Vaseline is used to prime oil pumps for a couple of reasons... Oil can be used but as you say, it can and does drain away. There are also practical issues... Imagine trying to push oil into an old rover v8 oil pump and then pushing the gears into place before fitting the steel pump half! Impossible. Use Vaseline so it stays in the correct places. Vaseline is a lubricant and anti corrosive because it is petroleum jelly. And very important... the low melting temperature means it turns to liquid very easily and is washed away and diluted and easily evaporates once warmed in the engine oil. DO NOT USE GREASE... Grease has a much higher melting point and can easily block oil passages and refuses to melt until very hot. Death for a Rover v8 rocker gear!

When I rebuilt the 300Tdi head, the workshop manual mentioned that the free length of the valve springs should be 46.28mm, but the ones I removed and the new ones I had bought were both longer than that. It had no sense, that figure of 46.28 millimeters. I think they mucked up a lot of measurements on that manual...

Hi Mike, Regarding the spring length it is probably the length including the plunger, on the other hand the length you measured on the spring sounds too low as a new spring should be around 55 mm. It would be interesting to see what pressure the spring holds, it is supposed to relieve at 50 psi if I recall correctly.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
I was going off the book but 50 Psi is not a high pressure so a few mm off the spring will not have that much effect

Mike, I will need to do a power steering pump replacement for my 300tdi defender soon. I've never done it and can't find a useful KZbin video for it. Mike did a rebuild of a 3 bolt Defender steering box some while ago. If you are a bit more than handy as a mechanic, that video should be helpful you as it shows some of the downfalls to avoid, such as how to get the input screw out to replace the inner seals. HOW!!! do I know this. Because I did my box as I ran Mike's video on my laptop on the workbench as I did it. Good luck with your rebuild. Yorkshire Rob.

Thank you Robert, I've seen that video, I'm after something for the steering pump though. Mike did a video of a steering pump where the rear bearings failed, but didn't show how he took it out or back in. I have been very lucky in learning how to pull things apart as I owned a scrap yard and did it to recover the different metals from an early age, it was putting them back together that I found hard. Its a pity that you haven't got a scrap pump around so you can have a go at it without having to rebuild it again. I,m sorry that I misread your question, it must be an senior age thing. Don't be frightened of having a go, just be carefull, if I can do it, I,m sure you can. Once again good luck. Yorkshire Rob.

yes - I use Hylosil never has an issue - make sure both faces are flat I had a customer once who had issues with the fan belt getting eaten - turned out he machined 20 thou off the rear of the water pump casting to make it flat - this also stepped back the water pump and PS pump!

Hi Mike, Any chance you can cover the screaming 300tdi viscous fan bearing and what we can do to replace it? I've been told it is pressed into the timing case and people have changed them with bearings from Ford water pumps. Can you offer any advice on this? All the best, Matt.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Matt - I have heard the bearing is available - here it is a water pump bearing you need to cut it down - you must be super careful to get the distance from the face of the cover to the pulley correct or the belt will chew up!

You can get away with a bit of play as it is only a pulley - just be super careful dismantling the pulley flange - it is cast and breaks real easy and is not sold individually!

Thanks, great video! Did you ever experienced scenario of long (c.a. 10 seconds) no oil pressure after prolonged stay i.e. 2 weeks? Pressures are relatively ok (1.5Bar at idle when hot and 2.5 at idle when cold and higher when you rev up , spring is 45mm) and next day or few days startup pressure is ok. however after prolonged stay it takes long time to build pressure up.

Sounds like oil is draining back - could be the relief valve not seating properly?
@unclesam44
@unclesam44 2 жыл бұрын
Initially I've thought it could be suction pipe mesh clogged or o-ring failed and sucking air in the beginning. But after dropping sump mesh it looks very clean. Relief valve seemed to seat properly but is hard to diagnose as when you unscrew it fall down. Doesn't show any serious wear signs either, but will double-check tomorrow. For now plan to fit new spring and suction pipe o-ring in next two days and put all back together. Then run the engine and leave it off for two weeks. Will keep posting on this.

The metric measurements that you gave for the clearance of the rotor are incorrect by a decimal point you quoted from the paperwork 0.025mm - 0.075mm (0.010" - 0.030"). Remove a zero to give 0.25mm - 0.75mm which is equivalent (without splitting hairs) the same as 0.010" - 0.030". Obviously a typo error and wasn't very well proof read. PS I haven't finish watching the video incase you corrected it later on.
