Only difference at the moment is that Tories have been proven incompetent this time round and labour are presently untested. But speaking as a northerner who grew up in the 80s... I'm certainly not inclined to ever give Tories any benefit of the doubt, no. But warsi doesn't need benefit of the doubt cos she's always been fairly clear of thought and on the side of compassion - even when I disagree with her economic views. I equate the current Tory government with much evil. That's not the same as all Tories. And it definitely doesn't make me pro labour. As an Israeli, I want to commend Sayeeda for her insightful understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is often rare among foreign politicians. While I also support the two-state solution, I'd like to highlight a specific obstacle not covered in her talk. To simplify the matter, there are two primary concerns in Israel regarding this issue, each potentially pointing to a different solution. The first, which supports a two-state solution, as Sayeeda explained, is the fear that annexing the West Bank and reoccupying Gaza could jeopardize Israel's status as a Jewish state. The second concern, leaning toward a one-state solution, relates to the potential of a weak palestinian state becoming a terror state in the West Bank, akin to the one in Gaza. This fear is rooted in the 2006 experience in Gaza when Hamas won elections, used its power to undermine democracy in the Gaza Strip and started posing a direct threat to Israel. To understand the gravity of this concern, consider the scenario where a situation like the one in Gaza unfolds from the West Bank, if in the not so populated south Hamas massacred 1,400 and took more than 200 civilians hostage, what might happen if terrorists would breach the borders near major cities like Tel Aviv, Kfar Saba, Herzeliya, and others which are much more densely populated. This issue represents a significant fear among Israelis regarding the conflict. If not for this fear, many on the right in Israel would probably support a two-state solution. While I'm not a historian, feel free to ask me about the conflict or the situation that happens now in Israel, I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.

Ultimately, the Palestinians are being occupied by the Israelis who seem hell bent on expanding settlements and deleting Palestine. The Israeli people who I'm told are some of the smartest in the world, should have surely anticipated that an oppressed population will keep resisting? I cannot stress the importance of common sense: Stop occupying Palestine.
@narmi218 Жыл бұрын
And how has Israel’s policies provided security for its citizens? Commit to peace and you shall have security but instead, your nation has chosen expansion and the continued dispossession and expulsion of Palestinians. Denying them the same rights you enjoy due to ethnicity. A legal system that discriminates them. 2006 Hamas elections - what a fairy tale you have woven there. Your country along with the US tried to engineer a coup for the PA to oust Hamas and Hamas foiled that attempt. Your nation repeats the slogan that there is no partner for peace while it continues to expand settlements. Your nation has no interest in a 2 state solution.
@paulheydarian1281 Жыл бұрын
As it has been previously stated many times regarding Israel. You can either have a Jevvish state or a democratic state, but you cannot have both. This is why calling Israel the only Democracy in the Middle East, is like calling George W. Bush, a Compassionate Conservative.

@@narmi218 Hi, sorry it took so long to answer, I agree with you that in the last couple of years we had shit governments (mostly) but you cant deny that we really tried to strive for peace, you have 3 pretty recent examples with the giving of the Gaza strip, Ehud Barak's offer and Ehud Olmert's offer. So I think that saying that we dont have peace because we didnt try is just objectively wrong.
@narmi218 Жыл бұрын
@@mangonamnam6855 you say couple of years but then refer back to recent so called peace attempts which actually go back to 2008, 15 years ago. And that striving for peace as you call it such as unilaterally leaving Gaza in 2006 but still controlling it externally by land air and sea. Olmert’s 2008 unilateral plan to annex most of the settlements in the West Bank. Ehud baraks peace plan where shlomo ben Ami the foreign mister at the time admitted himself that had he been Palestinian, he too would have rejected it. While all at the same time, the approval and expansion of further settlements continued. This is not striving for peace but subjecting the Palestinians to accepting scraps. Talk about peace while gobbling up all the pizza slices and throwing the scraps to the Palestinians. What did the PA in the West Bank get in return for denouncing violence, giving up armed resistance and recognizing the state of Israel. Did they get peace in the West Bank or are you going to blame that on Hamas too?

