Born in the 80s, and my second grade teacher had a paddle on the wall next to the bathroom pass. We were informed that if someone misbehaved, student and paddle would travel to the principal's office. There was NO misbehavior. In fact, our class served as punishment for one unruly third or fourth grader who was booted down to our room for the day for committing an infraction severe enough for him to be told that second graders were better behaved. He never looked at us, but kept his head down and his pencil busy. He was restored to his own grade after lunch, hypothetically having been properly chastened.

The whole Griner thing makes me think of that American kid in the 90s(I think) that got arrested in Singapore and sentenced to a canning for littering or something stupid like that. I was young but I remember the media going crazy. People protested and celebrities were calling on the president to “save” him from such a overly harsh punishment. He commited a crime he admitted he knew was a crime and ended up getting the punishment that was the norm in that country. Sure she was probably sentenced more harshly because she was American but she still did something she knew was illegal and got caught. She was incredibly foolish and has to do the time now. It annoys me that it’s become such a big story in the media like we are entitled to just ignore the laws and courts of other countries.

@@travr6 actually there are numerous situations in which you are permitted to hit adults, even women, but again there is a clear distinction between what is physical abuse and what is not. Many children require no physical discipline whatsoever. For some it is much more effective and far less traumatizing to be spanked than to be be verbally disciplined. And there are many parents unskilled in both.

I’m an RN. Serious injuries and DEATHS have occurred. Corporal punishment is dangerous. I never hit my sons. My youngest gave us a pretty rough time when he was a kid. Punishments were creative, to say the least. Both our sons are well-adjusted, peaceful adults. My siblings never struck their kids. I was spanked once, and my mom was horrified she caused us pain. She never did it again. And by the way. I’m 63. I went to schools that paddled kids. It accomplishes NOTHING. Of course there are exceptions, where diehards believe it helped them. But the truth remains. Show violence to your child, and you teach them fear and worse. Punish with time-outs, taking away favors, etc work well without hitting. (Like the time we took away PlayStation for weeks and I kept it in the trunk of my car. Our son thought we were joking. We were not. He eventually learned. And we didn’t hit him. Ever!)
@TheJohmac
@TheJohmac Жыл бұрын
@@drieuxkoeppel8152 So you prefer using psychological pain to physical pain. Both have the potential for great harm. I work in mental health, I see every day the results of psychological abuse. And I would argue that the negative impact of psychological abuse is far more DEADLY and long term than corporal punishment. The exceptions do not disprove the rule. Your anecdotal evidence is uncompelling. This is why I don't point to myself or my siblings who were spanked as evidence of it's effectiveness. Yes there are those who respond better to verbal methods of discipline; however, applying a generalized approach to parenting is foolish. I would argue that there numerous factors to be considered when attempting to correct poor behaviors in children. Personality traits, temperament, interests, etc. are all important considerations. But condemning a practice that has been used with relative utility for centuries would require far better outcomes than those that have been realized over the last few decades when corporal punishment has become taboo. Although, the lack of corporal punishment is not the sole reason for the steep decline in social grace and responsible behavior displayed in today's young people. I also don't think it is as steep as some might claim, but there are certainly other factors that effect the sharp rise in mental health crisis facing our western culture. The general departure from traditional western values has played a major role as well. From fatherless homes and the rejection of family values, to subjective rather than objective educational strategies, to toxicity in movies, games, and social media, and even yellow journalism. Values like discipline, truth, humility and modesty have been mostly abandoned from a cultural perspective. Nevertheless, I have seen no compelling evidence that the tools being used to teach and develop children today are in any way superior to those of the past, in fact it is quite demonstrable the precise opposite is the case.

@beesley99 Corporal punishment in schools is virtually non-existent in the US, and hasn't been a thing for probably 40yrs. I think the last to hold on to that was Catholic schools. Because it faded away slowly the laws regarding the subject were never repealed/amended. Sometimes the American public are self-governing in certain things like that. Parents spanking their kids isn't as prevalent as it used to be either. It's grey-area now though, because it's not illegal, but if you're smackin your kids in public you might get Child Protective Services called on you and they investigate every call.

I don't personally have any children but I've seen this happen with friends and family so many times.

I think the problem with spanking that many people have is that it is sometimes used where a lesser punishment would suffice. Some parents use spanking as the go-to punishment which, ironically, reduces its effectiveness. This is where it crosses the line into abuse. It should be used as a last resort when lesser punishments fail. Because sometimes, you just have to get a little pain to stop a behavior before it gets out of control. There has to be a balance, learned in the home, or the world will provide that pain without the parent's love. I was only spanked about 5 times growing up, and it was 1 hit with the belt each time. But, knowing it was coming, and hearing my dad snapping the folded belt loop was even scarier than the spanking itself. As an adult, I can say without doubt that I deserved each spanking, and they changed my behavior. Most often, my punishments were being sent to my room where I was not allowed to play, or read, or do anything but think about what I did. After an hour or so, they would come into my room and we would talk. They would ask questions like, 'What did you do?', 'What could have happened?', 'Who could have gotten hurt?', 'Why did you do it?'. It made me think things through better and gave me a bigger picture of the consequences of my actions.

