@christhornycroft3686 Жыл бұрын
That seems to be the big racist trope that makes zero sense. Jewish people supposedly as a race run the world through the banks, but they’re simultaneously communists trying to take down capitalism. Both of those things are ridiculous and they also can’t be true at the same time. You don’t go into private enterprise if you’re a communist. That kind of defeats the purpose. You’re going to be a businessperson so you can take down private business. That makes less than no sense, but blind prejudice doesn’t.

The interview he's referring to with Sean Connery was a 1976 playboy article. So almost 50 years ago. When he passed, a few people...let's say from a certain demographic (that he touches on early in this bit) brought up that he basically was a "woman beater". I'm SURE it was unintentional that they just happened to leave out that in the context of the article, Sean was asked a pretty leading question about an incident where a woman got in his face a little bit in the 60's or early 70's, yelling at him and wouldn't let him pass and wouldnt get out of his way and let him leave, on a movie set. But it's the internet in the 2020's. Context never matters, you're judged and executed by out of context quotes. That's the point of his bit. Meanwhile, 'Chanel' makes hundreds of millions of dollars all over the world and nobody cares about what she did...because MEN.
@MrKeefy1967 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're justifying it? Yes, context is important. But there's still no justification for a man hitting a woman.

@@MrKeefy1967well I think that's a cultural issue not a personal one at that point. Yeah, you can argue 60s logic is messed up but times change and judging a man by ethics that are 50 years in the future seems silly to me. Besides, that no reason to hit a woman isn't always true. Granted those examples are extreme but that doctrine in those situations have caused serious problems.
@MrKeefy1967 Жыл бұрын
@@ibysdagon4659 Sure but the OP is seeming to justify it or excuse it today in 2023, and from his explanation it's nowhere near one of those very 'extreme' examples you're referring to. According to Burr's account 'you give them a slap from time to time' sounds like recurring behaviour and not an isolated incident. I've nothing against Sean Connery btw and it was a different time - but don't try and justify that type of behaviour today which is what I believe the OP was doing.
@ibysdagon4659 Жыл бұрын
@@MrKeefy1967 I got the opposite. I mean people legit take stuff done 50 or more years ago an use it to attack that person for clout. I disagree it's only men but it seemed to me that's what he's bringing up. I mean I almost never hear about bad stuff about Walt Disney and oh boy that can of worms. But people like the company. Which I think is the real problem. Dead people and stuff your not using are easy targets.

I was a great fan of George Carlin, because I discovered early on that comedians without filters are the best comedians. I discovered Bill several years ago and he has filled the fliterless comedian shaped hole that George left in my soul when he passed away. Comedians run the gambit, from mediocre to great...but a few break that sound barrier to prove themselves not only funny but insightful, with a verbosity that just makes their observations absolutely brilliant. Now there are others I enjoy but George and Bill...God I love these guys!

This is what comedy is supposed to do, it covers very delicate subjects and puts them either in a different light or allows people a new way to talk about it. Not to be serious but, since most people haven't read the 1976 interview, Bill is actually exaggerating Connery statement. He basically said he didn't think there was anything wrong with an open-handed slap if a couple were fighting and it got physical between them. He continued that it wasn't okay for a man to hit a woman the same way he might hit another man. Definitely NOT okay but also not the same thing Bill was joking about.

I remember having a conversation with my grandmother (born 1921) about 10-12 years ago. Somehow the topic of men hitting their wives came up. I told her that most men my age (born 1970) and younger consider men who do that to be cowards. She was genuinely surprised. (As far as I know, my grandfather never hit her, or at least never severely.) Some people need to learn or be reminded of how much and how quickly society changed in the last 50-60 years. There are some people now calling for the new James Webb Space Telescope to be renamed. James Webb (1906-1992) was a career bureaucrat, and the most important job he held was the head of NASA in the '60s when the U.S. was working toward landing on the Moon. Previously, he held other jobs in the federal government in the late '40s and early '50s, when it was official policy that all homosexuals be fired from government jobs. Someone asked me what it was that James Webb did that people are upset about. I replied that Webb committed the "crime" of not building a time machine, travelling into the future to learn that mistreating gay people is wrong, returning to his job in his own time, and then single-handedly thwarting the anti-gay policy approved by Presidents Truman and Eisenhower.

Sean Connery made those comments to Playboy magazine in November 1965. He was born in 1930. Later throughout his life, he's said those comments he made were not right. Logically, we all know (or, *should* know) that a man born in 1930 is going to have a completely different way of thinking, versus someone born twenty years ago. Things we all do today and think nothing of it...there will be people 100 years from now, negatively judging us on those things that today, we all believe to be "normal", and socially acceptable.

Harry W2S no filter reactions come to mind, only way you get cancelled imo is if you get arrested obviously or you let them cancel you, if you have $ you can just keep coming back, if you hide & apologize & acknowledge it you’ve lost. In 1987 Sean Connery did an interview with Barbara Walters in which he said he did not like playing golf with women and that women who keep nagging and confronting warranted a slap to end the encounter. They referred to his having advocated for slapping a woman at some point in the past (prior to 1987). Sean Connery pretty much embodied the man of the era prior to women's lib. 1987 was prior to the equal rights amendment as well. Women were, and still are thought of as inferior to men. It becomes obvious as they are paid less and taken advantage of--just try taking your car in to the mechanic; you'll get ripped off virtually every visit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZqZmmV3eLeBbaM
