My late cousin Henry was a Green Beret medical sergeant. He transferred to the US Air Force when they offered to send him to medical school and the officer commission that’s comes with being a MD in the military He graduated medical school and served as a USAF doctor until retirement. After retiring from the Air Force he went to work as an emergency room doctor in the Atlanta area until his death from cancer in 2010. We miss you Henry

The Green Berets were formed in 1953. One of their roles was to train and arm local resistance groups, so they have to learn several languages. They sorta act like military anthropologists, listening and taking the time to learn the local customs and gaining the peoples trust and respect. Their Latin motto translates as "To Liberate from Oppression".

”Green Beret” is U.S. Army Special Forces. They are highly trained in guerrilla & unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, direct action, counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, special reconnaissance, information operations, counterproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, security force assistance, hostage rescue, & combat search & rescue. (They wear a green beret as part of their uniform. Different military branches have their special forces & some also wear berets in different colors.)

True, but "Special Forces" as a term, in the US anyway, is reserved for US Army SF. Other branches have Special Operations Forces (SOF). This also can include support functions like intel, comms, logistics, aviation.

The thing that can separate soldiers from other people with guns is that a soldier has no doubts about when he will fire. You can see it in their eyes. It is an important distinction. And if you DON'T know when you would fire without hesitation, maybe you shouldn't have a gun. I observed this when watching old service men and younger non-service men in law enforcement and other confrontations. The look on their faces and their focus is very different.

green berets are one of a kind in the way they fight. they can literally have nothing and still win when outnumbered. they specialize in both water and land and are able to pilot most any type of vehicle. their signature weapon is actually the E tool a miniature shovel and multitool. its real purpose was to dig holes but in emergencies its a sword and it works. they also must be familiar with most if not all weapon systems with some unconventional newer weapons. they are all rounders with experience to match.

I'm not sure why or how, but the SF guys were always the most humble and kind dudes I ever met. It's not uncommon if you were struggling with something or even if your uniform wasnt quite squared away for one to walk up to you and help you out. At FT Lewis we do an airfield run all the way around about 5 miles. Anytime a squad of them was passing me "obviously " they always patted me on the back and encouraged me to pick up my pace.

If parachute jumps gives you the willies. Try watching HALO jumps. High Altitude Low Open.. You pretty much free fall from around 30 to 40 thousands feet, and don't deploy until around 800 feet. The whole time between is free fall. There is also HAHO jumps. Where you jump from the same height but deploy around 15 seconds after the jump. The soldier can literally float for up to 20 minutes and travel up to 30 miles, depending on conditions. Gives the soldier alot of time to assess live choices, but mostly to concentrate on the mission. Both jumps are strategic for stealth.

One of the original terms for the Green Berets was a "Force Multiplier". One man or a small team teaching and training the local people on how to shoot, strategize, and work together to fight the enemy. A completely different approach to pretty much all other SF's unit in the different branches. As an ex Combat Controller, I have always appreciated the depth of knowledge that the Green Beenies had. Not just warfare. Mrs. Beesley's reaction to just the jumping is exactly why not everyone either is made for these jobs or why they wipe out during the selection process. Talking about how soon you'd pull your chute when US military personnel are first trained to jump out of planes it's what I believe is called static line. The "handle" to pull the chute is attached the the plane so after falling a very short distance it automatically pulls the chute. What is seen in this video is from more advanced training.

so the reason why they aren't pulling there chutes right when they jump, is they are more the likely HALO jumping [High Altitude Low Opening] where they are jumping from 15,000 - 35,000 Feet (4,600 to 10,700 m) and free falling till they reach about 3,000 feet (910m) that way enemy radar does not detect them. 12 Strong is about one of the Groups of Green Berets that went into Afghanistan in 2001

Usually you jump at 35,000 ft, and you don't deploy chutes until 3,000 ft or so. You can do it as low as 800 ft in the right conditions, if your equipment load is light. You quite often jump at 35,000 ft, and deploy chutes a few seconds later, to travel greater distance, and because chutes opening at low altitude is pretty loud from the ground, it gives your position away.

Lol I’m with you! I could not pull the parachute I would be in such a panic. I couldn’t jump out of the plane even if it was crashing. I would ride it to the ground. I’ve told my husband many times that if we are ever in a plane crash situation where we have to jump that he’s going to have to throw me out of the plane and pray I’m able to not panic and not be throwing up so I can pull the parachute.

Uncle is a green beret, I always keep in mind when talking to him (even tho he’s not going to) IF he wanted to, he could kill me very quickly with just his bare hands. He won’t ever get into specifics & I don’t push but when he retires maybe I can get some non classified stories out of him. He fell off a ropes course a few years ago in training, fell 2-3 stories or more (can’t remember) & broke like half the bones in his legs knees down, spent almost a year recovering, then requalified for his team & was back in, these guys are animals & help a lotta ppl & my names not really scotthill so not like I’m giving away any info

That is what makes them Special Forces, only 3 out every 100 who are selected to attempt the training make it. Not just 100 rando's, but 100 who they think have the potential to pass... I had a few years, when dad was the First Sergeant for the Best Tactical Airlift Squadron in the world (37th TAS), to hang around and talk to Air Force Combat Controllers on a regular basis. By that I would occasionally meet Special Forces of almost every NATO nation. Most of these men, if you met them on the street, you would have no clue they were Special Forces. But, they taught me soooooo much as a young teen about the world, what to look for, how to be "aware" of everything and everybody around you without looking like you are paralyzed with fear. Sadly, I was not cut from the mold these men were and I found my way to becoming a Marine... That is a long story... Check out "General Discharge" video's on U.S. Air Force Special Forces, these guys are truly a special breed, as well...

The thing that I don't think Millie gets, is that with the free fall jumps, they are all trained and certifide for it. But to get that training they must be a qualified parachutist with a minimum of 12 static line jumps from ( C130, C141, C27J, C-17, or C-5 only), they must have a jump status of 12 months and with an Airborne physical that is current with in 5 years, all this is just to attend the Army free fall School. It bothered her with them umping from the hilo into the water. Yet Millie did not bat an eye or question the fast-roping, where you are NOT fastened to the rope your only points of contact are your hands and feet. Just goes to show you funny human nature is. By the way great video. Now you need to do the Night Stalkers, these are the pilots that get these men to their AO,

Two things. First the training is the only thing you think about after exiting the aircraft because it has been engrained in you that it is what is going to save your life. Second the first through the door is the safest. That's when the surprise is up and reaction time hasn't allowed you to be hit everyone else is worse off than the number 1 person.

Point man was "safe" in the early years of GWOT, then they started barricading with PKMs. That being said, the point man only has the surprise advantage before rounds start going off. Either way, CQB sucks with a very high chance of getting shot or killed.

The most depressing thing is that all this training is getting softer and softer year after year soon we will be the next Russia show up to war and look embarrassing with the weakest most coddled and pampered group of soldiers I completely get eliminating actual cruelty and hazing but it’s the military they shouldn’t have to change for you 😂 you signed the papers and got on the plane/bus what did you expect a spa and resort I just don’t get it at all
