Is Windows Defender Enough To Stay Protected
Microsoft Windows Defender is getting closer than ever when it comes to competing with other third-party antivirus software, but in my opinion, it’s still not good enough. Its OK for basic free protection, but it’s certainly not good enough compared to dedicated antivirus programs like ESET, Kaspersky, Bitdefender and Norton. I would say its not quite as good at protection you against Ransomware as other leading software and Windows Defender also struggles in removing infections once they are on the pc system running live.

Funny enough I just started using Windows Defender since I just built a new PC. Had good experience with it in my laptops. Was using ESET for almost 2 decades and no problems really until I finally retired my old PC a week ago. It has always been my favorite due to how lightweight it is but I think performance impact is not that relevant in modern mid-high end system these days. Just gonna stick with Defender for now and see if it's good enough for me.

Defender is generally fine. The only snag is it only really works well providing you remain connected to the internet. If you are offline the protection really drops. Also I would always advise to use the controlled folder access feature as if you are relying on it it's the only way to ensure you don't get stung by ransomware.

Using two can cause performance issues. Only one AV can be hooked into the I/O efficiently at a time. If you want to check whether defender or malware bytes is hooked in use the eicar test string in a notepad. Whichever one shows the detection first is the one thats hooked in.

That's why microsoft include for free the Malicious software removal tool. and just so you know defender regularly test to be 98% effective. with as much as kaspersky and Bitdefender waver their average test result is about the same. Defender is even more effective if you use Defender UI with it. I've seen test 100% with Defender Ui. all Defender UI does is unlock advanced features of windows defender like advanced ransomware protection. By the way Malwarebytes is awesome. Very useful video. Like with all other maladies, prevention is better than cure. That's as much related to an individual's online behaviour and habits as it is to having antivirus software. For my part, I've relied on Windows Defender almost exclusively for the past few years. I'll sometimes run a scan with something different just to double-check, but so far so good. Hi Bri, Bitdefender firewall was suggested to me so I paid for the pro version. I then spent a huge amount of time searching what the Bitdefender firewall wanted me to decide what to let through or what to block. I called Bitdefender and they wasn't helpful, they basically said I should know or search what their firewall is asking me yes or no, I wanted premium protection, but with Bitdefender I had to tell the software what to do in the firewall. I blocked some things that were safe and let through unsafe ones so after a year I cancelled Bitdefender as I had to do all the work for the firewall many times in one hour. My windows defender doesn't hassle me every ten minutes like Bitdefender did. Are there any pro or premium software that doesn't expect the user to tell the firewall what to let through every ten minutes. This was helpful. Thanks

I agree with your summation and tend to recommend Bitdefender, Avira and Kaspersky for a free option. For people that want to use Defender, I tend to recommend they use with a better firewall or enhance the existing one with something like Windows Firewall Control. Due to the mess of a UI I also recommend using an alternative front end, like Defender UI or Windows Defender Configurator. Both alternative front ends offer much better default profiles than the Defender defaults.

@Overonator
@Overonator Жыл бұрын
The best kinds of antivirus is the one that prevents you from running malware in the first place. If that fails, then the best way to remove malware (short of nuking everything) is to not run antivirus removal on an infected OS while the infected OS is not running. So it's best to run before Windows boots because if Windows is not running then neither is the Windows malware. That's why I like the bootable antivirus products that have networking support where they can download the latest detections and get to work scanning for malware on a Windows drive that is not running. You increase your odds of removing malware by running the malware scan outside of the infected OS.

Great video! Use the offline scanner in Defender to try and remove the malware. It actually does a decent job at flushing them out although it might not get all at once but good enough to stabilize the OS and then another third party tool should completely removed the rest of the viruses.

Then I also CLONE my drives every 2 months just in case I get a hard to remove virus or Ransomware attack. Yea, it might be overkill, but I lost all of my C: drive data while running Windows Vista back in 2008 after being infected by a nasty pop-up virus; My Avast antivirus program failed to detect it; I think it was a worm virus because it kept replicating itself in other folders. I resorted to "Nuke and Pave." I went back to Windows XP, then upgraded to Windows 7 when it came out the next year.

Perhaps this is nitpicking but I believe that it's no longer called Windows Defender, its called Windows Security which consists of Virus and threat protection, Account protection, Firewall, App and browser control and device security. If you turn on App control then he's pretty good at not allowing an app to make changes to the system unless you give it permission. I do, however agree that once a computer is infected, Windows Security is pretty useless. However, I find that you'd need various manual hands on security tools to get rid of the nasty viruses and malware anyway, no matter what you have installed.

Windows defender is quite good nowadays but still not that effective. My number 1 con with defender is with its buggy UI. Also sometimes when you start pressing action its not doing anything. 3rd party av still better for now.

Hello, windows security is just fine but you have to wait till it removes threats. Windows security has great malware protection but it removes the threats slowly. I have been using it since 2 years and I don't download things from untrusted websites! I am very cautious about those things. I also do not connect to other networks.

Defender is fine. The best thing you can do which most don’t is run in user mode. Then if the bad guy gets in he still can’t make changes. If you are in admin mode he has full access

I used to have Kaspersky since 2017 and last year decided not to renew the license. If you remain vigilant and not open suspicious attachments and not being stupid when you visit porm sites, Defender will suffice.

I used to have a Norton anti virus but does not stop from getting loop hole it mean hacker can turn the anti virus off bec of firewall did not detected it that was a bad software that does not fixed or patched for having loop holes . When Norton is turn off and the virus gets in people has more experience be a hacker that is number one become hacker bec won't prevents you from hacker getting inside . I wouldn't leave connection on all the time it wouldn't get in for not use computer.

duno man seems a little weird if you really were aiming to remove that virus you should have booted in safe mode, im not an IT but i do service laptops with basic stuff and now a days its rare to see an infected laptop since Win Defender does a really good job at erasing anything that can be a treath

If one is concerned about ransomware they can add Kaspersky free anti ransomware. it runs along side windows defender! lots of folks complain about defender but defenders test results always put it among the top 10 antivirus. The reality is wndows defender is going to keep getting better. my main problem with defender is it's itnerface is all over the place.

I have used them all in the past - If you are an astute and experienced user you probably wont need more than Windows defender - This is not applicable to business users! since the risk to business is greater and requires a better solution. It is without doubt inferior than other brands and especailly short on features. That said whenever any of my customers get infected, I ALWAYS do a complete OS reinstall!
