices basically. The sweetness comes from the dough used to form the pocket! Just a different name cause we came to America 4 Generations ago! I also grew up eating a hell of a lot of them also! This Episode brings back memories, thanks! Welcome to the Great Plains!😁

The cheese slipper is an internet thing. Almost no one here has ever heard of this. I've only heard of it because another channel did this as well and they got one. The cinnamon roll and chili thing is absolutely a thing. It was a school lunch thing. It's odd but works.

Yes. We grew up with chili and cinnamon rolls as a school lunch in Iowa. Grew up in western Iowa in the Tri- city area where Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska all meet. I’m 55 but my children had this in school too. You either dip the roll in the chili or you took a bite of one then a bite of the other. We never dumped the chili over the roll. It’s a Midwest thing.

I am born and raised in Kansas City. We were served chili and cinnamon rolls in school, and my mom would also make it as a comfort food. You can eat it how you like, but most people rip and dip, rather than pour it on top.

I've lived in Kansas all my life, and this is something that I had never hear of till my family moved to Northwestern Kansas from Southeastern Kansas. Usually the school kitchen served them separately to allow students to either put it in their chili or just rip and dip.

I'm from KC Missouri and growing up my school would serve a cinnamon roll with chili or Cornbread. I've never actually tried it together though! lol but I will never eat chili without a Cinnamon roll or Cornbread. It's the perfect combo of sweet and savory. :) Love your videos!!

Chili and cinnamon rolls are awesome! Often used as a fund raiser event for high school sports boosters! The chili is eaten first and then the cinnamon roll. Spicy followed by sweet. Kansan girl for over 64 years. Bierocks or runza’s are also Awesome!

I am 66 and it was a regular feature "way back then" on school lunch menus in my kansas hometown. The chili, of course, did not go on top of the roll. It was served along side it. Maybe also with carrot and celery sticks. It was good and is a fond memory of those days.

In the60s-70s the other school lunch fave was pizza, with chocolate cake, and corn. The cinnamon rolls and chili was wonderful too. Kansas native here

When I was in grade school, back in the 60's, we had chili and cinnamon rolls every Thursday during the school years. It was wonderful. We never poured our chili over the roll though...that's a new one on me. LOL

It's a local delicacy in south central kansas. We can all thank whoever the menu creator was for all USDs in kansas in the 80s for bringing us this combination in school. The best you can get is from Carriage Crossing in Yoder Kansas. While you are there try the roast beef.

I make Bierocks about once a month, they are so good and keep well in the fridge for a few days, just warm in the microwave. You can also make them in advance, freeze before the second rise then later when you'd like to make then for dinner, just place frozen rolls on greased baking sheet, cover with cling wrap and let thaw and rise til doubled and bake.

The best thing to eat with chili is a peanut butter sandwich. Just white bread and peanut butter, nothing else. Dip it in and enjoy. Its fantastic.

When I was in school we would get a bowl of chili and a cinnamon roll separate, carrots and celery, crackers and usually pears or peaches. We never dumped the chili on the cinnamon rolls but eating them in tandem back-and-forth is quite good. That’s middle to late 80s.

Yes, chili and cinnamon rolls is a thing and I love it! I grew up in rural Nebraska, went to Norris school district, this was served once or twice a month. Our lunch ladies made some of the best cinnamon rolls around! But the chili and cinnamon rolls were separate. To be fair, I've never seen this at a restaurant served as a dish together.

Also, a "Runza" is a derivative to the Bierock, "Runza" is a fast food restaurant in Nebraska, and also the name of the sandwich. Which is a ground beef and cabbage filled bread, with the addition of onions. It originates from German-Russian immigrants coming to the United States!

Grew up eating chili with cinnamon rolls in Nebraska, and still eat it that way. We always dipped the roll into the chili instead of pouring it over. If you ever get to Nebraska, a fast food restaurant to check out that sells chili and cinnamon rolls, is Runza. Runza also sells Runza sandwiches made with cabbage that you should check out to.

I have lived my entire life in south central Kansas. Everyone I love lives here, I love it here, it's home. We definitely eat chili and cinnamon rolls. I don't put mine on the cinnamon roll, just eat them separately but together (if that makes sense 😂) and let them compliment each other. We had chili and cinnamon rolls at school almost once a month growing up. I think it's more of an at home or school food rather than a marketable restaurant food, that may be why you had difficulty finding them together.

Catherine the Great was a German princess who was married to Czar Peter of Russia. Germans where resettled to Russia to create villages near the palaces so Catherine wouldn't be so home sick. Many of them moved to the U.S. after Catherine's death and settled in the Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska area. The Bierock (a.k.a. Krautburger or Runza) is a recipe developed by these Germans. So it is a German recipe but not from Germany.

Growing up in Kansas, in school every time we were served chili they served us cinnamon rolls as the dessert option. Most people I know didn’t actually eat it together, although some did and still do. Most of us would eat the chili as the main dish and the cinnamon roll after for dessert. It’s the perfect 1-2 punch.

Cinnamon Rolls and Chili is a Midwest thing. I grew up on it in Nebraska. Yes in school. It the Fall/Winter season the fast food restaurant Runza has it on the menu. The Bierock is also similar to a Runza which the restaurant is named after.

Ok, so I'm a 38yo chef from KS, born and raised, and I can for sure GUARANTEE you, this is a real thing! The only reason most don't know or hear about it anymore, is because how old the tradition is. It's been slowly covered up by modern food service, but ask anyone who went to school during the 90s, it was one of the best lunches, (or breakfasts, depending on what part of the state you were from.) to look forward to during the week. This was about the time they started free breakfast and lunches for poor kids like me, and it was very cost effective, and also delicious. I loved it! I can make it from scratch to this day! There's also a certain method you're supposed to use to eat it properly that has also faded in time, but I digress. It's definitely a thing.
