Oh geez. I've loved this song since 1985. The lyrics, the vocal melody, and that pulsing rhythm, all combined to make a song I've always thought of as "haunting." Fil, you call it "unsettling," which is also spot on! That "Stranger Things" used this particular song for Max is beyond perfect. I love your breakdown, and I'll admit that I hadn't caught the Bluesy "call and response" of the chorus, but you are right! I love the Blues, which might explain why this song implanted itself in me. I didn't know why; I only knew it was a gem. Thank you! Oh for a return to the days of pure vocals. Autotuning Freddie Mercury should be an international crime. ☹️

When you next visit Kate Bush again I think the song "Rocket's Tail" would be really interesting to see broken down. The first half is acapella with Kate singing over backing vocals provided by the Trio Bulgarka, Bulgarian folk singers with their wonderful shimmering voices. The second half is heavy and rocky, with guitar by none other than David Gilmour. It fits in with what you've just been saying about being brave vocally. Not many artists would be this brave.

The song was first featured in the movie "The Chocolate Wars" in 1988. That was when I first heard the song. It is a fantastic movie and is available free on the internet. They originally wanted David Bowe's song Heroes, but he wanted $100,000 and with a movie budget of only $500,000, Kate Bush gave permission to use her song at a really low price. The movie is a gem and anyone interested in seeing it will not be disappointed.

Thanks Fil....Kate is a modern day Mozart, she hears the complete song and music in her head. She really is a genius. Michael Deane. All of your wonderful comments also apply to an American songwriter, Kerry Livgren of Kansas. He doesn't sing, but he is an amazing composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and multi-instrumentalist. Never took music lessons, can't read or write music - it all comes from his brilliant mind. Then he would teach the parts to his 5 incredible bandmates. Please more 70s deep tracks from Kansas! Thanks Fil.

The use of backing vocals to create dissonance towards the end of the song reminds me a lot of what is going on with the orchestration in "How to dissapear completely" by Radiohead. One of the things that I think makes Kate Bush still stand out is her willingness to use her voice in sometimes unflattering ways for emotional effect. "Night of the Swallow" would be a very interesting track to look at her use of pitch.

Although Kate made extensive, and innovative use of her Fairlight synthesizer, her song-writing, her vocal presence, and also her piano playing, always brought a very human warmth and passion to her recordings that rooted them firmly in the 'sensual world'. Your analysis really highlights not only how good a singer she was, but her musicianship as well. She was well advised and supported by her family too on the business side of things - she owns all the rights to her catalogue and recordings, so no lame producer is going to muck about with her vocals in order to 'correct' them. Or get any of the royalties she's earned from the revival of RUTH!

Did we call this "New Wave" or 'Alternative" music ? Kate Bush was also referred to as the "Witchy" look and feel - maybe a bit "New Age rock" ? The most fun thing about listening to a new Kate Bush tune in the 1980s was that there were always going to be SURPRISES - odd backing vocals, weird but catchy synthesizer riffs. This was also true of some other 80s artists - remember Lena Lovitch ("My Lucky Number is One") ? Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby - what fun and creative stuff. Kate Bush was one of those great artists you could count on to never give you the same old thing twice. BTW, why would anybody ever autotune Freddy Mercury ? If ever there was any singer who had no need for autotune it was Freddy Mercury. He was like a human autotune - I never heard him sing out of pitch.

That is an excellent observation on a number of different levels. Not only do you speak of Kate's voice in the context of this specific song but, I believe that it can apply to her body of work in general. Not only does she sound apart from the instruments within this song but she sounds apart, in the sense of unique, when she is compared to other musical artists. I really enjoyed your analysis here. Awesome Fil. I seem to remember a story told by Kate, that when she was playing with her synth (Fairlight ?) she accidentally recorded her dog/s and became intrigued/ delighted by the manipulated sound, and featured it in this song. Adding an unsettling dogs bark suits the song. Is this why your software is picking it out so clearly?

@@paulmorgan8254 It may well be, but so are the instruments. The AI isn't isolating audio according to pitch, it's learned and is constantly learning to recognise a human voice in amongst other noises that aren't human.

Many thanks for this video, Fil. This song never fails to deeply resonate with me. I don’t know exactly what it is but it sounds other- worldly. But your analysis helped me to understand it.

Hi Fil, brilliant analysis!! This song is found on Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" album, which is my favorite. Coming late to her work in the early 90s, I initially thought the CD was defective when I heard this song's outro for the first time. It finally dawned on me this was only another example of her artistry. Her ability to alter the timbre of her vocals is stunning. And you are right, all that screaming and shouting is quite unsettling. Are you familiar with "Under Ice" and "Hello Earth" from the same release?

As much of a fan of Kate Bush as well as Hounds of Love, I am as much if not more of a fan of her earlier work. I think Ariel is one of my favorites. But her quirkiness on songs like Suspended in Gaffa and Army Dreamers made her stand out miles from any other artist. Fil, I would love to see your software reaction on some of her earlier songs. Hell, even Wuthering Heights. Kate is a wonderful example of what is possible when an artist is just left alone to create without outside interference from the suites and bean counters.

@@DavidEVogel as a teen in the states, I was smitten by Kate when Kick Inside first came out. Where I lived we had an excellent FM radio station called WMMS that had a one hour Import Hour program every Sunday night. The first song that I ever heard was James and the Warm Gun. I went to my local record shop and snapped it up.(in the import section, naturally). Kate was the first celebrity crush that I ever had. She was only two years older than me (well, you know how teenage boys think) a friend of mine that worked at the record shop gave me a nice big poster of Kate in her sexy lion apparel to which I planted over the top of some other posters that already covered every square inch of my bedroom. When I heard that The Tour of life came out on VHS, I quickly started becoming a very polite real pain in the ass at my record shop. I literally wore it out. I bought everything that Kate has done. I actually like 50 words for snow. I guess I feel that I have to make up for the too many people in the states that don't know about our favorite superhero.

@@scottmcgregor4829I am also an old fan of Kate. I bought The Kick Inside on vinyl when originally released, and copied it to cassette. I listened to The Kick nonstop in the car. Something was different about the album. It can only be referred to as "performance art."

Nice to hear the subtle voice qualities and added sounds which are used to build tension while creating that delicious unsettled quality. As we appreciate Kate's voice and her creative choices, your dissection just helps us understand her genius all the more. As you talk about the sustained notes and isolated vocals up front, I can't help but think of Phil Collin's 'In The Air Tonight'. You must analyze Genesis and how they create the moods and tension in their music. It seems they use similar devises as Kate does here. Maybe look at Kate and Peter Gabriel in 'Don't Give Up'?
