Millie fully loaded trucks take a long time to stop. They do NOT stop on a dime. Yes it can be a drivers fault - at the same time it's a big difference in stopping distance. Looking up the data we're talking 140-170 meters vs 40-50 meters for a car.

We receive trucks with double stacked pallets of bottled water, adding up to around 120,000 pounds. There's no quick way to stop 120,000 pounds of water, it's basically a hurricane at that point. The trucker can try their best, but physics always wins.

I'm a truck driver, it takes longer to stop because of the weight. The air brakes on trucks are slower to activate than hydraulic brakes and also the trailer brake are 60 feet farther away than car brakes. I wish cars knew this. In America, trucks are big and it takes them a while to stop because of the trailer. They can't slam on the brakes when a car in front of them suddenly goes from 100 kilometers per hour to 30 kilometers per hour.

Trucker here. At 2:35, it looks like a chunk of ice flew off the other truck's roof and hit his windshield. It's a known hazard in the winter here in the US. Especially since 90% of truckers aren't provided access to a safe way to remove snow and ice from trailers. Damage and injuries caused by flying ice and snow is rare but it does happen. At 5:30, technically an accident would have been the fault of the truck on the left. Even though he was indicating, it's still his responsibility to make sure the way is clear before changing lanes. The truck on the right isn't legally required to do anything. That being said, the guy on the right was definitely being a douche canoe. Common and professional courtesy both dictate that you back off to make room for the other truck. It's not only polite, it helps mitigate the risk of an accident. This is assuming of course that both trucks are going similar speeds. If there's a larger speed differential, that chages things. The passing truck in that case should just wait until he's further ahead. At the end of the day though, the responsibility is on the one changing lanes.

I had a dump truck lose a rock the size of a fucking golf ball into my windshield at highway speeds. It sounded like someone had shot at me and the plastic was the only thing that kept it from fully entering through the windshield. It also hit low on the windshield so after having the shit scared out of me it took a few seconds before I figured out what had actually happened. That has nothing to do with what you said, really, but your detail seemed like a good place to pop in my little anecdote.

A few years ago, here in Alaska, a truck hauling highway fill dropped a rock about the size of a soccer ball. Also a fellow trucker here...to me the truck on the left should be giving a ssfe braking distance for the truck he ia passing before he changes lanes. You are right the truck being passed shouldnt have to back off at all...also a side note in the rain always give another vehicle plenty of room before changing lanes in front of them so the wash off your wheels doesnt blind them...we have alot more tires kicking up that water and in heavy rains it can be very blinding even with the wipers on max speed.

06:27 That is not a two lane highway with oncoming traffic, that is two lanes of a divided 4 lane highway. The white dotted lines mean it is a passing zone. The passing truck should have maintained a higher speed until he was far enough ahead to see the recording driver's truck in the mirrors, then pull into the right hand lane.

I agree. You cant force your way into the lane. That being said, I would’ve slowed down. Most semis on the road these days are governed. If that speed is close enough to each other it could take forever to clear enough. Drivers like the guy in the green truck annoy the shit outta me. I won’t move over on him but come on. Not a pro driver, but the business I was at the time had me driving semis quite a bit in the US and once in Canada. What the average car driver doesn't understand is that handling a vehicle that can be 70 feet long, weighs up to 80,000 lbs and traveling 55 to 70 mph is no where near what driving a car is like. You cannot turn, slow down and stop on dime. The laws of physics and motion make that impossible. Radical maneuvers can cause a semi to jack knife or roll over, you get hit by one at speed and you loose.
@bendyrland7213

@@bendyrland7213 Example. 4 lane hwy, I'm in 3rd lane, semi about 100' ahead, I'm 55-60 mph which paced the semi in far right lane. See in rear view car approaching fast in 2nd lane, glance over as it goes by, gal on cell phone, over takes the semi, immediately cuts right in front of it making for an exit ramp. Semi locks up tractor & trailer, tires immediately started pouring smoke. Driver kept it right in the center of the lane, straight as an arrow. Was incredulous at the car driver stupidity and very impressed with the semi driver. Whoever that was knew what they were doing, experienced. Had to be pure reflex, it happened so fast.

