I told the judge I was broke and on an extremely tight budget. Nothing happened until about a year ago when I got a new job and was on the books for first time since then. I was garnished for 4 months and half of my tax return was taken. The odd part is I've had more serious and expensive hospital visits but at different hospitals and never paid and never heard from them.

No, those of us without health insurance don’t go to hospitals. I remember hiking with my mom once and she slipped and twisted her ankle really badly and couldn’t walk, and a lady kept insisting she call 911 and my mom ended up having to scream and cuss at her to get her to stop because they’d have sent an ambulance. In America, many of us who grew up without insurance, we just didn't go to the hospital unless it was an emergency. They aren't joking at all about the do it yourself healthcare. I work in a hospital and can't afford medical care despite paying for insurance. Not even joking. It isn't that the hospital won't treat you, they will, but it is unaffordable. No one wants to bankrupt themselves on a minor injury.

yeah, it's the middle class who suffers. most people outside of the US don't realize that health care is free for the poor, (except for adults who don't have children in states that didn't expand Medicaid). I’m the United States, emergency care must be provided by law, but paying for it is a whole new emergency for many folks. It’s the most common direct and indirect cause of bankruptcy here. “In 2020, private health insurance coverage continued to be more prevalent than public coverage at 66.5 percent and 34.8 percent, respectively.” So 35% of Americans get government paid healthcare. Most of the US is insured. It’s not as big of tragedy has people make it out to be. Here is another statistic “As of 2021, over 82 million Americans were enrolled in their state’s Medicaid and CHIP programs. This number is up by 11.85% from 2020, when close to 74 million were enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP. Medicaid provides low-cost insurance for individuals who cannot afford individual health insurance or do not receive health coverage through an employer.”

If you work minimum wage, they probably don’t provide you health insurance. If you work an ok job they usually provide a health insurance option (typically you pay for part or all of the policy with your wages). That quality level of healthcare coverage is basically identical whether you’re making $25k/yr up to $500k/yr. At which at that point you may as well just not even have insurance. You insure your damn self and get better healthcare access.

If you get hurt you can get treatment even without insurance. Same goes for being sick. Yes, the hospital will bill you and it will be a bad price since you don't have large insurance companies negotiating for a price on your behalf. But, the crucial context is that health debt is not enforceable in the same ways as other debt. Meaning, if you die in debt....you win. You can't be charged for negligence and the debt can't be passed onto others.

Health insurance in America is basically just there, in case you are going to die. We pay a few thousand a year for insurance; and still get insane doctor bills. Insurance companies just take your money, and then tell you whatever you had done at the hospital was not a medical necessity, refuse to to pay for it; then leave the bill in your lap.
@HamburgerHelperDeath3 жыл бұрын
If you have no money, you get free health care from Medicaid. If you are hurt, they have to do surgery. It’s the people who are under insured or make money but don’t buy insurance who are screwed. Technically you could owe $150,000 to the hospital and they won’t do anything (send it to collections or default the debt) if you are paying as little as $10 a month toward the debt. It’s pretty messed up.

In the U.S., if you don't have health insurance and you go to the hospital, they will make sure you don't die and then hand you an enormous bill. However, if there is anything that requires further attention to make you 100% again, such as bones out of line, they will then refer you to a specialist, to whom you will have to pay another enormous bill, which almost no one follows up on, because they are broke.

It's called Medicaid for anyone under 65 or Medicare for people older than 65 years old. These services are specifically for low income and are pretty much what universal health care is, I mean how do you think a single woman in ghetto can have 10 kids in the U.S and also live in a house and feed themselves and children, the U.S has crazy social benefits for the poor, therefore if you're poor in the U.S you get good health care but it's the middle class that suffers the most if they don't have insurance, before the employers would hook their employees up with insurance but since Obama care people were forced to switch to Obama care which made a lot of people angry because it was a lot more expensive and less extensive then their previous insurance plan. The U.S needs to reform their health care insurance system, as of right now the U.S pays the most health care in the world by a large margin.

I live in Texas and I make less than 3000 usd a month straight up, mainly because my job helps me with college but that’s intern pay. I have some sort of autoimmune thing going on because I get a ton of rashes and I’m constantly and consistently sick in every way (sinuses, vomiting, skin rashes and raw sores and nonstop headaches) since I turned about 20. The only info I could get at the er is my immune system cell counts are all sky high or bottomed out but none are level. I can’t get diagnosed because i literally can’t afford any insurance plan with my son covered also. So I tried Obama care and they wanted 500 a month. That’s not remotely doable and that’s the problem. I know when I finish my degree I will be able to get insurance and for less money because my company will offer it. But I might get even sicker before then if I don’t find the problem. So I guess that’s the main downside to private health care in the us.

6:30 Ya American healthcare is trash. If you don’t have insurance it will be thousands of dollars. If you do have insurance it’s hundreds of dollars. I’d you go in for one issue at a hospital your bill is going to be more expensive then a scheduled checkup at a doctors office. Reason: Doctors in the United States are all specialists not typically general practitioners. So you need to get referrals and contact multiple different individuals about each separate issue and pay each of them individually. A checkup usually only requires a nurse and less then 20 minutes of a doctors time. An emergency visit includes: ambulance, oxygen, heart-beat reading, finger clip, machines, gurney, paramedics, fluids, medical equipments, multiple nurses, multiple specialized doctors- head/shoulders/knees/toes/eyes/throat/nose/brain/spinal/bone/blood/bile etc then all the costs of drugs/bandages/tape/casts/x-rays and x-ray technicians (lead jackets) and any other possible person and the janitor. It’s also why a lot of Americans have chronic health concerns or why many Americans have missed diagnoses. Many doctors intentionally or unintentionally focus on their specialty and if there’s an overlapping segment where the condition may cross into another doctors field they may wait to suggest that as an issue and try to further explore an option that is in their specialty. (Say you have a disorder that affects the brain/spinal systems/muscles but when you go to the doctor you go specifically for the symptom muscle cramping. That doctor may resolve the problem of muscle cramps by prescribing a medication that relaxes muscles- that’s the treatment* however they do not take x-rays/mris or other scans to determine what the source cause is of the issue. They specialize in muscles in arms/legs/back and mobility not specifically brain issues or illnesses that as a result have those symptoms. So they may overlook the glaring problem for immediately temporary solutions that won’t resolve themselves because the main cause of the issue was never treated. And that’s not involving surgeons who have a different pay rate then general doctors, emergency doctors, specialists, etc Your insurance may only cover specific hospitals in a single state so you have to drive to the correct hospital to receive insurance but you also have to verify that the nurses/doctors/staff all fall under that insurance as there’s some instances where staff work at other locations/transfers when understaffed and thus may not fall under your insurance plan as they technically work under a different branch but are at that location.
