As an Englishman, I think I'm most proud of the varied and colourful language employed by my countrymen to describe their fellow road users, never a dull moment. Jokes aside tho, the highway code is a useful handbook with all the rules of the road but it's not exactly a page-turner, the British police are mostly forgiving if you aren't being dangerous and you won't get fines for every little mistake you make. the most important thing is to take your time, the worst that will happen is someone will get impatient and honk at you, at whish point you can tell them to piss off and everyone can get on with their lives.

The bit with the narrow road, both drivers were going too fast and so both were at fault. Where I live (West Wales) we have a lot of single track roads, but there are regular passing points, people generally take their time and if you meet in between one vehicle has to reverse. Everyone is pretty laid back about it. If you find yourself on a narrow road just take it slowly.

@@Belfastchild1974 That's the National Speed Limit. The main reason single-track country lanes would have a speed limit of 60 mph is because otherwise they'd have to put repeater signs up telling you the speed limit every so often. Don't let this dissuade you Ethan, it's not all like this. Golden rule at roundabouts is "give way to the right", if there's something coming you stop, they have right of way. If nothings coming, commence onto the roundabout. Zigzag lines on the road mean no stopping, they are normally either side of a pedestrian crossing, traffic lights or a school zone.
@caerphoto

The zigzag lines are to indicate the approach to a pedestrian crossing, and you're not allowed to park or overtake on them.

almost correct. You can't overtake the vehicle nearest the crossing. You can overtake after the crossing if there is space to do so, even though you're still on the zig zag lines, so don't be surprised when a motorcyclist passes you as soon as you're past the crossing itself.

A number of points here: Lots of idiots in these clips, and I don't just mean the "obvious". Many of the cars recording these errors were in the wrong themselves. Seeing someone pull out stupidly, many had plenty of time to react, but just drove at full speed then hit the brakes / horn either because they wanted to make a point, or they weren't concentrating. The "painted" roundabout is called a mini-roundabout - it's treated exactly like a normal roundabout, but big vehicles that can't make the turn can drive over them (in other words, they are used in roads which are too small for a normal roundabout.) As such, that guy who tooted his horn when he was crossing the rounfabout was actuall HIMSELF in the wrong, not the other guy.. He just crossed over the roundabout without slowing down, instead of going around it. The guy he honked at was not doing anything wrong. For those that say "but he didn't give way to the right", you're wrong. He did. Think about it: the 2 cars enter the junction opposite each other.. The guy who honked his horn was no more "the car on the right" than the other one was. They both entered the roundabout at the same time, opposite each other... He only thinks he was in the right because he thought it was ok to cut across the roundabout island like that. Now, what if, for example, the other guy had been turning to his right and also crossed over the roundabout? Then they'd have collided and both been at fault. The worrying thing about these videos is not so much the mistakes, but the people who don't even realise that THEY are often just as much at fault, sometimes more so -- that shows arrogance and ignorance as opposed to a silly mistake. The bit you didn't understand, you thought sounds like "pioneer" or "pirater" - he actually said "what the f*** you f**ing playing at, Jaysus!" The car that was hit and spun out? That wasn't in the UK - the cars were driving on the right hand side of the road for one!

The main thing to remember when you're here is just give way to the right at pretty much every junction or roundabout. A lot of the incidents here are people not paying attention to their right hand side and pulling out in front of people. I will say though that often with these cam videos the people recording are also driving badly. People often seem to think that because they have right of way they don't have to pay attention or drive defensively.

There are lots of single lane roads all through the UK - they will generally have an area somewhere where there is a little bit of a layby for cars to pass
@bluecheese1066
@bluecheese1066 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like those single lane roads will be the biggest source of anxiety for American visitors. As you say, they generally have small passing points every few hundred metres or so. Usually, if everyone is playing nice, the driver nearest a passing point will reverse to it and allow you to edge by. If somebody flashes their lights at you in this situation, they are saying, "I'll pull in to a safe spot, you continue by". It's a nice courtesy to do so. Most people will thank you as they pass so you may wish to wind your window down to thank each other, or at least raise your hand in acknowledgement. If they do not thank you, that is when it's perfectly acceptable to mutter, "grumpy git", under your breath. :) The important thing is not to get flustered and to take your time if you need to. I honestly think, aside from what this video shows, most British drivers are actually very courteous. If you're waiting to pull out of a junction, or to turn off a road, you'll often be flashed by oncoming traffic to signal that they're letting you out. This isn't required by law but the British (and Japanese) do seem to do it a lot and it's rather nice. Just be careful to check both directions of traffic when you pull out in this situation. Just because someone is kind enough to flash you to let you out, it does not mean it's necessarily safe to do so.
@MarabuToo
@MarabuToo 2 жыл бұрын
@Blue Cheese This courteous flashing you mention is a bit of a double-edged sword; while it's rare, there ARE insurance scammers giving you the right of way, then crashing into you and having some "impartial witnesses" on hand that tell how your ruthless driving style made an accident unavoidable.

