British Cheddar Cheese Scones are a beloved staple in British baking, perfect for adding a touch of savory goodness to any meal. These scones are known for their light, fluffy texture inside and their crisp, golden exterior.
The key to their deliciousness is the generous amount of mature cheddar cheese mixed into the dough. Each bite is packed with tangy, cheesy flavor, making them a great alternative to sweet scones. Sometimes, a bit of mustard powder is added to the dough to enhance the flavor even more.
Cheese scones are incredibly versatile. They're perfect for a quick snack or a part of a meal. Serve them warm in the oven, spread them with a bit of butter, and you have a simple yet satisfying treat. They pair wonderfully with soups and salads, adding a hearty, cheesy element to your meal.
Making cheese scones at home is straightforward. Mix your dry ingredients, rub in some cold butter until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, and stir in grated cheddar cheese. Then, add milk to bring the dough together, roll it out, cut it into rounds, and bake until golden brown.
The best part is that cheese scones are ready in no time. From start to finish, you can have a batch ready in under an hour. They’re an excellent go-to for something comforting and homemade without spending too much time in the kitchen.
Enjoy warm and fresh everyday cheese scones, with their cheesy goodness making any ordinary day feel special.

My Nan taught me this scone recipe. She always added Hot English Mustard from Colmans, being from Norfolk it makes sense. She said it made the cheese more cheesy. She also said that if your scone didn’t do the “pull apart” mark around the middle they were not cooked enough. Her cheese scones have stayed with the family and now I make them for friends on a regular basis in South Africa, still using Hot English Mustard but also I have added fresh herbs and on occasion smoked paprika. I love how food that is rooted in tradition, no more so than a scone, can transcend flavour profiles and travel the world. Fabulous. Thanks Rik, I’ve only been following your channel a while but I’m hooked and I have followed three of your recipes and loved them. I also am kinda jealous of your kitchen and appliances.

If you use buttermilk or soured milk instead of plain milk, it makes them fluffier with a little added kick. During gardening season, I add freshly chopped herbs (dill, parsley etc.) for a little variety. Very nice accompanied with beans, eggs or soup.

I would put jam with that butter and eat the bottom first. When my mother was a little girl she used to save her marzipan icing from the christmas cake until last but her older sister used to steal it. I remember that story so well that I ate the good stuff first in case one of my four brothers would swipe it. Must try your scones. ♥

Bottom first, so I save the best bit to last. These look so good with the cheese on top, yummo!!! I love savoury scones. I think they don’t need anything else but butter, especially 2hen they’ve just been made. I know what I’m making when I wake up. If I could do it quietly I’d go and make them now but knowing me I’d drop the tray on my stone bench top or the floor and wake everyone 8n the house up lol. Safer for me to wait till morning. I love scones, especially cheese ones, but they are one of those things that are at their best freshly cooked. They are never quite as nice the next day, unless you toast them. Toasted cheese scones are delightful. The toasting brings out more flavour in the cheese and freshens up the scone completely. Butter thickly with cold butter and voila! A beautiful crispy, toasty, deeply flavoured cheese scone. Have you ever toasted them Rik?

Lost in the pond terminology..in the U.S., we would call that a biscuit. But in the UK, a biscuit is what we would call a cookie. Still, it all tastes amazing, doesn't it?

Hi Rik, another brilliant recipe and one of my favorites, but i don't make them into individual scone i made 1lb loaf tin so i can slice it put into the oven to warm it up and have it with a nice slice of bacon delicious!!! keep them coming your enthusiasm in cooking everyday and showing us all your results and quirky re-inventions, and putting the wire rack in rather than the tin means there's more heat that can travel to the bottom of the tin just a suggestion.

I use half Red Leicester cheese (for the colour) and half of the strongest Cheddar I can find. As well as mustard powder, I add a little cayenne. Gives a lovely tang. Another trick is to freeze the butter then grate it into the flour. I do that with sweet scones as well.

Owing to Brexit, here in Amsterdam I can only find Irish Cheddar Cheese now. The English one, if it's ever available, is more expensive as an import from outside the EU unfortunately. At first I scoffed at the copy of the original but, by Jove, I think it's actually better. A stronger bite in the flavour and very creamy. So I'm going to try Irish Cheddar Cheese Scones tomorrow, Sunday. I reckon Irish Cheddar Cheese is another of the benefits of Brexit, for us in the EU, anyway. Thank for the recipe 🙏🏻
