damn straight. Neil Young can get more expression out of a single note (see Cinnamon Girl) than standard guitar gods can get out of a million notes played at a million miles an hour. I admire any guitarist who knows they should admire Neil's playing despite the lack of obvious 'technique'. The man knows that music is about feeling, not finger gymnastics. I saw him play live twice in Australia and it was unforgettable.

Neil got along fine with the other members. But Neil is and always has been an incredibly unique and authentic individual. His unique individuality is the only reason he came and went. With every band or group of musicians he ever played with. BTW, Stephen Stills is the most underrated musician of his Era. Bar none.

Steve B, Everyone is always claiming this one or that one is underrated. Steven Stills was part of the Super Session Record and he jammed with Hendrix. Personally, on the recordings with Neil, I like Neil more. Steven is the technically better guitarist but Neil is the Godfather of Grunge and the sound of him with Crazy Horse on say, Cowgirl in the Sand is just off the hook. He loved the power of the amps and was an innovator of using all the sounds, including feedback a la Hendrix. I think Stills may be underappreciated nowadays but I see comments on Led Zep videos people talking like they were there and how great they were, blah blah blah, Zeppelin live back in the day were often disappointing. Bonzo and Page liked their drugs and alcohol and often, the drugs didn’t like them.

Personally, I really dislike Neil Young's voice. The tone is whiny and there seems to be no dynamic change throughout the song. Just a matter of personal distaste.

I AGREE! Neil was a ways better song writer, guitarist and vocalist, in that order. But even his guitar style remains very ragged, "staccato" and limited in approach to this day. On the other hand, he gets a lot of mileage out of old Fender Deluxe-style amps.

The music of that era had a special poignancy and their sound with those amazing harmonies will never be duplicated. Neil Young’s guitar added an edginess that contrasted nicely with their mellow sound but it was his song writing that really elevated their stature. The song Ohio is one of the most powerful and culturally relevant ever written due to the extreme social turmoil of the time. Music will never have the relevance that it once had as a platform for commentary like it did then which is somewhat sad as music is simply a commodity nowadays. I watched them perform live back in 2006 probably for their last time and it was a pleasure to hear their wonderful singing and playing. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

So true. But why? I can’t figure it. Cars, music, fashion, design, America’s space program... everything from 1966 to 1970 was outstanding. Today, we run around with paper diapers on our faces, drive emasculated cars, listen to repetitive, simplistic, boring music, wear politically correct clothes, and the magic and originality is gone. Quality vanished.

I loved CSN without Neil. I've grown accustomed to his sound. But originally. i thot he was ugly n sang like his privates were in a vice grip. I was a more melody n harmony girl. I like him now way more than when he first came on scene. His writing n sound has grown on me...like Dylan...ugly n couldnt sing. But hes my idol now becuz of the memories his songs evoke for me. And his writing is stellar!

Knew of a lot of musician that never even made it that far considering the hard drug days of the 70's and 80's. David did talk about how his wife really helped him get off all of that and he was able to do some great songs after all that too. Also the full acoustic only show they made is still really good.

I believe someone attributed it to COVID, which is possible. Stills has had it twice despite having the jab. Imagine... three fatal diseases and it might have been COVID. Just taking a nap in his own bed... could not have wished a better end for the man.

I love Stills and Young jamming, Saw them together at the Boston Garden on the Stills, Young band tour, 10th row 16 years old. My favorites of all time, had to wait 25years to see them jam together again.

Without Stephen Stills, this band would not have soared to the heights it did. All other members could have been replaced. Stills' songwriting, multi-musicianship and genius production skills are the reasons this was a super group.

@@coachhannah2403 Pardon? If you're saying that my description of Stills applies to Graham Nash, I would respectfully disagree. Nash, by his own account, plays guitar at a basic level, whereas Stills is well known to be a virtuoso on the instrument, and is highly proficient in many other instruments. Their debut album was engineered and crafted almost entirely by Stills. Indeed, Nash has stated that when the time came to tour live, they had to hire a band as Stills had played almost every instrument on the record. Yes Nash can sing and is adept at the high harmonies, but he is much like Art Garfunkel in that he is at best a strong suppport for a master songwriter and arranger, rather than possessing a strong engine of creative talent within himself.

You know, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young is still one of my favorite concerts in 2002 before they more or less disbanded because they all hate each other. It was an over easy performance, but they blended in soooooo good vocally, wrote great songs, and got the audience going. Was a privilege and an experience to see these icons on stage.

Bob Dylan hated Neil Young in the late 60's when he realized he was no longer the greatest song writer. From interviews with Bob and Niel together. In fact they were actually best of friends. I hope someday we will return to the caliber of musicians we had in that era.

I doubt it. There was an explosion of novel songwriting, performance experiences, and production methods and techniques along with new technologies, a cultural revolution, and worldwide communications that had simply never existed before. So much music has been created at this point, that it just gets harder and harder to come up with something new. I was born in 1959 and I think the best years for music were the mid 50s to the mid 70s. There are really good musicians around these days, but they just don't stand out against history like the pioneers of modern music do.

