There's an old Frets Magazine here (1980s) with Chet on the cover, and at the end of the magazine interview they ask Chet, "Is there any guitarist you would pay to see and hear?" Chet responds with just one name: Doyle Dykes.

Thanks so much for this much-deserved appreciation for Doyle Dykes, Fil! Doyle is a better man even than his guitar skills. I encourage everybody to check out his Sunday Stringalongs. You'll get guitar brilliance, followed by sincere preaching and teaching, in the most loving way. His greatest gift!

Thanks for that Fil! That's some fine, complicated and unflashy pickin'. Masterful. Yup, that's how it's done. How cool that You, young man, have such a great appreciation for the rock elders and you express your feelings and observations so we'll. You really open up a deeper appreciation from your fans for you, those you review and cover, and for the history of music and the musicians. Doyle and ALL the other musicians that you highlight owe you a debt.👌 ROCK!🎸

A guy and his guitar, amazing how entertaining that can really be. While watching this I came to the realization how thankful we should be living in our current times. Just think of the millions of shows and artists over the past decades that were seen by an attending audience but almost never were they able to record it unless it was for a television show. Now, thanks to the advent of cell phones, almost everything is recorded and we all can enjoy these amazing talents from all over the world. Thanks for another great analysis video.

Doyle plays with incredible energy and is as smooth as glass. Beautiful chord voicings and sweet tone. Dave Pomeroy is an amazing bassist who also plays with great energy and is a big part of the music scene in Nashville. I met Doyle at NAMM in Nashville in the 90's. I will be seeing him again performing at the CAAS Convention (Chet Atkins Appreciation Society) in Nashville, July 2022. He is one of my top 5 all-time favorite guitarists.

Thanks once again Fil. I’ve heard Doyle perform live several times. I mean I grew up learning and playing rock and then blues from the late 60s on. So the first time I heard him play this finger style genre I didn’t think I would really care for it. But was I wrong. Like you say I got pulled or sucked into that bubble. There are many greats like him that now with age and experience I have come to appreciate them. One time I heard and saw Doyle play his medley of ‘Classical Gas’ and ‘25 or 6 to 4’ and was blown away and knocked over. Couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. At a break I walked up to him and told him I liked both of those songs and have messed around playing them on my own guitar but told him I’d give up my ‘G’ string just to have one of his picks. Not really expecting it he reached out and handed me his thumb pick he had been using to play with. Man what a guy! And he didn’t even ask me for my guitar string. Ha.

Seen him pay at Taylor clinics 3 times. The first time, he played for 30 minutes, absolutely flawlessly. He then stopped and said to the audience: Anyone got any questions? i think its worth a mention, those harmonics are hard enough to play when youre tying to hit just one note with one open string, and there he is actually finger picking the whole chord as well.. which just takes some thing thats extremely hard to get down to a completely new level of 'holy crap did i just see that'... thats some insane skills to get down..

Crazy, man! Wow! This is one of my Uncle's all time favourite songs to play. He and I picked a round of it at Christmas, even though his Parkinson's has advanced so much this past year, he still owned that flat-top like nobody's business! But, nothing like this Cat! Dykes is at a whole different level, without a doubt. Fil, your dedication to these clips, and the hours of research you obviously put in, is mind-blowing! I don't know how you do it. Amazing player, his "Wabash Cannonball" features bending the B string up a half step from behind the nut, between the E and B tuning pegs, to give it that country twang. He uses all kinds of alternate tunings. Another stand out tune of his (with an awesome back story) is "White Rose For Heidi."

Just thinking about the number of genres he covered in that one song... !! 40's Jazz up top, Folk Picking/Bluegrass, Roaring 20's (for Lover Come Back to Me), Flamenco rasgueados, of course some Chet Atkins octave runs, ... that was beyond sophisticated; he uses everything, in service of the music, and never dropping a beat. That was a walk in the park for the bassist, Dave Pomeroy, not having to cover for any occasional lapse. That's music-making at its best.

I've watched your reviews of Doyle, Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith and others. One young Australian guitarist you haven't analyzed yet is Joe Robinson. His head exploding speed and technique is amazing, as is his versatility. Also you should check out his acoustic cover of Santana'a Europa.

I first encountered Doyle Dykes in a tribute to Chet Atkins produced by Gretsch Guitars, which, incidentally also features Richard Smith, Steve Warner (CGP) and others. Well worth the hour to watch (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJumYquojqtjg68). One thing that you did not mention about Doyle's style is that he does not do "pull offs", he does "push offs". In other words, he pushes his fingers up, as opposed to pulling his fingers down, if that makes any sense. Anyway...thanks again for featuring this truly great musician!

The man is liquid lightning!! He is also doing "subtle" (or not so subtle) alternate chord arranging that is atrip!! Most of us have heard these songs and immediately recognize the tune for what it is but here's Doyle, at the speed of an F-22, doing alternate chords that make the piece unique and his own. He amazes me every time.

Great video Fil! Another great fingerstyle guitar review! You should check out Buster B Jones and Brooks Robertson if you want some more fingerstyle guys like this to review!

Doyle is one of the best of the best. His technique, speed, inventive chord voicings, and stage presence make him a must-see performer. He is also a genuinely nice guy who loves his audience.

I think the story was that Doyle asked his Mom if he could invite Sailor to dinner which turned out to be, breakfast lunch and dinner. He stayed the whole day and showed Doyle his picking techniques. He ran into him again some 30 odd years later.

You spoke about him doing several things at once. He was asked once why he likes fingerpicking. Among other things, he said he doesn't need a band. He does it all himself.

Great stuff as always Fil. Haven't been able to see your vids as often as I like recently. Hey, did you ever do a video on Tim Sult of Clutch?

Doyle is on an extremely high and steep level in this video. He truly left his own style and finger prints all over this.
