When I worked at a main dealer in Surrey, England there was and maybe still is a 48 page A4 book on how to fix water leaks in defenders, every day there was vehicles outside with water being sprayed onto them, this rarely worked in my opinion, as it's hard to recreate leaks by simulation like that due to varying angles, wind etc. Anyway I came to the conclusion that higher customer expectation of the vehicles due to the new breed of Landrover ownership was causing a lot of disappointment, fuelled by the salesmen promising to fix the leaks, which is ultimalety impossible. Mike's got it right, they are great in hot dry places like Africa, ironic really being built in rainy old blighty. The other thing I noticed at the dealer was that because they were increasingly being stuffed with stupid carpets and thicker and thicker mats, they used to store up all this water and stink, rather than just dump it out the bottom where rain needs to go to water the flowers etc. Just my thoughts, we love these old heaps so much, we put up I guess. Thanks Mike for teaching a thirty year Landrover Mechanic lots of new ideas, it's all about learning everyday from each other

For the roof seam, I have successfully used some transparent Sikaflex. It does a much nicer job than the silicone and remains flexible. Also for the gutters, the roof racks damage the sealant inside the gutter and the water can then ingress in the inside part of the gutter. Re-sealing these is a good idea if they show cracks
@BritannicaRestorations7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Sikaflex is hard to find here, and i have a hard time importing 'dangerous good' that contain solvents They have to come by sea. I know what you mean about the roof racks - I hate them, but here they are part of the 'image' When I was in Australia no one used roof racks - too top heavy - they all used trailers. You could unhitch and the go out for a wander in the bush without lugging everything about with you Mike

Hi Mike, i am restoring my defender pickup and I wondering what’s the best way to seal roof with? I replaced all the sealants but I am worried about the front side above the windscreen? Thank you 🙏
@BritannicaRestorations10 күн бұрын
Use body caulk in a tube - don't use silicone! Body caulk cleans easy with white spirit and is flexible. Usually comes in white, black and grey

Thanks for the info Mike. My 92 110 is leaking from the alpine Windows but drips into the car at the front just as you say. Oh well, another job to add to the list. Regards from the Midlands, UK.

Hi! I was asked to do a video on the alpine windows and how to seal them up, but I don't have a vehicle that needs them right now - if they don't leak - don't touch! I would say that if you are going to do this job, buy another rubber seal as a spare - they are so easy to rip when you fit them. They don't seem to be made of very strong rubber, but at the same time they need to bend round the ends of the glass. It is advised to get some tools to fit the glass - a screwdriver is not good enough! Mike

We're fortunate to have a leak free Defender (MY2015), can you believe it? But I watch your videos anyway. Apprechiate you're doing them and I know sooner or later I'll need them :-)

@@BritannicaRestorations So, 3 years later the foam seal between window frame and bulkhead let a bit of water in at the left hand corner :-) I've now sealed it with Sika Lastomer (butyl / dumdum with solvent). Interestingly there was a generous strip of sealant underneath the door seal around where that gap is. The gap itself was closed with a sticker (alu tape?).

I will have to check my alpines-I have had drips I cannot understand after replacing the door and door window seals! I had the crack in the latch panel and reinforced mine with 6mm aluminium plate - I tried finding a replacement part but was impossible to source - like your comment I reinforced a larger area.
@BritannicaRestorations6 жыл бұрын
Because a lot of people think that the door seals are the culprit, they tend to adjust the latches so the seal is nipped up - this leads to the door pillar cracking. Check the alpines as I would put money on they are the culprit OR the roof seam - the overlap has very little sealer in there and over the years water can get in showing the same problem of dripping in the vehicle Mike
@deanh37416 жыл бұрын
Britannica Restorations as it’s 28 years old I reckon most of the roof sealer has run off and the alpines rubber looks a tad perished. Saw another video by an Aussie that suggests applying a marine sealant (silkaseal I think) along the gutter where it turns up to the roof and all roof seams. Enjoying all your top tips. The cracks were sadly on the latch panel before I took possession

Hi Mike. its a td4 2.2L. 110 Station Wagon built in 2012. at the Rear doors i think i could locate the drop-in point close to the doors (could it br caused by the recently applied grease). at the Front i could not locate whether the water gets through the doors/Window or the bulkhead. however the front insulating mat is like a sponge filled with water..

Your video's are very useful!!! We recently had very heavy rain, and there was literally a puddle on my drivers seat and water over the handbrake, dashboard...just everywhere. It looked as if someone had just thrown a bucket of water in there. Going through your vids to see what I can figure out. I've been using SUGRU, will this damage the car (as it is a type of moldable silicon).
@BritannicaRestorations6 жыл бұрын
Not heard f SUGRU, but it sounds like you have a sunroof that needs removing as re sealing

Hi Mike! Thanks for all information and smiles that you are spreading. Have a problem with a leaking slide window on my Defender 90 -02 on right side. Put DumDum in some areas but keep getting like a flushing through some kind of draining hole on the inside? Leaking behind the front passenger seat and the seat in the back.Is this something that is possible to fix with just dum dum or is this a more major problem with the seelings do you think? Best and a lot of thanks / David, Sweden

Hi I get leaks on all four carpets (front and back seats carpets) of my 130. I suspect the leak is coming from the outer window seals into the doors and unto the carpets. But I am not sure. Any thoughts on where the leaks could be from?

Late comment, but have you ever seen a Defender where someone has successfully fitted a rain channel along the outer edge of the windscreen frame to reduce the water run off from the roof gutter to the door? If it was paint matched it certainly wouldn't look that out of place & would definitely help against that knee/foot shower you get when opening the door.
@BritannicaRestorations6 жыл бұрын
It is actually on my experimental list for this winter! Mike

Water from inside the dash is from the vent seals or seal between the windscreen and bulkhead Water on top of the pedals is from the top of the wing and poring the wrong way See my recent videos, but it is an issue that is fixable! Mike

Interesting video but I must say I've never had a leak in my three Nissan Patrols nor has my brother's 40 series Landcruiser. There must be a little masochism in Landrover ownership. ;)
