Hmm. I find it hypocritical. Most couples expect a man to know what he is doing on a wedding night. Why can not the same be true for the woman he is marrying. If she lost her virginity, and the man truly loves her, why not just accept her as she is. If the woman is a virgin on her wedding night, it is OK. If she is not a virgin, it is also OK. One is not better than the other. We are all different, and women have different personality types, so why expect the same behavior from all. Some women can choose and act on their choice to preserve their virginity, others can not. Also, practicing virginity is a religious thing. Overstressing and overfocusing on it is unhealthy. I think the best thing is to accept things as they are. If virginity is lost it is pointless to stitch it up. It would cause the woman unnecessary mental torment, that they are deceiving themselves and their partner about it. If the virginity factor is very important to the male, and they would not be able to get over it should the lie come to light, this could destroy a potentially successful marriage. So I believe, everybody should just be honest with themselves, with their partner and just accept things as they are. Reflecting upon my own life, I have come to realize that preserving virginity is not important to find a suitable partner, what is important is to find a partner who accepts you as you are.

As one woman mentioned (sorry, I can not recall her name), it seems far more invasive and shameful, as well as less honorable, to have a doctor- especially a male doctor- looking at her and poking fingers in or doing surgery! Perhaps a grassroots effort is needed to educate in this area-maybe starting with the Imam, and/or the mothers. I understand it is rooted in cultural aspects, which are difficult to change, but by knowing the biological facts, things might slowly change. For example, "virginity" can not really be proven or not, not all virgins bleed the first time, and many that do bleed do so due to dryness and not being in an aroused state. Ok, that last one might be too much for now.

It needs to be made illegal in the UK and that’s it, an outright ban to protect potential victims and also make it harder to organise arranged marriage to very young girls. There are female gynecologists if someone is not comfortable with a male doctor, but I've been to male doctors too, and they have always been very professional. Not in the UK where you see a GP for everything from thyroid issues to heart problems, to uterine fibroids. But there are countries where access to specialist consultations and treatment is a bit easier, and women take advantage of it. Not because their mother in law tells them to do that, but for their own health, and that's not archaic, that's called proper access to healthcare.

Unfortunately, the authors of the article do not give the slightest indication of how many young women suffer from these practices. Nor do they say how large the proportion of the Muslim community is that is exposed to such family structures. This gives me the impression that the film is not very helpful in increasing young women’s self-determination, but rather stirs up anti-Muslim prejudices. I've read articles that have revealed that you always have a hymen and that there is no way (short of an injury) to tell if someone is a virgin or not. Also, i personally did not bleed until the second time and multiple times afterwards. So its possible for a virgin to not bleed, and a non-virgin to bleed.
