Nightwish is one of the best band in the world, very versatile with their music, their live performance always impressive, and their lead singer Floor Jansen is arguably the best frontwomen singer. @Laurie Baeseman: This is one of the reasons why I love reaction channels: they bring some really outstanding music to people that have not been aware of. Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish! Assuming you'll be checking them out, you should mainly stick to live performances if possible. Top quality videos in the current lineup are those from Wembley 2015 and Tampere 2015. Wacken 2013 (where this performance was recorded) was with their "old" drummer Jukka. Also End Of An Era 2005 with their first singer Tarja is definitely worth a listen (she has a purely operatic singing style)

Nightwish went to another level when they added Floor. Her versatility is just amazing. Tarja was great but she was bound to operatic vocals on every song. Tuomas can throw anything at Floor with no limits like before. I think the new album will reflect this even more.
@dougmphilly5 жыл бұрын
kinda hope so. last album lacked the beginning to end punch that imaginerium had. i still maintain that tuomas composed his greatest works with the weakest singer.
@martypv5 жыл бұрын
@@dougmphilly I agree. My favorite albums are Annette's even though she was my least favorite singer. I just felt Floor was held back too much on Endless Forms. He needs to let her loose on the new album. It felt to me that he was holding on to some residual vocal conservatism from the Annette era. Although like you I think his most inspired compositions were with Annette.
@ORagnar5 жыл бұрын
She's terrific, but I prefer Tarja.
@Garbox805 жыл бұрын
@@martypv I don't think it had anything to do with previous singers rather than the fact that Tuomas wanted to write that theme album. And he had said Floor that he wants to challenge her to sing softer too, as she hadn't really done that yet in the past. And in Floor's recent interviews she has said that there's something in that nee album that's new to them too, so I'm really curious to see what it is. What haven't they done yet? Rap? Reggae? Maybe tango? 😁
@jennd89354 жыл бұрын
@@ORagnar I listened to both live versions (on KZbin) and I was impressed with Tarja (and I think it was written basically for her), but I just don't think she has the same versatility as Floor, or the same presence, or the same force. In MY opinion, most female singers sing what they can; Floor sing whatever she wants to sing.

No one should be left out being praised in this master piece. Thanks for explaining the importance of the drummer in this score and the use of the click track. The importance of the composer Tuomas Holopainen goes without saying. I only missed the attention paid to the stage technicians. The lights showed the mood of the the score.

Did you know that Emppu always writes his own solos? Tuomas has said that the guitar solos are the one thing he never touches. :)
@justuss_5 жыл бұрын
Emppu also wrote most of his riffs on the first three albums and also played bass on the first album!
@donepearce4 жыл бұрын
And Emppu's solos always serve the music - he is never self indulgent. His solo here is a simple melody, which is dead right. In other songs he lets go a bit more and uses tapping etc. But his most impressive trait is his fast rhythmic playing. He looks relaxed, but every note is scalpel-precise.
@MrKockabilly4 жыл бұрын
But don't practically all guitarist create their own solos?
@alwayscasesensitive Жыл бұрын
Well, his solo in GLS is basically the vocal melody of the "A siren from the deep came to me....." section which is a melody I assume Tuomas wrote.

Great insights as always. I liked your info about the backing orchestral track. I'd always just assumed it was electronic and then played in the background. Nice to know its real instruments and singers. What most vocal coaches and professional singers say about Floor Jansen isn't that she's just a versatile singer, but how fast she can switch between styles and voices live. Most singers need time to shift styles or voices. Floor does it effortlessly. She has such control of her breath and muscles. She could easily be a highly successful studio session vocalist with her versatility and talent, but thankfully she joined Nightwish instead.