First Rule of the Road - the right-of-way goes to the tallest tires. Trucks aren't cars - they're 40-ton freight trains on asphalt! They take a LOT longer to change speed (in either direction) and their high center-of-gravity means that fast turns or strong winds can roll them over. (Counter-intuitively, it takes an empty truck longer to stop than a loaded one.) You have to have a spotless five-year driving record to even be allowed a learner's permit, then another 4 to 6 weeks of hands-on training (often on abandoned roads or old tarmacs) before a trainee is allowed to take a rig into traffic. Even after getting their license, a new driver has to train with a veteran co-driver for another 4 to 12 weeks before being allowed out on their own.

This is coming from someone who grew up with truck drivers realistically. You need to give big truck drivers at least 10 sec or more to do things. Full load or not compared to a regular they can't stop fast enough in the first place so whether someone has there hazards on or someone wanting to merge lanes there's really nothing they can do in terms of stopping or slowing down.
@TheFlooringInspector82
@TheFlooringInspector82 2 жыл бұрын
I understand her point about letting them in, but realistically why should the driver who already occupies the lane have to reduce speed for a driver who is going to merge and possibly hit him? It is at the end of the day the responsibility of the driver changing lanes to do so when safe. Ultimately the driver did "give way" to the merging truck to avoid a collision but he had no responsibility to do so until the other driver put him in a position of having to avoid a potential accident.

In that case, it looked like they were going a similar speed. While he's not required to, the guy on the right should have backed off a little to let the guy in. It's common courtesy and it reduces the chance of an accident. I take actions in my truck all the time to reduce risk even though I'm technically not required to. It's all a part of earning the title "profile driver". One reason I'm at 1.5 million accident free miles in my career is that I assume the other guy is about to do something stupid and I take action to mitigate my risk.
@keriezy

5:50 In many US States it is illegal to slowdown while changing lanes. You have to match speeds with the person you are getting int front of. It is cutting other people off, plain and simple. If you are making others disengage cruise control in order to not hit you then you cut them off. Do NOT get in front of someone that is moving faster than you are willing to move, get behind them. It's basic common sense. It just shows how selfish some people are when they drive. Making everyone wait on them and not caring about others drivers.

One rule that I learned getting my license back in the 70's was that the one area around your car, that you have control over, is the space in front of you. Oddly enough, they said the same thing in my CDL school and when I was training. Later, when I became a trainer, I added a few other rules. 1. Never pass up a chance to piss. You can make some really dumb decisions under that pressure. 2. No one can see you (you'd be surprised at how often that is used as an excuse), and those that can are looking at a payday. If you think that is paranoid, you haven't been paying attention. 3. No load is worth your life. Plan on crap going wrong and build in extra time, when possible. Don't wait until the last minute to get to your next stop. 4. Be kind. Everyone has bad days. Everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone is doing it because they are a butthole. A little kindness is the lubrication that makes society run (relatively) smoothly. That said, there are wolves in the world. Drive defensively. (See #2)

Driving a big truck is nothing like driving a car or a pickup truck. The amount of space is takes to come to a stop is unreal. My Dad drove for a while when I was a kid. So I learned so much respect about them from him. He did get a kick out of me when I was driving my convertible down I-77 from Virginia to South Carolina. About halfway through North Carolina I hit traffic. Beside of a big truck. When I realized I was in the wrong lane, I looked over and asked the trucker if I could get in front of him. He said yes. I told him thank you. Then I think told everyone in range about it because after that, every trucker I passed honked and waved at me. Made the drive so much more fun!

I grew up around trucks my entire life, I’m 37, 38 in a few months. My grandparents raised me and my grandpa was a truck driver. From the age of 16 to the age of 80. He is 86 now, so he finally retired 6 years ago. He owned his own company and drove cross country until I came along. After I was born, he started driving locally and was home every night. I would go with him on the truck all the time. The stories I heard as a kid, like, he t-boned a tractor that decided to try to cross the road in front of him, thought the guy driving the tractor was dead because of the damage to the tractor but he was actually standing off the side of the road talking to someone that had a house where the accident happened. He has wrecked a few trucks that I can remember, a few trailers (he drug a trailer for over 30 miles because the breaks has locked up). I knew how to clean the trailers out at a young age, knew how to drive the truck, etc. My uncle is a truck driver. He has had a few really bad wrecks, someone hydroplaned, crossed 4 lanes of traffic and a center median and hit him head on. That person did not survive and they were finding body parts up to a week later. I have multiple other family members that are truck drivers as well. My husband grew up in a trucking family as well. His dad drove until he died of cancer. He has 3 brothers that are truck drivers now. I respect trucks and know how to drive around them. I don’t freak out (like some people do) or do any of the stupid shit that these people are doing. FYI: Swift drivers are some of the worst truck drivers.