In the opinion of Graham Nash, the reason The Beatles - and not The Hollies and others - was the pre-eminent band of their day, was because they were so connected with the sexual revolution in the 60s. It was such a powerful fusion of entertainment and culture. The 80s was a great era as well. It was dominated with fine recording techniques in the studio (there was hardly an album made with bad recording quality) and it showcased such an eclectic suite of bands and musical genres. The 90s went all introverted and weird (to me), but there were still some great bands around like No Doubt and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Since 2000, there has been a growth of more feminine singer-songwriters that simply would have had no chance of survival before 2000. They're still good, just softer and mostly less aggressive. Bit by bit the wow factor is going out of music.

@@tullfan2560 I'm really not a fan of most of the 90s music. I feel like I'm being yelled (or screamed) at and I don't like being yelled at. I was yelled at enough when I was a kid. I feel like the band, especially the vocalist, is venting on me. I like music that gives me a sense of love, beauty, peace, excitement, eroticism, or adventure . I like the blues, to, but that's done in a way that expresses the singer's troubles without laying them on me. It's not my fault. With the 90s music, even if the words don't express it, the energy blames me for the singer's angst.

Fil, I think you should also do a couple of Byrds songs from the 60's - 8 miles high or mr tambourine man. They had a very unique guitar sound and there's an interesting story as to how that came about as well as how they changed tambourine man from Dylan's folk music style to something that could get radio air play and sell records! A seminal 60's band.

Neil Young playing his one note is reminiscent of Roger Hodgson repetitively hitting the same keys on the piano (cf Crime of the Century) to get a grand, hallowed feel into the music. It also builds up the suspense.

Great video. It's easy to forget what an amazing combination of voices and guitars they were. The first two CSN albums were great on their own, but adding Neil, like the Stones adding Mick Taylor, totally changed the band into an ass kicking blues-rock/ hard rock band.

About 1985 I had just moved from the west coast to a suburb of Boston, alone. I heard a rumor that CSN was playing at this tiny fairground the next day, a hot August Saturday. I had no idea where this was, but I found out! I got to the little county fairground in Spencer, Mass just after noon. Sure enough, CSN was there! It was a $20 to get in, but once inside all 50 or so of us in attendance relaxed on the lawn, bought $3 beers and got to hear Crosby, Stills and Nash play for hours and hours! Neil Young wasn't with them. There is a a little-known recording studio nearby at which many big bands like the Rolling Stones have recorded. That's why CSN was in the area. I think the fairgrounds thing was practice for them. One of my best days!

Supergroup? Definately. The 3 didn't like Neil much, even less as a band member. He'd come out seperately + do his tunes. (4 Way Street). Neil is such a great songwriter + Steve on guitar, WOW! They were quite the pair on" Bluebird " Buffalo Springfield. Probably the 1st supergroup in rock. Another wonderful pick Brother Fil! A rather eclectic mix of personnel. A hippy, an acoustic guitarist with a folk stripe, an Englishman + a Canadian Indian. I'm certainly a fan of theirs!..... Long ago Neil would drive me nuts with his electric playing until one day I got my mind right. People change the #1 string alot, Neil changes his #5 instead!! Ha. Love, love, these guys. Stephen and Neil were in Buffalo Springfield together. When asked why should Neil be allowed to be in CSN he said “have you ever heard Neil play guitar with me?” I think their instruments together has such a groovy sound. Always has been. This is so cool to look back. Their music and their voices are so pure. I have a large collection of their albums. My favorite is “4Way Street” which is live also. A true test of talent is performing live. And these guys had it. The man walking down the steps in the beginning is David Steinberg. He was a writer for The Smothers Brothers show and he also made appearances as a stand-up comic. This was a show in 1970 called The Music Scene that he hosted frequently. He was very hip as far as the music of those times.

Have you watched Bob Dylan and friends sing My Back Pages? Neil was there as well as many of the legends. George Harrison, Tom Petty, with two guitar solos from Clapton and Neil Young. Really worth a listen. Everyone had a verse to sing.

C,S &N and C,S, N & Y were such a large part of my formative years. Right there with Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Skyhooks, Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie, The Eagles, Jon English, Dire Straits, Billy Joel and Elton John.

I saw them summer of 1969, August 27 at the Greek Theater LA - Joni Mitchell opened. My girlfriend (Michelle) and I sat in the trees - a tradition at the Greek for those with no tickets. The analysis was great as always. A very cool feature of your analysis are your guitar demonstrations, which I take advantage of to learn the songs and play along. Soloing is out there somewhere.

@@katiezee2 Hi Kate - I know about those trees too, but they came later and by that time I could buy my way in most of the time. Now about those LA trees; we weren't close, but the trees were pretty much full of people, so it was a sort of party with live music coming from the neighbors yard. Thanks for the reply!
