Still got my Grease soundtrack album... bugged my mom for ages until she let me get it... I was 7 when the movie came out and was instantly hooked by the music that was constantly on the radio. I remember showing her Cubby O'Brien on the liner notes as the studio drummer. He was in the Mickey Mouse Club back in the Annette Funicello days.

I was born in '70 so definitely grew up hearing a lot of these. Mom was into Barry Manilow, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, etc while dad was into everything from Joan Baez to Zeppelin, Rush and Judas Priest. I still have a very eclectic music collection, but very rarely listen to much from the last decade or so. Give me the classics any day of the week.

In the 70’s a lot of different artists and songs could be on the chart. It was the last decade that really happened. Towards the late 70’s and early 80’s it was certain types of music only getting into the top 40. Greedy record companies set it up that way.

Yes, back then the local radio DJ had more freedom to play what they wanted. Nowadays they have to follow a corporate playlist

@@bengilbert7655 yep, my local “classic rock” station has a very strict playlist of about 150 songs. One dj plays the same songs or artists so often you can nearly set your watch by it. Example: the only Rush songs they play are Tom Sawyer, limelight, and occasionally free will. They’re literally forbidden to play any other Rush song. It’s terribly maddening to hear the same songs everyday.

How I feel about the seventies, too. They just played old crooners, early rock, funky 60s that spilled into the 70s, disco, soft rock, pop, early punk, hard rock, ballads, country, and the upcoming Prince of Rock himself about to take-over the 80s. The 70s was an incredibly well-rounded decade.

Gone were the days when say Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Carly Simon, James Taylor and many other very talented artists could share top 40 success with the pop acts of the day. Me, I listened to what was called album oriented radio, or A.O.R. also now called classic rock. But you had your Z104 type stations that were one strict formula that aimed at people 13 to about 25. A smaller, stricter playlist that you could nearly set your watch to. “Good morning it’s Z104, it’s 7:45 here’s Madonna.” They keep a very similar radio format today except that at 7:45 they play Taylor Swift.

I was born in 1966, so these are the songs I grew up with. There was only 1 I didn't know. Growing up we listened to a lot of our parents 45's (that would be vinyl for you youngsters) from the 50's and 60's, so I might know some of them.

Andy Gibb was one of 4 brothers that founded the Bee Gees. Andy didn't continue on with the band, and had a pretty successful solo career. Only 1 Gibb brothers is still alive, and that's Barry. Who was the lead vocalist in their biggest hit "Staying Alive"

I've heard of 90% of these songs but the reason why is because if a song was at the top of the charts more often than not you would here it playing somewhere.

I do enjoy these music compilations from different decades, I always hear songs I like but kinda forgot about. I wish they would play a tiny bit more of each song though. I know they’re including a lot of songs and don’t want the video to be 3 hours long but I think maybe 4 more seconds would make it easier to get the feel of each song.

I was lucky to grow up in the 60s, 70, 80s and 90s in Los Angeles and together with the music had all the legendary DJs; The Real Don Steel, Charlie Tuna, Wolfman Jack (and the legendary sports announcers too; Chick Hern, Bob Miller, Dick Enberg and Vin Scully). I was so lucky. The music was timeless; Folk (Singer-Songwriter), Pop, Rock, Heavy, Country, Motown and the British Invasion. I was so lucky!!!

OMG can't believe you guys don't know the Carpenters! You MUST listen to their songs--even if you don't react to them. Brother and sister group from So Cal. No one had a voice like hers and he was a genius at not only writing songs, but if he did someone else's songs, he took mediocre music and made it his own. They were MASSIVE, but the music industry disliked them because, as it was moving towards heavier rock, their image was squeaky clean and bucked the trend for the most part

This is my first decade alive (70-80) and I remember these songs by heart (except for Bony M, no idea who they were). They played everywhere: radio, movies, American Bandstand, Soul Train, Solid Gold, Dance Fever, home stereo, 8-tracks, Muzak stations for businesses, music videos, replays and reruns. A lot of people grooved to the walking dance beats of Disco music or the mellow vibes of Easy Listening, back then. I still know how to do the Hustle. 😁

You guys were born in 99? God... Way to make me feel old. I was 11 in 99. That summer, I had the time of my life out in Washington state. I went with my mom to see my brothers. We went to the Pacific ocean, Puget sound, Mount Rainier, camping out in the woods, and just had a good ol time. My fondest memory is having a snowball fight on Mount Rainier in August. Le Freak had an interesting origin. These guys (Niles Rodgers?) were not allowed into let's say the famous disco Tech studio 54 dance club. They went back to their recording studio upset and made the groove swearing F off. Then they changed the lyrics to Freak out.

Love when you said “the is very British” to “Mull of Kintyre” by wings (aka Paul McCartney) and the song references his country home in Scotland. Believe it or not at the time it was the best selling single of all-time in the UK (ironically knocking his own Beatles song from the mantle). A few have sold more since but it’s Top 10 for sure (and it literally flipped in the US and radio stations played the B-side rocket instead).

1976 through 1979 disco music was huge. Young people hear these old songs and don't get them. Back then AM radio was big and FM stereo radio was a future thing. In AM top 40 music they played the same songs multiple time a day, sometimes an hour. The music and songs literally got beat into your brains. So for old people who lived it, these songs are a part of their lives and experience. The same goes for late 50s and 60s music. Some of the best music ever.

Go check out that Convoy song on its own. It's a comedy story song by CW McCall that tells the tale of us truckers from the 70s fighting back against taxation and the national 55mph speed limit. It's a good laugh, as is his other popular hit "Wolf Creek Pass". Wolf Creek Pass is about two steering wheel holders hauling chickens across the Continental Divide in Colorado and the hilarity that ensues when they get in over their heads with the mountain. You'll love it.

🙌💯 Absolutely! The Bee Gees (and Andy Gibb) were a mainstay of 1970’s music. As soon as they hit the Saturday Night Fever era, James & Millie recognized and seemed to like every one of their songs. But they’re missing out on the earlier songs that were also huge in the US. I’d love to see them react to a “Top 10 Bee Gees Songs” or “Top 20 Songs by the Gibb Brothers” type compilation ❤️💐

The song Grease was written for the movie Grease, but was not in the Broadway musical Grease, but I think is included in most stage versions of Grease now. Other songs fro the movie that had chart successes were Hopelessly Devoted to you (quite a big hit) and to a lesser degree, Summer Night, and Greased Lighting. Sandy was a chart hit in The UK but BL not in the US.
