George made it look easy, but he really worked hard. He said never went onstage and just “winged it”, he’d prepare like crazy. He said he’d do his jokes and routines out loud at home with a microphone and a small amplifier,pretending he was onstage, even if no one was home. It must’ve been absolutely hilarious if you lived next door to him and the windows were open and you could hear him.

I saw Carlin once in Topeka, Kansas. He'd tour the small venues with new routines to fine tune them for larger audiences, and often chose small venues with expectedly hostile crowds. If you can make a group of mostly religious people laugh at your comedic insights about religion, you had something going there. Dude was amazing. Humanity lost one of its finest minds when he passed.

George was a brilliant comedian with not just opinions but truthful insight about all facets of life. His very early albums, Class Clown, etc. were bend over laughing classics. He became more dark and critical of everything as he got older, yet he was right about most of his rants (teachings he claimed), albeit somewhat disconcerting since most of us were there to have a good time laughing and not feeling guilty about our personal beliefs in the subjects he brought up. He made us laugh, he inspired critical thinking in many of us, and that is what he wanted. He'll be forever missed.

Love this response. Covet means to want what somebody else had. My father is a Korean War vet and a devout Catholic. Which meant that as a kid I was too. One day the subject of the ten commandments came up and the whole "Thou shall not Kill" came to my mind. I asked my dad, you were in a war and in wars, don't people kill people. And isn't that against god's commandment. My father just told me... That's different. Its ok to do it then. Well, suffice to say. I am no longer religious because that made about as much sense as ramming your head up a horse's arse to go for a country ride.

What the killing means is pretty much “don’t murder” remember God commanded the Israelites to go to war multiple times. Basically, it’s just about a “justified” death. So if someone kills a murder do to the law (the death penalty) that’s different in God’s eyes then killing a woman just because you want to. God’s Just and He knows to get Justice you sometimes have to reshape the moral standards for yourself to get others morals on the right track.
@fluffylittlebear
@fluffylittlebear Жыл бұрын
@@codygates7418 Nah that's just one of the many errors/inconsistencies in the Bible. Murder and kill have different definitions. The commandment says "not kill," not "not murder." Meaning that according to the commandment, even killing in self defense is a sin. And of course, God sent his "chosen" people (fucking hate that word) to commit genocide, to slay every man, woman and child, and only spare young girls... Because he gave them permission to take their daughters as sex slaves. There's also that time he got mad at some people and sent bears to literally eat their children. Real story. That's in there. No point in starting a moral argument against the Bible though. Everybody already knows that it's vile.

George was basically a "standup philosopher" who had the uncanny ability to pinpoint absurdities and acts of gaslighting, found in American society. The way he can combine "laugh and learn" is unmatched even today, i wish he was still around just to see/hear his views on the last 10/12 years. And if you like storyteller comedians... i'm sure you know him, Billy Connolly is one of the finest storyteller comedians out there. If you have not really checked him out yet, give him a try :)

What makes Carlin so great is his comedy is based on real life situations. Another stand up comedian who was great was Alan King, also because he based his skits on real life; he would get sued by airlines & insurance companies because he spoke negatively about them, but what he had to say was the truth; the airlines & insurance companies did not like being spoken about negatively but King was speaking the truth about them & making it very funny. Thanks.

Knowing what we all know about Cosby now makes it harder, but the fact of it was he was revered by just about every comedian for his craft., and was on top of the comedy mountain for decades. many comedians say they never found Cosby funny, but appreciated his stage presence, command of an audience as he was the first to be a "sit down-stand up" and held audiences in the palm of his hand, and that he was the original master storyteller comedian.

I went to Catholic school for the majority of my life so the Ten Commandments were pretty much drilled into my head. I do agree with most of them, but to be honest, not all of them. And I don’t think that makes me a bad person or a bad Christian. As for this particular bit, I think George’s take on the Ten Commandments is really smart and really funny, much like most of his work, but I do disagree with a lot of what he said regarding the commandments (although, even though George was an atheist, since it’s a comedy routine it’s hard to tell if he actually has these opinions or if he’s just making jokes.)

@PeterDB90
@PeterDB90 Жыл бұрын
I love George Carlin's work and I get that this is comedy but... It's a common misconception that God initially gave the commandments written on stone tablets. If you actually READ the Bible, the first time the commandments were shouted down from the mountain to the entire nation of Israel by God himself (i.e. not given on tablets "when no one was around" as George put it). In fact, the story goes that by the time God got to the 10th commandment, the people of Israel cried out to Moses asking him to just relay to them whatever God tells him because they were too afraid to hear God's voice (understandably - the picture that was painted was that it was a grand and terrifying event, it wasn't a man having a conversation with them, it was a powerful being who they couldn't even see listing the commandments with a voice of thunder from a mountain that was completely on fire, per the Bible). I'm not mentioning this so that some asshat can come here and try to disprove that happening, I'm simply mentioning that according to the Bible, George Carlin's account of THEIR account of what happened is inaccurate. It wasn't handed out when no one was around - the entire nation of Israel heard it from the voice of God. George is also wrong about more people being killed in the name of God than for any other reason - religion makes up a small fraction of all the wars and murder in the world, it sure is taken as a fact because someone simply says it, but an estimate of deaths throughout history due to wars in general have been anywhere form 150 million to 1 billion. Most recent wars fought have been for non-religious reasons, including the 2 world wars, which DIRECTLY took the lives of around 70 million (if not more) people. Think about these numbers. Back during crusades and inquisitions, we didn't even have the LOGISTICS to kill that many people. Modern machines of war is what allowed for such massive casualties, and they have almost all exclusively been for non-religious reasons.

Fun Fact. These ten commandments are not what the bible calls the ten commandments. Here are the actual ten commandments (or at least the ones supposedly placed inside the Ark of the Covenant). 1. Thou shalt worship no other god. 2. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods. 3. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. 4. All the first-borns are mine. 5. Six days shalt thou work, but on the seventh thou shalt rest. 6. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks. 7. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread. 8. The fat of my feast shalt not remain all night until morning. 9. The first of the first fruits of thy ground thou shalt bring unto the house of the Lord thy God. 10. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in its mother's milk.

Where did you find this information? I thought the Egyptian book of the Dead influenced the ten commandments.

@@totallypartial777 The ten commandments are based on the Code of Hammurabi. The information comes the bible and the Old Testament. Also another fun fact, there are actually more than just ten commandments in the bible (in total there are 613 of them).

@@Z-one1000 I've read the bible, I know about the 613 laws, or commandments. I believe every religion had a hand in creating the bible, influenced by religions in that area. Jesus is a demi God, so you could say that the abrahamic faiths stole from the ancient Greeks as well.

Coveting means envy. And I'm not religious. But what it's trying to convey is don't compare yourself to others. Subconsciously it turns you into more of a negative type of person and increases the chance of narcissism