I have had my CDL since 2003, I've driven everything from hotshot to flatbed to refer. The amount of people who don't understand trucks cant stop on a dime is amazing. Coupled with the fact that I got a lot of hate for being a female driver. Also, some other driver's are not good at all. The biggest problem now is hardly anyone uses a CB, which helps to know if something is ahead you should be prepared for and the fact that these big trucking schools are throwing new drivers out on the roads when they aren't ready. Literally had a call from a new driver once saying they or their co-driver were at the shipper but couldn't back in to the dock... I mean, you need to know how to handle and drive the truck and trailer before being thrown to the wolves. I have had my fair share of 4 wheelers that have almost caused me to wreck also.

Amen to that. I had one driver ask me to spot for him at a truckstop with two empty spaces on either side, and a straight shot into it. He was driving for cr England. I told him as nicely as possible to tell them that he wasn't ready to be on his own. The guy who trained me spent three hours a day just backing up and parallel parking. The only time I got to drive down the road was to get to the practice area. When I took my test though I had zero problems, but another guy was there trying for the sixth time. He failed the first test, and the second before the officer pulled the plug on him. The first one was straight backing, the second was parallel parking. I left from there with my first load. First, drivers do fall asleep at the wheel, we were hit by someone who did just that and smashed our whole drivers side in. Secondly, on avg it is recommended to give a minimum of 5 car links of passing space in front of an 18 wheeler truck because it takes so much room for a truck to slow down, otherwise you risk the truck crashing into the back of a vehicle or flipping, which could hurt even more drivers.

6:00 it's not that simple. the lane change truck started to indicate the lane change as the tail end is coming up on the video recording truck and then immediately moved into the lane without much regard for what was already there, that was not a safe lane change, especially for a truck. the merging truck should have waited till they were a full truck length ahead before indicating then merging over. truck braking, acceleration, and maneuverability isn't like passenger cars that you drive/are used to. it's also much worse when one truck does that to another truck. of all the drivers on the road, they should know better than to do that.

Howdy! Just watched y'all's video, and have been watching y'all's videos for a while now. I've been driving a truck for 6 years and have had other drivers, (big trucks included) hit me, cut across my hood, have delt with wrong way drivers and even pedestrians intentionally trying to commit suicide using my truck... One thing to under stand is we have extremely large blind spots, while a lot of the time, we never even see the other vehicle that may be right next to our hood. A fully loaded truck, takes 2 entire football fields to come to a complete stop, and that's in perfect conditions. We are also trained to look for a way out of the situation before anything else, for that exact reason.. When it comes to a driver merging or overtaking it is best to hold your lane, as it takes time to get 40 tons to move one way and then back the other way safely, while not having a load shift. Not to mention if we are going up a hill or mountain, we are foot to the fall and still getting pulled back by gravity, so the moment we slow down, depending on the size of the incline, we are now struggling to make it up... The best advice I can give anyone when driver around us big trucks is this. We are more scared of you than you are of us. If you need around, please do it when legal to do so, and hastily. The longer you are beside us, the more dangerous it is for everyone. Especially if you are in the only lane we have to avoid and accident. If you're behind us and you can't see our mirrors, then we can't see you (we literally have no idea you're behind us). Most importantly. Please be patient.

I was on the I-10 freeway a few years back heading home for Christmas the sun was rising all was quite and easy going then a big flat chunk of ice came off the truck up a head of me it fell on the car's behind it. All that hit my car were bit's left from the car ahead of me. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

At 9:55 ? The car came to a complete stop in the lane of traffic on the freeway... Yes the truck needed to slow down, but "technically" it was the cars fault for stopping in the lane. The car didnt just come to a "Stop" is chugged or died out and would have rolled long enough to get over to the shoulder.
@MannyBrum
@MannyBrum 2 жыл бұрын
I think whose fault it is shouldn't cross a drivers mind until the situation is over. People see someone doing something they shouldn't or making an assumption about someone doing something they shouldn't and then they are like "Well, I don't have to slow down because it will be his fault" or "This guy is about to run the red light, I could slow down and let him go but I'm going to speed up and let him hit me". They're not thinking "Hey, maybe this guy had a heart attack behind the wheel" or something like that, which if you're going to assume anything in the moment, that would be more productive.

