The Simpsons is one of the longest running TV shows in the world, and over the course of its existence there has been no shortage of medical scenes. They range from funny to the downright bizarre - and in this week's video Sanchit and Varun react to the funniest medical scenes they can find!
Who are we?
Sanchit is a Psychiatry trainee and Varun is a Radiology trainee, based in Manchester. We post videos once a week and through our videos we hope to give you an insight into the world of medicine, working as Doctors and anything we find interesting in between.

Didn't Type 1 Diabetes used to be referred to as Juvenile Diabetes? If that's the case, though the name sounds odd, his age shouldn't matter. Any one of Mr. Burns' myriad of diseases could've caused him to stop producing insulin. Why am I reading so much into this? 🤣

For a time I lived in Bergen. I once visited a friend of mine at the maternity ward at the hospital there. I asked something to the effect of" Why are the curtains closed, let's open them up, it's a beautiful evening. (I then learned that she had recently developed a slight sensativity to light, and didn't want the sun straight in her eyes, as such the curtains were closed) I then looked out on a huge cemetary. One of the bigger ones in Bergen, I believe... My only thought was I hope terminal patients don't have this as their view. Might be a tad bit depressing.

In germany we had the case of a fake Doctor as well. His name is Gerd Postel. He was a mailman and one day in 1980 he red an article about a hospital looking for a doctor. He went to the hospital and said "Here i am...btw i have so many degrees i cant take them with me" (meaning not word for word). He worked on many posts and fields of expertise and worked himself up to one of the most famous court psycholoists. But in 1997 when he tried to fake his professorship, he was arrested and sentensed to jail. After his release, many TV companies did interviews with him. In one shocking, he said "Im a convicted criminal, a fraud. A proven ""not knowing what i was doing"" ... i did psychological exams in court. My diagnosises convicted people.... they proved all of this ... however, and you can look it up, NOT ONE of my exams was collected"

That's worse than what happened in Canada... a pediatrician somehow was able to get a job at a coroner's office. While he might have been an okay Dr. in his medical field... but when it came to actually determining how infants and children died... he was worse than incompetent. Many of the wounds he noted in his reports were caused by him during his examinations of their bodies. With that information, courts were able to secure conviction of over 15 parents for child abuse/murder, some of whom took plea deals for reduced jail times. Oh, he eventually was caught when someone decided to appeal, got a new medical examiner to review the case and the body. Then all hell broke lose in the Coroner's Inquiry on how such a person was able to falsify so many records and send so many innocent people to prison without qualifications!

HA! I made a comment on one of your other video earlier! You mentioned the EXACT thing I referenced in this video! ASK the patient about where to draw blood from, don't assume it's like how you were taught. Told the nurse where, which was where ALL the others were drawn that week, and she decided to go against instruction. STRAIGHT through the vein as best as I could tell after my arm swelled to what felt like 3 times the size. 3rd time she got it, 2 inches from where she started, and right where I told her to take it. To alleviate swelling, they had to move the IV to my other arm.

Another hospital right next to a cemetary is Karolinska Sjukhuset in Solna in Sweden, and yes, one of the routes to get there also routes you past lots of signs pointing towards the crematorium. Always found it a bit amsuing that the first thing you saw (prior to the latest expansion) when you left the main entrance was a wondeful view over the carefully landscaped cemetary, the main busstop still has that view. (Same Karolinska as that cooperates with (and is located right next door to) Karolinska Institutet, and yes, that is the same graveyard that Alfred Nobel is buried at)

Also, I 've had patients tell me, "they always get blood out of such and such arm" and I check and don't feel or see anything but while I'm doing it I look over at the other arm and there is a vein or two as big as a finger. I was a chiropractic patient and actually ended up marrying a chiropractor. He passed away 20 years ago. My back went out initially when I was 25 or 26 years old. Bent down to pick up my purse by my feet in the car. Worst pain I've ever had and I've had four kids with natural childbirth. I was too afraid to go to the doctor didn't want to get a shot in my spine. Finally went to the chiropractor and got much relief! Over the years I've learned good chiropractors from Bad chiropractors. It's an art. When they find where you're out and they get the muscles around it to relax enough they can get what's called a good adjustment. You can literally feel yourself wedged and when they adjust it such relief is instantaneous. You go from being hunched over and unable to straighten to feeling wonderful. Sometimes when your body has been used to carrying yourself crooked for a while it keeps trying to go back to the old position so you have to have it adjusted a few times till the muscles get used to carrying it in the right alignment. Then you just learn how to strengthen the muscles around it so you have less problems in the future. Hope that helps.
@ScanningTheMind
@ScanningTheMind 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight. The issue is a significant number of chiropractors claim and do all sorts of outright weird/dangerous stuff (like you mentioned in your other comment). If a medical Dr claimed or repetitively did something bizarre, without any evidence it worked, they’d be struck off by their governing body (atleast in the UK) - there doesn’t seem to be any such accountability for chiropractors. Drs need to practice evidence based medicine and that just doesn’t seem to occur with a lot of chiropractors. It’s a shame because you hear of a few people saying they were helped by some apparently good & ethical chiropractors. But until there is some sort of regulation, accountability and evidence based practice it’s hard to take the profession as a whole seriously.

@@ScanningTheMind, yes, you are right: medical doctors don't want to do dangerous things, it's obvious, it's just because of their careers. In the medical doctors we trust, no doubt about that.

She has veins that would make a student cry for joy because of how easy they are to find. no one has to dig for her veins, or for mine. And i have MS so i have to see my phlebotomist/doctor once a month for my infusion. nurses don't get enough credit, and phlebotomist are the 'red-headed step-child' joke. They are overlooked and not appreciated for the crap they have to go through either. YOU TWO DOCTORS! tell your nurses and phlebotomist in your respected hospitals those watching your videos love them and know they are not worth the crap they are given.

Yeah I’ve seen them too unfortunately. Problem is these people are allowed to market themselves aggressively (and completely falsely) with zero repercussions to themselves.

Actual smart chiropractors can help a lot. Genuine advice on what's causing issues or spinal discomfort, and advice/physical therapy on what kind of exercises and posture will help with it. If your chiropractor keeps going straight for the neck, chances are they're an amateur quack who relies on gimmicks to give the illusion of effectiveness. Case in point how Homer ignores the exercises given to him and is back to zero

These doctors seem kinda bad. A good chiropractor definitely knows what hes doing and can do miracles on the hardest places to fix.

@@ScanningTheMind Also if you have real problems they dont do anything to find out first they just start twisting you around after about a 4 minute talk. Its crazy and dangerous. No imaging, no getting medical records, no thorough physical exam. Every problem can just be fix by dangerously yanking on your spine.

Also there's different techniques. Some of them get weird with stuff like lift this arm up and if you know that arm can only go a little higher than your week over here and you know if you swing a dead cat over your head you might get warts I don't know. Weird s***. Ignore those chiropractors. Wait until you're upper back is out or your lower back is out and give it a try once or twice. I would always go to my husband's associate who was wonderful at adjusting necks. There's good and bad just like medical doctors.

You would actually need to know about kidney function BEFORE you administer contrast to someone as old as Mr Burns. Poor kidney function is a contraindication for contrast administration.

You guys have ZERO idea about American medicine. You mentioned about people not doing PT exercises and complaining that the DID. Um, some of us were born with congenital deformities(like my Clubfoot) that prevent us from doing said “at home exercises”.
