Lawyer, businesswoman, campaigner and the first female Muslim UK cabinet minister. Baroness Warsi has broken glass ceilings throughout her career and tirelessly campaigned against Islamophobia within both society and the Conservative party. She joins James to discuss why she believes she's in a toxic relationship with the Conservative party and which cabinet minister is to blame for taking the party away from its conservative values and turning it towards the far-right.
Sayeeda hosts a brand-new podcast with comedian, David Baddiel. A Muslim & A Jew Go There. It's available to listen on all podcast platforms: linktr.ee/amuslimandajewgothere

@flossiehoward - same as Anna Soubrey, she was a tory but also principled, sensible and compassionate. I can't understand (or stomach) the minority members of the tory party who _don't_ call it out for what it is. Patel and Braverman are two examples of the worst offenders but there are many, many more who actually seem to relish the social, racial and religious division that their party promotes.

@@wavydavy9816 Patel and Braverman were the subject of my point. They exemplify the Hindu right who have a long history (going back centuries in India) of aligning themselves with whomever is in power. Survivalists. Add to that their close ties with both Israel and India’s RSS, both of whom are fascistic, anti-Islamic regimes. It therefore seems likely (particularly with Braverman’s rhetoric), that they are leveraging the abundant Islamophobia in the ether for their own political gain. Similarly, their unconditional support for Israel (even without mandate in the case of Patel), is the other dimension of the above point - pandering for personal gain.

I really enjoyed this interview. So much of the comments Sayeeda makes resonated with me, a third generation Moslem born in the UK (now 60), with 3 kids (all uni grads) and grandkids born here. I am exceptionally grateful to my amazing country who allowed my family to flourish, all 4 of my siblings going to university from state schools and becoming successful medical professionals, mainly due to the hard work and sacrifice of our parents. But despite success, both in business and work, and always having natural and instinctive conservative family values, we could never bring ourselves to vote Conservative for many of the reasons highlighted by Sayeeda. I now fear for my children & grandchildren being brought up in a gaslit Islamophobic environment that we seem destined to be lurching towards. I sincerely hope I’ve got this wrong.

Being a Tory isn't a bad thing. Personally, I don't brand myself Labour, because I do personally want to be independent and work hard, see a thriving and prosperous community. I'm not saying that Labour votes are my opposite! But what the current Tory represents is everything but what I have mentioned. Sad thing is - not sure if Labour has some values as well. Currently, the party seems to be muted, dormant, not knowing what they want to be/

I once met her at a book signing in Bradford, she was such an impressive Speaker. I was so impressed by her. She really is charming. But I couldn’t then, and don’t understand why she was a Conservative, especially with Johnson being P.M when he was then. The argument was about her values, and better within than outside. But s now she is actively stating that this isn’t really the Tory Party anymore. How can she align herself to the present Tory Party. Sometimes we need to have a rethink.

Great interview & brilliant that Warsi has the courage and freedom to share her insight in this way. We’re quite mature now in seeing thru the political & media agenda & know this Govt has been looking for a hook - & working towards creating one - for some time. If it came on the back of a terrorist incident they may well have succeeded. The fact that they’re loading this at a time when thousands of innocent civilians, predominantly Muslim, are being killed & starved in Gaza, is deeply disturbing & offensive. It’s heartless, obvious, against all our values and will backfire on them. To then try and close down protests or vilify people who march for them & call for ceasefire & peaceful resolution is unforgivable. It won’t be forgotten here or around the world and is affecting our reputation. Cameron seems on right track at least, Sunak has no idea whatsoever on foreign affairs or ofc domestic or the most basics in politics.

Baroness Warsi has always been a Conservative I’ve admired because she has always been sincere in her values. You don’t have to agree, to appreciate the person. However you can see there is scope for negotiation, not a closed door of extremist views. Labour do nothing to encourage these representatives with values, they too are closed to negotiation. Look at the top down heavy control in that Party. We need representatives with core values who represent their electorate. It’s time for some form of Proportional Representation to break the 2 party, establishment protecting, unethical foreign policy inertia.

I wondered how she could be a Tory these days, but having pushed feminism in the Punjab, working in the present party must be child's play. I really hope she remains a warrior and wins. What an antidote to Islamophobia! Abandon words like Zionist and Islamist, thank you for that very useful clarification. 0.5 arrests for every 10,000 peace marchers! Fantastic.