My brothers and I knew kids who seemed to be spanked nearly every day, and then others who were simply always on restriction. We had our moments when we very richly deserved it, mainly owing to our willful behavior. However I would say that we were not spanked more than a handful of times per year, and as we aged, the infractions incurring such results were greater, such as either failing to complete schoolwork, cheating on schoolwork, or engaging in blatant rebellion.

I grew up in the 70's and got spanked a few times a year. I think it's a good thing from responsible parents as it completes a punishment and things can get back to normal quickly vs. grounding someone for a week and keeping a kid's "it's not fair" defense going for 7 days. I think, like so many things in society regarding parent's rights to raise their children, we assume all parents are irresponsible to avoid the 1% from being abusive. It's like making alcohol laws so restrictive that one beer is illegal thinking that will protect us from alcoholics on the road. As a result, neglecting to discipline becomes a bigger problem, especially for overworked single moms that don't have the energy to keep fighting over enforcing longer term punishments up on kids that are still rebelling over rules. Fear of punishment is more effective than being sent to their room to watch tv and their phone and complain about their unjust parents to their friends.

That may have played a part, but I think the real reason was because Russia wanted to trade her for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer known as the "Merchant of Death," who is serving a 25-year sentence in the US after being convicted of conspiracy to kill US citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

My parents were very fair when it came to corporal punishment. I always thought about the punishment I’ll get before doing things and sometimes I was willing to bet on it. Never worked out lol. In hindsight to this day I always think about the punishment I’ll receive before doing something stupid. I’m glad my parents taught me those lessons early. The simple fact is that I would rather receive punishment from my parents early than later by the law…..

Honestly, for anybody traveling outside your country, research the laws of where you are traveling to and follow them to a T, and I would suggest to be more restrictive to be on the safe side. Ignorance is not a defense. Choosing to be oblivious and ignore is on your responsibility and you will get whatever punishment THEY decide. Feeling of entitlement is not a defense and will get you nowhere outside the US.

@@jasonmistretta4295 My sixth grade teacher had a paddle hanging on the wall, but it was never used. But, I do remember him throwing two boys out of the classroom. (literally) but this was years ago. I went to school in the 70's and 80's. If you were disruptive in class you were sent to the Principal's office, your parents were called to come and take you home! Before you could come back to school, you and your parents had to meet with the Principal and the teacher. No corporal punishment! And most kids didn't try to be a wise guy, back when they actually taught you something! I was very fortunate, I got a great education!

I got paddled at school in the 3rd grade back in the early '90s. It was the principal though and not the teacher. Normal protocol was warnings and supposed to inform parents prior to punishment. My mom did go to the school and threw a huge fit because they didn't gain her permission first. I was also spanked at home as well. There is a fine line when it comes to spanking. It's never ok to just smack and hit your kids all over their body out of anger... But a firm spanking on the bottom when the child is out of line is a legit form of punishment when nothing else works. I learned from a young age what was acceptable behavior. I learned to respect (not fear) my parents, teachers, babysitters, and other adults in my community.

My opinion on mullet history (without looking into it): The hippie movement of the late 60s normalized long hair (on males) in the culture, but eventually businesses / corporations did not want guys to have long hair working in the office, so their bosses likely told them to cut their hair. The 'rockers' cut their hair, sure, but just in the front. 😉 Thus left it long in the back for a compromise. It's is not a style that just came up because guys genuinely thought it looked great. I grew my hair long in the 90s as I listened to rock music, played bass and guitar as well, but I never cared for the mullet style. To each their own though. 😁

My dad was incredibly abusive. He beat us until welts bled and skin turned black. My mom took us five kids and left, and she told us that the spankings we'd received were not spankings but rather beatings. She did spank us a few times after she left but when she did, I almost laughed because compared to the beatings I was used to it felt like nothing. She eventually used grounding and privilege removal more than anything else and that was really effective against us. As a mom now I have rarely if ever spanked my kids and utilize privilege removal more than anything else. One example of the rare spanking that my kid ever got was when he kept throwing a tantrum every single day at school and refusing to do work. He was making the teachers really miserable. I'd grounded him, removed privileges, and made him stand in the corner and none of that worked. Finally, after a particularly bad day I busted his butt, and he stopped what he was doing. One other example was him screaming and throwing a tantrum in the store. He'd been trying to throw tantrums in the store to get things he wanted. So I just left the store and all my items and busted his butt at home. He never did it again. My rule of the thumb when it comes to spanking which my mom taught me is never spank when you're angry and never leave a bruise. It should be about teaching a child not getting revenge.

