Anyone trying this in 2020, please make sure its the version 10 of the partition tool as the current version (12) does not allow os migration in the free version. Good luck all and thanks for the tutorial.

I had to replace a dead fan in my HP laptop, so used the opportunity to install a 1TB SSD, upgrade to a faster processor, install more RAM, and add bluetooth. Used Acronis True Image instead of his MiniTool Partition Wizard. Everything went smoothly, mainly because I was very careful in selecting the correct processor and bluetooth board. RAM did nothing, so went back to original 8g.

One difference I ran into was that my SSD was new from the manufacturer and came un-formatted. The PC wouldn't even recognize that there was a device attached via USB which gave me pause. I proceeded with the the manufacturer-provided disc-cloning software (rather than the one mentioned in this video) and it recognized the new SSD and formatted it before proceeding. Everything went smoothly from there. These directions are very helpful for those not quite sure of the process. My laptop is now unbelievably faster. Anyone struggling with a slow PC should really consider this upgrade.

BOOTING UP TO LOGIN SCREEN NOW TAKES 20 SECONDS, INSTEAD OF 2 MINUTES Word 365 loads in 6 seconds, instead of 30 seconds. And so on - I followed these instructions and switched to a Crucial MX500 1TB, and it has significantly improved performance on my Lenovo z50. I am literally writing this during what used to be my "bootup and go have coffee for 10 minutes" period. Thanks for a very useful video. I have one more useful IT Tip to add: 1) If you use Partition Wizard to copy to SSD, all of your previously hidden partitions will be assigned a Drive letter. Eg. WINRE_DRV should be hidden, but it ended up visible in My Computer. This is easily fixed by again running Partition Wizard, and changing the Drive Letter on those partitions to "none".

@@pranavnambiar1699 Hi Pranav. After transferring all of Hard Disk 0 to the new SSD, everything got transferred, including Drive C: (WIN10), Drive D: (my Data partition), and several smaller system partitions, such as WIN_RE. If you are having problems with Partition Wizard, you can try EaseUS ToDo Backup free version. I have several paid versions of this, which I use regularly for image backups: - install it on Windows 10 - use it to save your entire hard drive to image (eg. onto USB hard drive) - create an Easeus bootable Emergency Disk (very simple, its one of the menu options) - remove Hard Disk and put in the new SSD - use the Emergency Disk to restore (and tick the box for Optimise for SSD). I did this on a 2nd identical z50, and it worked also. A bit slower though - it took quite a few hours.

This was a bit fiddly, maybe partially because I was trying to replace an HDD that which I suspect had problems. To get MiniTool Partition Tool to run, I had to: 1. Scan my old disk, and repair. The MiniTool choked on my HDD the first few times, until I cleaned it up. 2. Have to shut off EVERYTHING else that's running while MiniTool does the migration. That's not just closing apps that are obviously open. I had to use Windows Task Manager to kill a bunch of programs running in the background (e.g., McAfee security, various others). Otherwise the MiniTool would stop, and it did NOT proceed after a restart (as the pop-up indicated it would). Since it took about 8 hours to run each time (before hanging), it took several days overall to get my HDD migrated. But eventually it worked, and my new drive runs fine, w/o loss of data. Suggestion: If you have a way, you might want to backup all your data on the old drive to a network drive, and then delete it from your old drive. By minimizing the total size of data to be migrating, the MiniTool app runs a lot faster. Then you can restore your data from the network drive onto the new disk. For my system, it was faster to move data off the old HDD to Network Attached Storage, and then restore it later, rather than have MiniTool transfer all the data itself. And you get a backup of your data anyway, just in case something goes wrong.

You made this so easy that between you and my brother (computer geek pro) I’ve got the confidence to do this. Thanks mate. I’ve been putting this off although I have everything to do it. Got the important work out of my way so that if anything goes wrong I’m not pressed for time pulling back ups. Blessings to you and yours

Just tried it - don't bother with the MiniTool Partition Wizard! Now it doesn't support the migration in the free version, and even if you choose not to install their bloatware, you still end up with a tool that doesn't migrate your OS unless you buy the Pro version, and you also get Avast Anitivirus, MiniTool backup and whatnot installed, so you need to clean up your OS after this.

@@smokingstan2501 , Your welcome. I just did the migration for my own laptop to a new Samsung Pro 860 SSD, and just used the tool (Samsung Data Migration Tool) they provide from their website. Looks a bit dodgy, but gets the job done and works fine, including using the whole space (they state that it only works from same- to larger size disk) - all with defaults settings. Win10 activation code and all was still intact, so looks like M$ doesn't tie it to the HD serial anymore.

