Another easy fix for difficult to select Lo range is check the clevis pin on the shift lever, if the plastic washers and clip aren't installed properly the clevis pin can wander across and foul the gearbox casting as you try and select Lo. Did this very job on my Defender yesterday.

An old post I know but heres my penny's worth... I've changed the 'O' rings on these from time to time and sometimes found that the grub screw has been tightened so tight ( from the factory) that the the shaft has deformed slightly and if you try to force the shaft out you can damage the bore where the seal rests, so remove the grub screw slide the selector along the shaft out of the way and file the burrs down (it's a bit cramped in there but just perservere with it) and the shaft will come out easily and avoid damage to the aluminium bore...

I think I put too much on! Lol! Problem with these new types of sealer is they dry so quick in the tube make a nice seal but when you come to use the tube again it is solid

@@BritannicaRestorations You and I both understand the importance of tolerances, we also both know that most things coming out of China have poor quality. Put the two together, the tubes that the sealer come in probable don't seal properly once opened. Try a bit of PTFE tape around the thread before replacing the cap. This is just a thought.

Turns out it was this pesky little grub screw that was causing my issue, it wasn't even finger tight and I think if I drove the truck again it would've vibrated out and gone through the transfer box. Cheers again. While I've got this off do you reckon it's a good place to fill the box from if I'm changing the oil? Seems easier than the fill plug.

Mike, I’ve just put my LT230 back in after replacing seals and gaskets etc. What I noticed is that with a 10mm spanner I could move the difflock mechanism quite easily. However, when I fit the “arm” back on to the bar from the LT77 gearbox. It won’t budge out of difflock. And here’s the kicker, I’ve had my 110 2.5 na for five years and seemingly been driving with difflock engaged all the time!! Would it do damage? I’ve put it back to Normal now with the 10mm spanner.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think you would be in diff lock for 5 years as you would be buying tyres every month or fitting an centre diff weekly! The diff-lock is funny as you can turn it with a spanner to what seems like 3 positions, but only in and out works - fully to the right ( the little lever on the top of the diff lock) is locked - straight ahead is out You may have to tinker with the adjustment on the eye rod screwed into the gearbox casting
@CHAGrady
@CHAGrady 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, I’m not sure what’s going on then. The difflock light hasn’t worked in five years but now it does when I use the 10mm spanner to move the mechanism. High and low are fine. Weird

I've got a problem where if I select low range to get a heavy trailer into my drive. When I've unloaded and reverse back out, if I take the way from the house downhill, it drops into neutral and I loose drive. If I go the other way on the flat, it's fine. I'm suspecting its not quite fully engaging into high range and when on overrun on the downhill section the gears force themselves out of mesh? Or am I looking at something more serious?

@@BritannicaRestorations Cheers, I've had the centre console out enough times now so I think I'm sure what's involved. On another subject but with the main box, what would you say to the plastic bushing on the sector yoke falling apart after a thousand miles? I was lucky in that the bits fell into a location where I could retrieve them. I wondering if the one I fitted wasn't genuine? I've fitted new land rover parts but I'm concerned incase it happens again. I was lucky this time in that I was only outside the house when it happened. I could only select 5th, i put it into low as well and it got me back to the house to do the repair. Bloody land rovers!

I can only lock it in high. There is no binding from a visual inspection. Is it possible when it was sealed that it was installed incorrectly?

Mike, I have a 2003 Discovery 2 SE7 (North American Model). It does not have a center diff-lock on the gearbox lever. I have read some Discos nevertheless came with proper internals, is this true? Is there a way to identify this without R/R and disassembly of the gearbox? I there a way to modify the original linkage for this purpose, or is one kit required to purchase, for example from lucky8.com (www.lucky8llc.com/products/ashcroft-discovery-ii-cdl-kit) I love your videos, and passion for teaching us how to properly repair these Land Rovers! The 1999 and maybe 2000 had the transfer box with the diff lock fitted and also the last of the D2's had the diff lock fitted It is very strange but when I converted my V8's to 300Tdi and 5 speed, I linked up the diff lock and lever Never used it on 3 vehicles as the traction control worked perfectly (VERY ODD!) The Ashcroft kit is actually a Britpart kit DA1178 Note from the BP website - Early Discovery 2's were not supplied with a centre diff lock function for the LT230 transfer case although the vehicles still have the centre diff lock installed in the transfer case. To get the diff lock function to work it just needs connecting. The linkage is easy to fit, cable operated and very neat. You attach the existing high/low stud to this new lever assembly. This kit will only work on transfer cases with serial numbers starting with either 41D or 42D. Thanks for the support! Mike
