I spent 4 years in the USAF in the mid 70's. The F-16 and the F-15 were just being introduced. The mainstay fighter at that time was the F-4. I recall them showing us a film of a F-4 and F-15 taking off on parallel runways at the same time. The F-15 got in the air first, accelerated and shot straight up to 10,000 feet, did a loop and dove on the F-4 just as it was lifting off from the runway. They've only made it even better in the 5 decades since.

Interesting fact. The F-15 Eagle was used in the 1983 Japanese toy line Diaclone for their transforming figures. They were sold in both gray and red and white and blue paint schemes, both of which were imported by Hasbro to become part of the first year of the Transformers toy line in 1984 as Starscream and Thundercracker. More paint schemes would be used and created to create more of these clones, and because of them sharing the same body type as Starscream, they have become collectively known as the Seekers. Safe to say, the F-15 Eagle is most definitely nostalgic and popular amongst Transformers fans old and new

The Airforce actually has an F-15 named Starscream for that reason, complete with Decepticon symbol. And to be clear, that is the name of the plane, not the callsign of the pilot.

McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, aka, JBLM, was home to the 318th Fighter Interceptor Squadron known as the Green Dragons. Every year the base would put on an airshow free to the public. The 318th would have a mock demonstration of an intercept mission where one of the F-15s would start rolling at the far south end of the runway. By the time it was at the halfway point it would already be airborne with gear up and full afterburner. As it passed show center it would pull straight up, the flames from the afterburners would hit the runway as it rocketed straight up and out of sight in just a few seconds. Sadly the 318th disbanded in the mid 80s, some aircraft ended up in Portland. I still miss seeing them at the shows.

Although I was in the Navy, the F-15 will be my favorite aircraft of all time. I was around 11 or 12 when I went to an air show and I saw the F-15 do it's air show. For me it's still the most amazing machine I have seen in action...especially the going literally 90 degree vertical immediately after take off until you couldn't see it anymore. Most planes would stall. That show, this plane is what got me interested in science and math and the military.

I was driving across the Lake Worth bridge near the Joint Reserve Base next to Fort Worth, Texas one afternoon when an F-18 flying low over the water approached the bridge. About 100 yards away from me the pilot suddenly turned the nose of the plane straight up. It took off, literally, like a rocket, the exhaust churned the water up as the jet surged upwards. The sound was deafening, and glancing up I could see it was still vertical though by now it was probably at least 1/2 mile up. It was really cool to see!

My cousin flew the F-15C and F-15E for over 15 years. His Air Force career ended when he was hit by a drunk driver and lost his leg below the knee. He has matched the Time to Climb record of 3 minutes and 27 seconds from a standstill on the runway to an altitude of 98,425 feet or 30,000 meters. The aircraft can reach speeds of 1,900 miles per hour and accelerate through the sound barrier going straight up.

One of only two major US airports that share their runways with a guard unit. It is breathtaking, to say the least, to see F15's come off of the runway and then immediately go near vertical. I have to say that his videos on the mosquito and the British fighter Ace from world war II are outstanding, and if you want some good old-fashioned British patriotism, I would watch those. Another fun one is the submarine that sunk a train. Apparently, that really happened. If you want to know about some war heroes, there's Sergeant Dan Daily, The ghost of baton, and Jake McNasty McNeese. Some really funny ones are the ones he does about the different weapons platforms, IE America's a blunderbuss, and the one on the Colt 1911 pistol. All of them are really good though. Have fun! The F-15 Eagle hasn't really been replaced by the F-22 Raptor because the Air Force plans to retire the F-22 Raptor in the 2030s, while the F-15EX Eagle II will replace the old F-15s and continue to fly for the foreseeable future.

There will likely be F-15’s flying when not only the F-22 but also the F-35 are both put to pasture. Better jet if you figure in reliability and everything else. Who the fuk cares if they show up on radar, it still outclasses enemy jets with ease. The only thing the train wreck known as the F-35 has going for it is the trillions of dollars put into it. Literally to much invested in it to quit. Lockheed Martin is damn lucky the American people haven’t demanded a warranty and rebates.

Your dates are pretty spot on, but your conclusion lacks some nuance. The f22 did replace the f15….. as the premier interceptor and air dominance platform. Ngad will replace the f22 in this role in the mid 2030s. F15ex is not intended to be a front line interceptor. It will likely fly past the f22, but not in the f22s role.

@@Typexviiib The old F-15D Eagle is being retired, but the F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15EX Eagle II will remain in production. Yes, the F-22 Raptor will be replace by whatever they decide to call the new NGAD fighter in the next decade. The F-15EX doesn't have to fill the F-22's role, the F-35A Lightning II will.
@Typexviiib

@@44excalibur i think you missed my point in that “replaced” means the role, not that its being retired. F4s remained in service for decades after the f15 and f14 replaced them as interceptors. F35 isnt a replacement for f22s role, it fills all the roles the f22 cant do very well. They are companion platforms much like the f15 and f16 or f14 and f18. F15e are bomb trucks, f15ex are ancillary bomb and missile trucks.
@44excalibur
@44excalibur Жыл бұрын
@@Typexviiib I meant in terms of the F-35's stealth capability, that's all. Also, the F-14 was intended as an interceptor. The F-15 was meant for air superiority. But yes, you're right about the F-4s. The F-22s might still hang around for a while.

It may have changed since I was in the Air Force, but I have not seen anything online that indicates there has been any other to achieve this ability. The F-15 was/is the only airplane that can ACCELERATE going straight up. That's like a space rocket for cryin' out loud. Think about that for a minute, accelerate, gain speed, in a pure vertical attitude. That's powerful.

Ironically, some of the jets that came before the F-15 were way faster, but were discontinued because military thinkers started to think that speed wasn't that important in comparison to the other systems aboard the aircraft. And with 5th and 6th gen Aircraft (stealth aircraft) they are almost entirely undetectable - at least the American ones, not so sure about Russia or China - so speed is now seen as a secondary statistic behind radar, stealth, and armament. I believe there were a whole slew of aircraft in the mid-late cold war that were designed to go at least Mach 3, which is 3.7 kilometers an hour, and 1029 meters a second.

A simple way of saying it is the F-15 has a thrust to weight ratio greater than 1. So it could be stood on end on the ground and go straight up.
