I went to a concert a few years before this performance when Hank opened for Waylon and he came out bare chested and fired off a couple shotgun rounds and then proceeded to perform a solo on EVERY INSTRUMENT on the stage, ending with him sliding his boots up and down the piano keyboard. Attitude has always been an understatement with Hank Jr.
@edford16935 жыл бұрын
I saw him in 1988. He played every instrument on the stage and in the middle of the show, he sat on a stool playing a dobro singing a medley of his dad's songs. Between cassettes and CDs, I have collected roughly 400 of his songs and the oldest cassette I have is the "Blues My Name" from 1966. My mom or dad had the 45 of "Cajun Baby". I have it now. I also have a 78 of Hank, Sr & Audrey Williams that was my mom's mom had. 🤘🤘👍👍

When musicians do a lot of novelty songs, people tend to overlook their talent. Most people probably have no clue that Ray Stevens was an amazing pianist and organist and was one of the most sought after studio hands and producers. R&B, soul, country, he could do it all. Same with Jerry Reed. Most younger people probably don't even know he was a musician before he was an actor, and one of the greatest guitarists, at that. But back in the 80s and early 90s, Hank, Jr started doing novelty songs and he kind of became a parody of himself. But, yeah, he is highly underrated.

@@wareagle4789 I absolutely agree with you my friend. Also, it's very nice to find someone who appreciates the talents of Ray Stevens. It also must be said that he also has a great singing voice as well. As cliche as it might be, Everything Is Beautiful is a great song.

@@brianmiller6055 I've actually met Ray a few times, and he's always been very gracious. One experience I had with him was back in the early-80s, when I was on the staff of a radiothon and he was one of the celebrity guests. He was very gracious and friendly to everyone there, and when fans would approach him, seemed genuinely grateful for them. He said, "If anybody donates $50 or more, I'll sing 'Everything Is Beautiful'" for you! I told him I only had $5 and he laughed and said, "$5 only gets you 'Do Right Woman'" and he proceeded to sing "Do Right Woman" for me. Such a good guy. Roger Miller is another one I should have mentioned earlier. Everybody knows him for his humor, but I don't know how many people know that he was one of the most sought after fiddle players in Nashville, until he finally landed with Ray Price.

@@wareagle4789 that's a great story my friend. I always believed Ray was just a good old down to earth man. Roger Miller was such a great storyteller and underappreciated as a musician. Florida, where Lynyrd Skynyrd, is from about 2.5 hours to the East. Jimmy Buffet, lived for years right down the road. Around here 2 out of every 3 night clubs you go to here play this kind of music. Root of the blues literally minutes away and southern blues minutes away in the opposite direction. Easy to meet people who knows or knew HANK JR (Bocephus) and Skynyrd, Buffet around here. This is the music I grew up on in Alabama. I saw him in concert as a tween (thanks Mom!) and he was amazing. Perhaps the second best live musical performance I’ve seen. (The top being Willie Nelson around 2006, if you’re curious.) Anyway, growing up steeped in Williams family lore I think it’s interesting to note two musical points of interest about Bocephus: 1) we all know his father but his mother Audrey was a musical woman herself. I’m not sure if there are any recordings of her but she was a pre-tv radio performer for several musical variety shows. She sang, I know. Not sure how vast her talent was but she had some musical ability so Hank Jr gets the music gene from both sides of his family. 2) I’ve seen interviews with him talking about how the accident changed his voice. He cracked his sinuses so badly that the entire timber of his voice changed. He sounded different to himself, and somehow that is where the bombastic voice we know to be Bocephus came from. Anyway, thanks Fil. I know that song well but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that awesome performance.

I have seen Hank Williams Jr. 3 times. He has the honor of being the best and worst concerts I have ever seen. The worst was when he was off the wagon, he was so impaired that he fell on the stage multiple times. The crowd would start booing. It was sad. But the last time I saw him he was clean, and was AMAZING. During the middle intermission the entire band left the stage, and Hank began a round of soloing every instrument on the stage. It was incredible, everything from the guitar, bass, lap steel, piano, drums, sax, fiddle, banjo, etc. His talent is incredible, but he had the same demons.

A Hank concert was an EVENT! He can play every instrument on the stage and absolutely “get after it!” Every time he walked on that stage he had so much baggage to carry. He had his shares of missteps because of that pressure. As Waylon said, he wrote some great songs like Hank Sr., better musician, good vocalist and most of all he lived through it...Hank Sr. didn’t survive it. Hank Jr.’s body of work is phenomenal. He wrote so many songs. “Mr. Weatherman” is worth listening to. Hank Williams, Jr. and Friends is a pivotal album in country music.

In the middle of the show, the band left, leaving him at the piano and he just did about forty minutes just telling stories and playing the songs that influenced him. It was highly uncharacteristic of him to be so laid back, as his shows tend to be highly bombastic, but it was amazing. It was as if he stepped out of the "Bocephus" character and you were in his living room just visiting. Amazing that Hank was brought up by musicians, with Jerry Lee teaching him to play the piano. Thank you for this video and again introducing me to an artist whose name was familiar to me but, for whatever reason, I had never heard. While I am simply neutral on Hank Sr., I loved and was impressed by this performance. Hank jr. seems to have a totally honest, unpretentious and natural stage presence, singing to the listener like an old friend on a visit. I suppose all the preceding can be put under the umbrella of “attitude” but the attitude of this particular song is a rare one: he can write with a fine sense of humour, like telling a funny story over a drink or two, without having to resort to a so-called “novelty song.” In closing, his singing and guitar playing are so emotive that the performance is a perfect treat. I now have another artist to feed into my obsessive collecting machinery. Fil, thanks again! 😎🎶🎶

What I love about Jr. Is he made the establishment recognize his work. Nashville did not except him. They wanted him to be his dad. And he was until after his accident I think. The establishment did not want this outlaw to become what he did. The people though had a different idea. He had his problems but he was a show machine. In the 80's he would have a 2.5 to 3 hour show. One of those hours would just be him and a acoustic guitar in center stage. He loved his daddy and loves his country.

I love to listen to hard Southern Rock bands and singers like Hank jr. I would like to see him in concert. Another great band of Southern Hard Rock I wish you can analyze is the Kentucky Headhunters.

I don't think I've ever seen a reaction to the Kentucky Headhunters by anyone. I think it's long overdue.

Did you ever get to check out or see The Outlaw's, Skynyrd, Hatchet, Charlie Danielle's style of hard southern. It's just my opinion but Hank is pretty far from hard southern. All subjective of course...

Absolutely check out the Kentucky Headhunters ! Ironically , the first time I ever heard them was at a Hank Jr concert . A three band show , Doug Stone was first ( kind of average country singer, straddling the line between then mainstream country, and what later was called neo traditional . But the wife liked him .) Second was the Headhunters , and Hank Jr was headline ( supporting his Hotel Whiskey album ). I was and am a big Hank fan , and he was outstanding as expected . But I was massively surprised by the Headhunters . Even during their brief commercial heyday , they were largely unknow outside of their fans . They fell inbetween the musical cracks of the day . They were waaaaay too Country sounding for any rock stations . But waaaaaay too freaky looking to ever get played on a Country station .