There is likely an eight foot stone wall behind that grass. The really narrow roads in Cornwall and Wales were often for pack horses, not carts. About the tiny van, the driving licence is not an "any vehicle" deal. You need a different certification category on your licence to drive bigger vehicles (it is done by weight) and a lot of vans fall outside of the regular licence. The smaller vans count as a Station Wagon and can be driven with a normal licence, so there is a market for that size of vehicle.

What you thought was grass on either side of the country lane with the oncoming van were actually hedges. Many of them pre-date cars by centuries so the people that planted them can't be expected to have anticipated our modern needs. They do have passing places every so often though (I think the photo that showed the damage was taken in one) so if two vehicles meet one of them just has to reverse up to one of those to let the other one pass.

Drivers over here tend not to struggle with the larger roundabouts, which we have had for decades. Its the more recent `mini roundabouts` that a surprising number of drivers appear to have problems understanding, but exactly the same principle applies to all roundabouts. One must yield to any traffic coming from the right and on the roundabout. Confusion seems to arise when all entrances to the mini roundabout have traffic wishing to enter, ergo all must give way to trafffic from the right. I drive professionally, and when confronted with such a scenario think to myself, "well, we either all sit here all day looking at each other or someone makes a move. It is generally I who makes the move and get`s the traffic flowing again. Getting used to driving on `our` side of the road should be a piece of cake. I`ve been to a few cities around the world. One thing you might notice in being in an English city is the remarkable lack of the use of the car horn. Drivers generally follow the rules of the road, with the exception of obeying the command to stop at a red light. Cars are forever `jumping` red lights here. Out of the cities and towns you`ll find many minor roads that started as tracks for `os and cart. They are barely wide enough to manage one vehicle, let alone two. But many such roads are regularly used as short - cuts and by `in the know` delivery drivers. Only a fool would drive on such roads at speed and on a bend. Alas, we are not short of fools. The state of affairs prevailing over here are probably similar to those which prevail over there. In the city drivers tend to have less patience than when in the countryside. You are going to be under a lot of pressure if you chose to drive in one of our cities - especially since our cities are not based on a `grid system.` Even I get stressed driving in our cities.

What a lot of people in the UK forget about roundabouts, is the wording in the Highway Code about roundabouts. It is a given that you give way to traffic approaching from your right, but at a roundabout you give way to traffic on the roundabout. This is to take into account that there may be a slower vehicle joining the roundabout and you are just quicker than them. The dotted line going across the entrance to the roundabout, is in fact a traffic sign. It means give way (yield). Just because you are faster or coming from the right does not, necessarily, give you the right of way.

The narrow lane with tall grass are roads you see occasionally in the countryside. They are only built for one vehicle but have passing places every few 100 yards. You are meant to drive slowly on these then one person reverses into the passing place.

Also important to know that they're not just grass, often there are hedgerows hidden by the grass, or even stone walls, so you can't just drive into them thinking that the soft grass will do you no harm...it hides something potentially more deadly! I would say you see them more often than just occasionally though, especially down in the West Country. Even where I live, only 20 miles south of Central London, you will find them, although not as much as in more rural or remote areas.

The white circle painted on the road is a mini roundabout. Strictly speaking, to comply with the law you're supposed to follow the marked carriageway around it - and not drive straight across the painted spot to circumvent the roundabout, as the driver in the video did and then vented his spleen at the car entering the roundabout in self righteous indignation. Had he followed the marked carriageway, he might not have encountered the other vehicle entering. It was probably more of a case of 'six of one and half a dozen of the other.'

Take it steady & you'll be fine. Drive defensively - assume everybody around you is going to do something stupid. Avoid driving at night if you can. Indicate your intentions well ahead of time. I have driven in the US on numerous occasions & find that after the first ten minutes of intense concentration first thing in the morning my head 'switches' into driving on the right & then I can relax into it. Hopefully you will learn to relax in the same fashion - your on Holiday after all. The videos might be scary but these incidents are few & far between. I've been riding Motorcycles for 38 years & I'm still here. Been driving cars for 36 years & only been in one smash - totally wrote-off my beautiful completely original Series 5 manual BMW & still walked away. Hope you have a great time - & relax & enjoy it.

