As one pilot said, up here in Norrbotten is a unique area to fly in. Since the pilots stationed at F21 are probably also the best trained pilots, because they fly up among the mountain peaks. This may not seem like much BUT you have to know that the winters among the mountain peaks can be devastating and those who do not know this, are at great risk of crashing and dying. Just look at the Norwegian Hercules plane, which crashed on March 15, 2012 in Kebnekaise. It was the devastating winds that did this and it cost 5 people their lives. So being a pilot and flying among the mountain peaks places extra high demands and expertise regardless of the type of aircraft and helicopters.

Sweden had for a long period of time one of the world's best pilots with a lot of training and probably the biggest training ground in Europe at least. But since the government started spending less and less on defence the number of hours the pilots are flying has decreased a lot and in past decades, has been one of the lowest in Europe. I do not know, but, I would guess and hope that has changed now and they get all the time they need both in simulation and in the cockpit to become as good as they possibly can.

@@Nubbe999 Yes, the number of fighter pilots has decreased and flight time in real planes has decreased. Now Sweden has modern flight simulators that they can train a lot in and the advantage of having them is that they can train extra hard to fly in weather that is more short-lived or does not occur often in reality. But many people do not know that Swedish pilots have been training a lot more since 2008 and then also in the USA. Because before Sweden's membership in NATO, Sweden has had close cooperation with the USA and other NATO countries, which has allowed them to fly a lot. It was worse for a long time for those who fly helicopters, they had a shortage of dark flights. But that has increased if I am correctly informed. There has been increased flight training in the last 15 years at least. Just look in my city Kiruna which had a lot of military aircraft and helicopters that often flew mimics, when the regiment existed. Then after the closure, there were more deaths but since then there has been an increase again with helicopters and fighter aircraft.

Stefan (the pilot with the most flying hours in the Gripen at the moment) was once accidentally ejected out of the aircraft at a low level. Martin Baker had to redesign the ejection seat for the Jas 39 Gripen after that accident.

Well, Insatspilot is actually a pilot educated and ready to do war pilot duty's. It's educated and competent enough fighter pilot to be accepted into the war organisation.

It simply means the pilot is operational. The pilots get their wings before they are operational.

To put it into perspective, in Norrbottens county, where Luleå is the county capital(and where F21 is based) there is a total of 248 557 people living, around 2,6 residents per km2, the area is 98 911 km2, so the county is a little larger than the Irish island(84 421 km2). A majority probably live in the urban/built up towns/cities as well, so yeah, they got a lot of "freedom" to fly up there.

i wouldnt go so far to say that it gets "boring" with time and more experience, i would liken it to when you first learn to drive a car, its exciting, you're nervous and hyperfocused on every little detail, but eventually it becomes second nature where you dont even think about it much. ofcourse theres people that hate driving and just do it out of necessity, but nevertheless, thats how i would asume flying a fighter is like just on a much higher level

I started playing in rock bands at a young age. Chicks was never the carrot, it was the interest in music. Those who apply for jobs with extreme competition for the wrong reasons give up quite quickly.