Replayed sections here then went to the video to watch the full mesmerizing performance. When Floor goes from that classical sounding head voice to her chest voice she morphs into a high priestess of rock summoning her disciples. The whole band is amazing. Lots of beautiful hair is a plus. Your comment about being open to genre(s) outside our favorites was spot on. They are the very best live band out there, with the very best singer out there, and with the very best composer of modern times ( together with Arjen Lucassen from Aureon by the way). Everything they do is epic. This is 10 minutes, but the greatest show on earth with Richard Dawson is something of 20 minutes and they nail that to. This was song number 13 out of 15 where they nailed every song. As they nail every performance. It's a nailing factory. And it is a time machine. Because you forget the time when listening to this. They bring the listener in an absolute trance by pure beauty. What is the power of music? The power is that it adds years to my life by pumping so much endorfine hormone into me. And that is what Floor does. She pumps emotions into you. Not by a flimsy wifi connection but by means of a hugh underseas data cable. They really are THE gods of music. Thank you for your reaction.

You so get it! It's not just the technical capabilities, it's not just the depth of the lyrics, it's that basic emotional connection between music, singer and listener that makes the best music so damn special.

I've seen a couple of their vids but know nothing about them. Thanks for the info and introducing them to me. I enjoy this type of metal, the genre blending and all, and sometimes it can get cheesy but these guys pull it off right. I like Floor's style too, she looks very regal up there.

One thing that amazes me about western Europe is the common understanding of English even though it may not be the primary language of that nation. Here we have a band from Finland that sings most of their songs in English and they have huge success in places like Austria, Germany, Norway, Netherlands, and Sweden, just to name just a few.
@deanroddey28815 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that English is ultimately of Germanic origins (via Germanic tribes that moved to north western Europe after the fall of Rome and who later enjoyed building boats and doing a little rape, pillage, and invasion down south from time to time) with a few infusions of Latin, and an infusion of French bits later on.
@Nrde5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention Latin-America, just a proof of what Fil said about not having to understand the words perfectly to connect with the songs.

Floor the lead singer comes from the Netherlands, I don't know about the Finnish school system i assume it's about the same but i honestly don't know, what i do know besides our native language dutch , Nowadays we teach children as young as 4-5 English, this continues till high school and if you make it to university good chance all lessons are given in English. Now before you correct my spelling errors i am 50 , back in the 70's there wasn't English at kindergartnen and we got at most an few hours English in high school each week! So most of my knowledge comes from the Internet playing games with foreigners in multiplayer games.

@@deanroddey2881 We here in bavaria have allmost the same words like in english, and in many european countries kids are forced to learn english automatically as secoand language in school...

Knowing that Finland IS a country with a population of approx. 5.5M it is a given fact that learning foreign languages is vital for us. Kids nowadays start their first foreign language when they are 7. By the the time they are in their teens many of them have been studying 3 or 4 languages (including their native language of finnish or swedish... yeah... we have two official languages up here)

Be prepared to dedicate the time for this ... please! You will need do this if full. As it is broken into movements... but it all adds up to one story. To cut anything would be to mess up the ebb and flow of the song as a whole. If you do this... please find one with the lyrics and vocal passages. And if you are not familiar with the history of this particular song. Do some research. Thanks for including NIGHTWISH into your rotation! 🤘

Starts with a very heavy beat, then her voice comes blending into the best then floating over it, it was very interesting, very technical but “spot on”

Conversely, I introduced my son to the band when he was about 7 years old when their "Once" album had just been released and Ghost Love Score has always been his fave Nightwish song. We saw the band together in 2019 after which he told me that Ghost Love Score is like an unbreakable bond between us and he doesn't think he will be able to listen to it after I die. My ring tone when he phones me is the intro to GLS so it always reminds me of him just as the song will always remind him of me.

Nice to see a different take on an epic performance. You are right about the need for a limited backing track to keep the size of the sound. I notice Epica have an orchestra on stage when Floor joins them for a duet of Sancta Terra. Something worth watching.

