Listening again, this must the very best version of 'Sweet Leilani' ever recorded. I've literally heard dozens of versions, but this soooo beautiful. Roy Smeck is playing a Rickenbacker electric steel guitar, but still uses loads of 'old' chords when an acoustic Hawaiian guitar didn't have yet the presence, the electric ones had. All selections are superb, but Sweet Leilani really stands out.

To me, Jewel Faye kind of sounds like an older Mary Lee. Thanks for uploading these treasures Peter!

Brilliant music, I love 'what will I tell my heart'. This music is perfect for just playing in the background while I'm pottering around the place tinkering with stuff and pretending to work.

Wouldn't the hotel/nightclub scene have been glamorously wonderful then? The war sufficiently remote at that moment.

This is sweet music - how great the 30s were. I don't think there's ever been a decade like it for musical evergreens. The Sixties were great too in a different way, but I don't think even that decade produced music which will last as long as those of the 30s.

I would also add that these are very good transfers. Can I ask what you use to decrackle those HMV's and Columbia disks. I always find it a difficult balance to reduce it without affecting the sound of the music.

Oh, Lovely Billy Bissett from Canada, married to Alice Mann, erstwhile singer with Jack Hylton. As a singer he's a bit challenged by the loping melody....; Jewel Faye singing with Jack Hylton had come back with Jack ("Jack's Back!") from the States with The Swingtette vocal group who waxed a half-dozen vocals with Hylton in England. Faye was the only solo singer drawn from the group. Trombone-solo most likely by Woolf Philips, arrangement sounds like a Melle Weersma effort, a Dutch arranger - band leader who gave up his Dutch band to arrangem with Hylton. After his sojourn in England he went to Argentina where he wrote Penny Serenade, a massive world-wide hit (even recorded in Nazi Germany). Roy Fox's swingy recording features Art Christmas on baritone sax after the vocal

I agree completely- and not just dance bands and popular music- but film, exploration, science, literature, theatre- so much, despite the depression, the Spanish Civil war and other skirmishes in India, Ethiopia, etc., the rise of the Nazis and the gathering world war clouds- a remarkable decade, and my favourite though I was born in the 40's.

I have a version of " What Would I Tell My Heart" posted on my channel by Dolly Dawn. I prefer it over this version. He makes it kind of comical but Dolly makes it emotional, which I thinks fits much better.

My ex-wife led a Hawaiian dance group and this was their signature tune, so I'm particularly attached to it. I've heard lots of different versions, but this is quite probably my favourite. And I love Sam Browne. Bowlly was great, but limited, because he had hardly more than an octave. Sam could literally sing everything. The whole selection is beautiful, showing how superb British bands were at the time.

A long-belated reply, Peter. But as per your comments about Al Bowlly and Same Browne. Both were truly excellent but, in my view, Al Bowlly was the greatest of all the band singers of the 30s, probably of all time.
