Just brought back a lot of memories I remember carrying one . It was used right through the 80's until couger was introduced, We also carried the larger and heavier pye Westminster as well used for rural patrols . We also had a scramble device for some transmissions but normally it, as the PF70 not secure

We had those in the air cadets in the 90's. I think that there were even some still in stores because I seem to remember trying to get new radios and we got sent a load more of these.

The Pye pocketfone was a versatile radio capable of Marine, Air and Broadcast TX too. When Bono (U2) jumped into the crowd during Live Aid 1985, you briefly see a crew member with one around his neck. I purchased a box of PF70s in the late 80s when they were being discarded - I manage to get some working on the 145Mhz and 435Mhz amateur radio bands. Still have the box in the garage. Interesting video btw.

Many thanks! I don't suppose you might be able to help me in locating an example of the thin whip antena and maybe even a microphone fitted for an earpiece?

@@RiflemanMoore I will see what I have on Wednesday (day off). I don't have the actual earpiece - but I may have the microphone with earpiece socket. 😁

As well as the Pye radio. In the late 70s we were using the Stornophone radio. It had 12 channels

Interesting video as always. On the British Army in Northern Ireland you might find the YT channel 'Robert Kitson' well worth a look and getting in touch with.

Converted a Pye Pocket phone to Amateur Radio 70 cm wave band, in the late eighties. By the way my one is in Oxford blue, so I presume it is ex police. G1UYP

Great clip and subject. It also reminds me of the first and early Season episodes of the UK police drama 'The Bill' where they had a similar looking microphone attached to their shoulder strap/epaulette on their earlier issue white long sleeved 70's style 'police shirts' in summer (often with sleeves rolled up), and the dark blue jacket/coat with silver buttons for winter, and in later seasons the new white long or short sleeved police shirts which had a sewn on strip of material like a horizontal tab for the mic to be clipped or slotted into, the actual radio being attached to their waist belt. I wonder if the type of Police radios that they used may also have been used in Northern Island and/or their design was influenced by it, etc. Also, nice Glengarry for the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, kind regards.

Could you do a video about the ww2 British army pup tent I have one I don’t no how they were carried with the equipment
@davidbrennan660
@davidbrennan660 4 жыл бұрын
It seems British pup tents were not normally carried by a man, they were in camps and men moved in then moved out the tent as needed, the the tent was then moved by others to transport/storage until needed. The British Army didn’t have a European camping system in WWII, a man had a ground sheet and a Rain Cape, a temporary bivy being possible. Tents were held at a higher level I believe.