6:20 company trucks are usually governed at a speed on cruise and a different speed on the peddle. He probably hit the peddle to go faster so the other truck couldn't pass, or the truck passing had a heavier load and lost speed climbing the hill.

Keep in mind in the US our white lines in the middle means the road is going in the same direction, where as yellow line separates traffic going in opposite direction. A solid line white or yellow means do not cross or pass, especially when the are double solid yellow or white.

@kristend344

It's also dangerous. While the person in the car is deliberately attempting to get hit, and can be seriously injured - the trucker can also end up jack-knifing in an attempt to avoid hitting the car. Trucker started really using dash-cams to protect themselves from break-checkers.

@johnwilliams8818

People do not realize that those trucks stop a lot faster than folks think. If the trailer is loaded the weight helps stop it fast. If it's empty the brakes can stop it fast. People tailgate right behind the trucks and the drivers don't know the cars are there. If "YOU" cannot see the Truck Driver in their side mirror? "They" cannot see you! The best and safest rule for driving behind or alongside a truck? Is to make sure YOU keep their side mirror in your sight. And that YOU can see the driver's reflection in the truck's mirror.
@jeanetteallan9227

I think your comment is aimed at drivers tailgating the semis, because for drivers cutting too close in front of the semis or brake checking them, no, they don’t stop as quickly as you think and sometimes can’t even see a small car too close to them, the hood blocks the view.
@johnwilliams8818
@johnwilliams8818 2 жыл бұрын
Riiight... That is what I was commenting... And I drove a Semi for years and have had to stop very quickly... Depending on the weight (empty to fully loaded) can indeed affect how quickly you can stop. Which is why you should always stay far enough behind the trucks so that you can see their mirror and the driver reflection. If you can see the driver, the driver can see you.

OK. one more....this is really in my wheel-house. I was raised in the backseat of a police car. My maternal grandparents were both officers of the Summit County sheriff's dept. in Ohio. They would take us (my bro..sis and I) along with them when they were on duty (not only official duties, but babysitting as well). It was small town stuff. But, boy did I receive an education! I know the ins & outs of who should have done this and who shouldn't have done that Grandfather said, "let me follow anybody for a mile, and I can issue a ticket." (What a sweetie). While I have enjoyed this video, I'm holding my breath at every turn and can critique nearly every move. Thanks, you are fun.

10:05 Yes, the truck should have seen it further ahead, but on our highways there are often minimum speeds. typically if you can't go 45 mph, your actually breaking the law by driving on the highway. It take a truck with a full load close to 10 times longer to stop then a car, and so if your going 20 MPH slower then the speed limit, a truck won't be able to slow down in time. On some of the other videos, understand that on a double yellow line, your not allowed to pass, that's why some of those are getting on here. They do an illegal pass and then cut the truck off to get over. Don't matter if you signal or not.

In America on small two lane highways if there is a solid yellow line on the left and a broken yellow line on the right. The vehicle on the broken line can cross over to the wrong way line to pass a slower car or truck. But if is two solid yellow lines there is no passing allowed

9:47 This reminds of that time when my sibling had to drive on a donut tire (little spare tire for emergencies),and I just kept an eye on the people approaching from behind. It's absolutely ridiculous how many people didn't pay attention to BRIGHT HAZARD LIGHTS! I would tell my sibling to get on the shoulder whenever someone wasn't showing any signs of slowing down or changing lanes. Which ended up as a total of 47 times! Open your eyes people! 😂

Some people are only alive cuz paying very close attention, as far as the why sometimes for insurance scams and injury payouts others just do because they perceived u did something to them, they forget if I rear end them I will doing so with upwards 5,000,000 pounds of force per square foot, death can occur in as little as 20 MPH with a fully loaded truck hitting broadside.

You'd be shocked with the differences! I don't remember the exact times and length 🤔 REMEMBER: WE ALL HAVE TO SHARE THE ROADS WITH ONE ANOTHER. THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES TO CONSIDER.