I've just brought a new HP Laptop with AMD Ryzen 3 fitted, But with the pre-installed Windows 11, The SSD drive has very limited space left over. So I brought a new 2.5 inch HD of 1 TB and will use this video as a way to do the OS move over! I also got now a Wavlink USB 3.0 Dual Bay Docking Station which states it can automatically move one HD ( 2.5 or 3.5 ) over to another of either size the full drive with one button press no PC needed! Or you can just plug in the USB cable and use the PC to move stuff. And it was only under £30 on Amazon. Thanks for the help video BTW.

At 5:13 a note about the bios popped up. He kind of glossed over that without explanation. Since he replaced the old hard drive with the new SSD I guess he didn't have to mess with the bios since the new SSD was the only drive connected? If 2 drives were connected then I guess changes would have to be made to the bios.

This is a great guide for upgrading to an SSD. I'd mention though, the free version of the MiniTool software does NOT allow you to migrate your OS, they ask for you to get a paid subscription. I simply googled and found another (EaseUS) that let you install a 7-day trial version to get the job done. I am going to cancel the subscription before they start charging me.

Great tutorial. One question: the cloning software mentions possible need to change BIOS. Could you please tell me what needs changing in BIOS; is it the boot up order? Thanks
@errolmcinnes7938
@errolmcinnes7938 7 жыл бұрын
yes, the reference is to the boot order. Using Partition magic, you always want to use USB boot first. at the start the usb drive is unbootable. At the point where you saw him get the error, the system reboots to the newly bootable usb drive to complete the clone. Failing to do so will result in the clone not completing.

errol mcinnes Could there be an issue if the laptop is configured for duel-boot? I am thinking of changing my SSD for a larger one, but my laptop can boot with both Windows and Linux. Might this cause problems or should the partition wizard sort it all out?

Alex L, though you asked your question a while back, and probably resolved the issue, let me answer your question if a new user is curious. The answer to your question is that the video applies to dual boot drives too. I have a Win 7, and Win 10 dual boot arrangement which I copied from a sluggish hard drive to the SSD. It made my laptop useable again.

Hello. Some manufacturers put a hidden partition to store the data for customers' restoration. Let's say if I am upgrading from a ThinkPad, how the hidden partition and its functions could be migrated to the SSD? Or if I am really care about moving everything single thing from my original HDD, shall I just pull it out first and then clone it to the new SSD and then put the SSD in? Thanks!

I did the migrating with the ssd connected internally in the optical drive. I chose the option to transfer and keep the old drive, not remove. It seems the system is not booting from the new drive. It is still booting from the old one as everything was copied, not loved. Did I go wrong somewhere? Would it be different if I do start off with the USB connection? How do I now make it boot off the new drive?

Thanks a lot. This is exactly what I was looking for. Demoted my laptop just for traveling. So I didn't need a big SSD anymore. Transferred what I wanted to a smaller older SSD which I didn't use anymore (including the settings and the OS) and it worked like a charm. I have been trying other programs for cloning before but they would only allow you same size or bigger ones as the destination drive. Which makes sense in most cases but not in mine. Sometimes you want to use your old stuff because it's still good enough for the things you need it for.

using Partition Magic, you want to clone the ENTIRE hard drive, sector for sector, bit for bit. That ensures that all files are properly copied, including boot sector.

Is their any way to just clone the boot sector and not any other files to a new SSD? Because my 1tb HDD is almost filled up and when I try to clone it using the program to my new 250gb SSD, it says theirs not enough space, of course.
@psdaengr911
@psdaengr911 7 жыл бұрын
Trey Hilton A hard drive or SSD has a boot sector from the factory. The act of creating a partition initializes the MBR in the boot sector to locate the partition(s). You do not clone the MBR or boot sector becasue it is matched to the logical geometry of the drive.

I have a RAID array on an older PC. Will this transfer work if I clone the disks to an SSD and change the settings in the PC's BIOS so that it no longer sees the RAID settings? I've previously cloned the HD on my laptop onto an SSD and swapping the disk for the SSD and it worked flawlessly.

Question, I upgraded my first laptop and this worked perfectly. No issues but I have been trying to upgrade another laptop and having issues. I do the exact same thing. I am moving my primary hard drive, 750 gb to a new 500 gb ssd hard drive. 750 gb hard drive only has about 50 gb's of data on it so there is plenty of space. I run the minitool program, do the restart to finish option. It restarts but the 500 gb hard drive now says I have 204 mb free of 796 mg. Obviously it's not bringing all the data over. It just brings over files that say, Bin, Root, Recovery, RicaTools, TFR, bootmgr WinREPartition and that's it! I have done this several times, I have used the disk management took to make sure I delete all partitions. I assign it a letter, Drive D, I plug it in again via USB 3.0, it shows 500 GB's of space. I run the MiniTool program and again I am left with the SSD hard drive showing 204 mb free of 796 mb. Any ideas? I am at a loss.