And I've always thought so, even a decade ago when she was in Smarmy Cameron's government. She is simply a credible character. And I say this without agreeing with her on policy issues much at all. Ibn sina - al farabi- al Ghazali- Ahmad Al-Beyrûnî whose contribution to science and religion is equal to great scholars of history One minor note. Minute 42:40 Rory expressed deep appreciation for Sayeeda being ‘incredibly well informed position’ regarding peace talks. Yet, her claim 36:23 ‘hasn’t been a series peace deal on the table since then.’ Perhaps you could address added depth to this point. In 2000, according to Nathan Thrall, Palestinians were offered 91% of West Bank and around 86% in practise with East Jerusalem’s most non Jewish populated areas which Arafat rejected. A minor but significant point. In 2007/2008, ehud Olmert reportedly met Abbas 36 times (hardly representative of no peace talk). In 2007, Olmert sat with the Arab League for more discussions. That failure helped lead to the plot between Fatah and Hamas. Sorry for the length but Rory is an erudite scholar and his point was politely generous.

I found Rory's question regarding collective empathy quite interesting. I think most of us, including myself, would like to believe that we live in a world that is able to collectivly condemn and collectively empathise regardless of how it potentially conflicts with our own notions of identity or political opinions. As Sayeeda said, "us and them". In the last couple of years I've lost all hope of that. It's not just Braverman's politicisation of the police force which is undoubtedly undermining the need to restore faith and trust in the force. It's the way you can't have a conversation now without being accused of harbouring a dividing motive.

She's such a role model, deep down I admire this women. I have seen her twice now in person.....i didnt bother her at all the first time but most recently in a Atif Aslam concert in London and even as a nearly-40 year old, bold, bulky, Alpha, I felt jittery and captured by Gravitas.....this is someone immune to being starstruck ...I don't get phased at all.All I could say was, I am a huge fan of your work and she politely nodded in acknowledgement with a smile. She commands the room without a word being spoken, intelligence resonates from her body language......btw Sadiq Khan was there sat literally 2 seat ahead of us, zero charm, no personna or presence...total plonka.

There are many great things that these podcasts achieve, one is to open the door on the thinking people that are in all the key parties. We may disagree but it helps a lot to understand the other. Tribal politics is deadly for the nation. That is statement literally the situation.

Very informative interview, and it's always refreshing to hear civilised conversation. Sad to hear about Douglas Murray's views on Baroness Warsi. I normally like what he has to say.

34:15 Douglas Murray as in the Spectator guy?

Yes I also wonder; if this is the same guy now being watched as some sane valid voice of reason, we need to hear what he really stands for. Staggering if he could actually come out with such bigoted claptrap in a govt anti terror meeting. Also, why was he in the meeting in the first place as a non elected person? If we wanted him running the country, we'd vote for him.

Very interesting interview with a woman I’ve always greatly respected for standing up for women’s and minorities rights. It’s always puzzled me that she has supported Conservatism. because it seems so very alien to so many of her principles. As for Conservatives wanting the ‘low state involvement’ and low taxation, it’s always ‘fine’ with them until they realise that the services formerly provided by the state and moved to the private sector are no longer so well provided for and/or, it actually costs more for the private sector to provide because the profit maximisation objectives of private companies. E.g. prisons, social care, privatised railways etc. always comes first.

We need so many more Sayeeda Warsi's in our politics. It's wonderfully refreshing, and painfully rare, to hear amazing insight alongside thoughtful balanced views based on solid evidence. On a daily basis, I find it so depressing to hear much of the UK's political rhetoric which is quite the opposite, and this podcast has left me energised and in some way a little more hopeful. Many thanks to Sayeeda, Rory and Alastair.

Great interview. Any chance you could get someone on to talk about the Abraham Accords?

Being a black man in Britain (that doesnt vote Conservative btw) i totally get what she means about labour (and the left in general) when it comes to dealing with race... it feels unauthentic.. like theyd prefer to speak for you instead of you speaking for yourself...