Re the not getting out of your car comment. I was once waiting to turn right out of a junction on to a busy road and it was taking a little while. The car behind kept tooting their horn with impatience. I got out of my car and went back and asked politely and with a smile if they (two young men) thought it was being helpful to toot, because in reality each time they did it I looked in my mirror which was in fact prolonging the wait. They looked very chastened and apologised, and when they were able to follow me out of the junction and then split away, gave another toot and a cheery wave, which I happily returned!

Driving on British roads is generally safe, people are human and everyone makes mistakes. Looking at these clips some of the people with dash cams also aren’t driving to the road conditions E.g. too fast or not slowing or being cautious of hazards. Having a dash cam doesn’t make a good driver.

I have never had to use the horn in 50 years of driving. You are extremely unlikely to experience bad driving like in the video during your trip. British drivers are in the main pretty good and polite. Some minor roads are narrow with high hedges - the issues with the video example were (a) the lane was too narrow for the commercial vehicle & it was travelling way too fast ( there are normally passing places on such lanes.). Peak caps are rarely seen - occasionally in the country - sometimes townies who try to be trendy - you will stick out like a sore thumb.

A lesson to be learned at 10:56. The rule at roundabouts is you should give way to the vehicle approaching from the right which the oncoming car failed to do. That is, in the Highway Code, a 'should' rule which means the failure to do so is not necessary an offence. It could though, be taken as an indication of carelessness in the event of a collision. However the dashcam driver, by failing to go round the white spot, did commit an offence, the Highway Code states "All vehicles pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so." All too often driving over the spot turns a minor inconvenience into a near miss or actual collision.

You are leaving a third world country and are coming to a first world country. You need to get a copy of the Highway Code to learn how to drive in England it tells you what the signs are, road markings etc. The zigzag lines means no parking on them or overtake the leading vehicle when approaching a Pelican (you have to press the button and wait for the green man) and Zebra (they have flashing lights) crossings, they also outside schools. It’s a hedge not grass it’s common on country roads there (Dorset and Devon have lots of these roads, there are other counties with similar roads but I can’t remember which ones) are passing places. Don’t drive over mini roundabouts as you will damage the underside of the car. I was a lollipop man for 14 months and I stopped most types of transport from bicycles to lorries.

The small van hit by the FexEx van was probably a Ford Transit Connect. You used to be able to get a lot of smaller vans (in fact my first car was a Ford Escort Van in the early 1990s) but you don't see them too much nowadays. Most of the issues on the video were people pulling out without looking, so as long as you keep your distance from the car in front you'll give yourself a bit more time to react. The roads here are a lot narrower and more congested than in the US, you might find it feels very claustrophobic to begin with. If you don't see any signs to the contrary assume the speed limit is 30mph, although you'll probably be using a SatNav/GPS and that'll tell you the speed limit for the road you're on.

The painted discs on road junctions are known as mini roundabouts. If there's traffic you treat them the same as the larger ones. Always give way to traffic coming from your right. My late husband who was a professional driver told me that you watched the car in front of you and kept an eye on the vehicle in front of them. The speed limit through built-up areas is 30, otherwise 40 and 70 on motorways. Some side roads have speed bumps and speed indicated is 20/

The narrow road - you often get these in very rural areas. They have lay-bys every quarter/third of a mile so that one vehicle has space to let another through. It operates on a sort of first come, first served basis, assuming that people will behave decently. The van was going far too fast for the conditions - the problem is that unless otherwise marked, the speed limit on this road would be 60mph. Couple that with far too many people interpreting that as it being ok in all conditions to hit the limit, and treating the limit as a target, and you get this.

The painted roundabouts are mini-roundabouts. Often put at junctions where there's a lot of traffic from one direction that prevents traffic from turning right, which as a result causes a jam behind the one waiting to turn right... So then inserting a roundabout makes sure the turning traffic gets a chance to turn which helps clear the road of traffic.

you will find the roads are narrower and you will also notice we drive on the left of the road, the main points to remember is speed, left side and round-a-bouts, we have invisible ones with round markings, we have small raised white discs and the larger ones, we stop at round-a-bouts and give way to the right, before actually driving your self take a few cab rides... or get in touch with a youtuber in the UK and get some lessons, but remember drivers and traffic in the cities is far different form the drivers in the country sides and open roads...
