I realise I forgot to mention the 4th issue pouches without bayonet loops or Energa pouch were introduced around 1989.

Do you have anything on the South African kit from the 60s through the 70s? Very similar to UK kit !!

Even though the Rifle Grenade Adaptor was withdrawn from service....One wonders why the pouch was continued to made into the '80's. That pouch, in the 80's in BAOR, was ideal for, and used for your Knife/Fork/Spoon. Fitted perfectly.

It is odd indeed. I imagine the sealed pattern was never changed and subsequent contracts were simply let using the existing pattern until things finally changed in the very late '80s.

Memory is dim but I seem to remember keeping the right angle torch in the energa pouch, it was nearly 30 years ago lol I recently found one of the nylon ones so the hunt is now on to find a left hand one to make a pair
@RiflemanMoore5 жыл бұрын
Using the pouch to carry the torch is certainly something I've seen in photos too! I know Silvermans sell pairs of the nylon pouches, I was lucky enough to snag mine from them when they were on sale. The price on their site keeps creeping up.

Energa Pouch was also the perfect size for KFS

Patt '76 (or '75) Trials kit - aka "'58 Mk2". Just to make the evolution of '58 kit and trials kit of the time really confusing.

Used to see the energa pouch cut off at the bottom, so the right angle torch would fit in the pouch.

I think I have a set of 4th pattern somewhere, I don't recall any bayonet frog or ENERGA pouches on mine, I'll have to double check though.

They are, slightly surprisingly, not as easy to find as others. I assume because it was a very late change and only affected one or two production contracts.

Love the content man. Would these hold m4 mags since they copied the m-56

Is there any scenarios where 58 pattern would be used with the 303 Lee Enfield or would this be just used with the l1a1?
@RiflemanMoore5 жыл бұрын
I am not aware of this combination ever having taken place so I would sayit was used only with the L1A1 and latterly the L85. The older 1937 and 1944 Pattern web equipment did see service with the L1A1 however, so it was more the other way around, new weapons with old kit.

@@RiflemanMoore was 58 pattern ever used with the L85 then?
@simonsignolet56325 жыл бұрын
@@Neddyfram Yes. Briefly.
@andrewjohnston41275 жыл бұрын
@@Neddyfram I'd say around the early to mid 90s. My 58 pattern webbing and sleeping bag was replaced in 1994, we only got our SLRs replaced the year before so some units were still using it at that point.

I hated the 58 Pattern system of webbing with a passion. It was totally crap. It absorbed water like no tomorrow adding to the weight then when it dried out it shrank so much that it no longer fitted so a rollpin buckle was a neccessity. The waterbottle pouch was half the size of the waterbottle so you couldn't get it in if you took it out. I think I used 58 Pattern for a couple of months after passing out of the depot then just experimented and improvised lol. I used LC1 ammo pouches as they'd take SLR mags as well as SA80 mags, I used four 44 pattern drivers pouches (with the loop at the back) on the back of my belt as they rested a lot lower than kidney pouches so I could use my bergan without any problems. Mess tin and compo in one, USMC poncho (they fold up really small and are dead light compared to the old British issue one) in the next, water bottle and mug in the third and a PRC349 in the last with a hole cut in the side for adjusting frequency and a hole for the antenna. With the radio being on my belt and the antenna being at waist level I ceased to be a sniper target 🙂 as noone could see the radio. I bought a yoke from SASS Lancaster who did all the Gucci kit in the late 80's early 90's. Not unlike PLCE but a lot better as it had a loop for the proper shovel rather than the stupid folding one which was also crap. Being infantry did have it's advantages in that we could get away with a lot of unofficial webbing and kit that was issue just not issued to us, like trop trousers, SAS smocks, jungle boots etc on exercise in Germany LOL.