THE best analysis of this video out there. And I fully agree with all you said- as you know, something I may not always do. This isn't "auto-tune" kind of bs. This is creating an "EXPERIENCE" for your fans, by transporting the incredible studio experience that brought this epic tale to life for so many, out, to a LIVE performance. And it was utterly outstanding. I was going to recommend you do this video, but decided to search to see if you already had.. must have, because of how insanely good this performance was- and here it is. Just an outstanding job of fully explaining the technicalities, musicianship, and effort it takes, to create something this incredible. I would LOVE to see more of this. You probably know by now that I'm a, "Do it yourself", "Write it yourselves", -type, but this? I have ZERO issues with, because there aren't any. NO musician, vocalist, or song creator, relied on anything but themselves, to create this art. Even the backing track was created by professionals, and NOT claimed by anyone in the band. People KNOW there's no orchestra there. So nothing's being hidden or lied about. And that makes all the difference in the world. One last thing Fil? At the end, I love what Floor did, when she even nailed the "I-give-you-the-man-who-held-it-all-together-and-made-this-entire-experience-possible"- gesture to the drummer at the end. She knew the effort he had to put in, to keep it all together, and it was awesome to see, from a woman who just shattered the "best-rock-vocal-performance-of-all-time" record, and, imo, put herself up there with Ann Wilson and the rest- she's not a smooth, vibrato-filled type- she's her OWN type. Truly amazing performance by her.. Ok... that's my use of hyphens for the decade- I'm out. ROCK!

I have heard almost all the Nightwish reactors try to analyze what they do musically and NONE of them come near to you. I'm sitting here in my mancave at 2AM CST Dallas Tx., stunned, with my eyes and mouth wide open, wondering how long you have studied music. Just phenomenal how you explain all of it, especially the backing track of the London Symphony Orchestra with the LSO adult choir that was performing throughout the song. Another LSO choir, the children's choir, can be heard on the Peter Pan song Storytime. And nobody...NOBODY in the band makes a mistake throughout this 1:30min concert. Just amazing...magical even. And Jukka...I didn't realize what he had to accomplish to keep the band from falling apart(literally) until you laid it out for us. It was very difficult to learn that Jukka had to retire from playing because of his constant insomnia. He's working on other things with the band now. Emppu can shred for sure, but I think Tuomas wrote that GLS solo for him. Emppu's work on 'Romanticide' and 'Song Of Myself' shows what a monster guitarist he is. And bassist Marco Hietala has also retired now. Floor will really miss singing with him for sure. :-( Speaking of Tuomas, he is the guiding genius, the 'Metal Mozart', if you will, of Nightwish. I would love to hear him explain how he came to work with one of the greatest orchestras in the world. And yet he can still headbang lol. And Floor? Tuomas grabbed her in 2012 after the previous singer had to be hospitalized. Floor herself was recuperating from a serious mental issue. She had, however, worked with Nightwish before so she was familiar with Tuomas's songwriting and the band's musical artistry. Floor has changed a few things on the songs to give them more of her influence and 'Ghost Love Score' was one she changed toward the end of it. Again, my sincere appreciation for your masterful analysis of the greatest Metal band I have ever had the pleasure of listening to and watching.

The quality of Nightwish performances has always spoken for itself! Fil, thanks for giving credit to the amazing composer and arranger, as well as the entire staging and production team that creates the Nightwish experience live! The musicianship is top notch every time, without which the production would crumble under its weight! Nightwish precisión and commitment keeps the tracks, vocals, and instrumentation successfully defying the entropy that would dare to knock down the intricate technical, dazzling experience. Great band, excellently analyzed Fil... Rock! 👍🏻

Nice one Fil. You pretty much said what I've thought about the guitar solo here: it isn't the fastest or most complex solo, but it's the RIGHT solo for this song, and that's what really matters. If you want to see a more elaborate solo, check out Romanticide from the same 2013 Wacken concert. Alternatively, if you want to see something unusual with the guitar, check out the video of them doing While Your Lips Are Still Red live at Wembley: Troy Donockley plays the guitar with an Ebow, doing a part which, if I have it right, was originally written for a violin.

I’m watching your analysis again for this masterpiece. I came across Nightwish by recommendation from KZbin, thankfully. Never heard of them prior. Now I’m obsessed. Floor Jansen blows my mind. Has anyone asked you to analyze her duet with Henk Port singing the title track from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, The Phantom Of The Opera? Her range again is well performed.. Rock!