If someone has a mullet in the U.S. it's usually worn ironically to be funny... usually. Also a "spank" is supposed to be a swat on the behind using your hand, not hitting a child anywhere else (which becomes child-abuse). Many Americans also believe that hitting a child with a belt is child-abuse! Also, I personally don't know anyone who was ever spanked by a teacher

While corperal punishment is legal for schools in some states, that does not mean it is common. Furthermore, although a state may permit it, not every county in the state allows it, and even in counties that allow it, it's pretty rare in public schools because there is alot of paper work involved, and there is always the risk of a lawsuit. As it has been mentioned many times, America is a very letigus country, and there are plenty of people out there looking to score easy money. Schools fear a parent allowing there child to be paddled, and then immediately taking that child to a doctor to declare that an injury that resulted crossed the line regarding what is permitted, and then getting a lawyer to sue the school district. The closest thing I have ever seen like to corperal punishment, was in the first of Florida two high schools I attended. They had Saturday work detail, where anyone who got written up had to clean the stadium, and parking lot the morning after a football game. The second high school I went to only had Saturday detention, which ment you had to spend your Saturday sitting in the cafeteria, doing nothing.

The last news on Britney Griner I heard, she'd lost the appeal, but will get credit for "time served", so with the 9 year sentence, she's got about 8 years left to serve. As for possibly being framed, she has admitted to bringing it. She has made the preposterous claim that she was "packing in a rush" and simply "forgot" it was in there. Well, not only is it illegal in Russia, it's also illegal at the federal level in the US. To board a flight ANYWHERE, you go through TSA, which is federal. You cannot legally fly with it in the US, either. Even a flight within a state where it's legal, because once through the gates, you're basically in federal territory. So, unless her last trips were road trips, there's no way it was "accidentally" left in the bags. I do think the sentence is absurd, but I don't know what the guidelines in Russia are. Maybe it's an extreme sentence for political reasons, maybe it's in line with Russian law. I don't know. I'm also not going to Russia, so I don't have to know. Bottom line, she brought this on herself, but she may be in deeper than otherwise because of "timing".

We briefly lived in TX in the 80s when I was a kid... I didn't get into trouble, but trust me when I say that if any teacher had tried to paddle me, I would have beaten them bloody... not kidding at all, and I'm a good Boy Scout. It's just that I don't have to play along with insanity... you try to assault me, you WILL be bloodied. I say that with kindness and love... but as a warning. :D Some rando evangelical school teacher trying to teach their own personal morality in class... simply does not get to touch you, even when you challenge the very basis of their self. There are lines in the sand, and when we lived down there it was so very odd as a 4th grader to be able to see how far that line was from reality... they actually thought that saying a dirty word was worth a paddling in some cases. They didn't realize how intrusive it was to regularly mention Jesus and God. They were all on crack... but seriously, this mild mannered Midwest kid would have really (no joke) put any random Texas adult into the hospital for DARING to think they could touch me. They are lucky none tried... one did grab me by the shoulder once, and the pure fire that came out of my eyes was enough to let that hick understand they had crossed into extremely dangerous territory by doing that. Don't spank your own kids... and if you dare try it on a random kid, expect to lose some teeth or your balls. :D

While spanking may be legal, most schools do not allow it because of possibility of lawsuits. Parents walk a thin line between forms of physical punishment & abuse/neglect. Punishment now frequently takes form of being grounded (not allowed to go out with friends or on dates), taking away electronic devices, phones, car keys, or desert rather than spanking. Using an object rather than hand to spank child or using a closed fist could result in being arrested & children taken away by child services. A lot of states allow medicinal marijuana, but recreational use is mixed. States restrict quantity you can possess & who can legally sell it. Large quantities are considered drug trafficking with intent to sell which results in arrest or if it was illegally brought into country. Unless it is illegal in a particular state or was in your possession in a federal or state building, few get prison sentences for simple possession. (Griner wasn't framed because she admitted drugs were hers, is well-known for her drug use, & knew Russian law but thought she could get away with it. She was sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison for possession & intent to traffic drugs, but was released about 9 months after her arrested when U.S. negotiated prisoner swap for U.S.-held Russian arms dealer known as "Merchant of Death," who is considered one of most dangerous men on earth. This resulted in a lot of anger over inequitable swap.)

And lots of states allow the use of deadly force to protect one's self or others from bodily harm by an aggressor. I would have no qualms whatsoever if a parent shot and killed a school official who brutalized a child like that. Schools have absolutely zero business in physically attacking children as a punishment for misbehavior. With parental consent, of course, is a totally different situation. But even then, that reflects very poorly on parental competence. What I wish were illegal everywhere is the right to bear children without having to go through an extensive course of child psychology.
