Steve Rothery is one of the best guitarists in the world!. There are not many players who make the guitar sing with emotion. Just listen to his guitar solos on any of Marillions songs.

The first band I ever got into was Marillion. I was obsessed for decades. Just after that it was also Pink Floyd. (Hi Dave.) All this time I was having guitar lessons. While this music is clearly wonderful, have you _any_ idea how crippling it is to be constantly confronting perfection while trying to learn a skill for yourself? Without even realizing that what you are listening to is the very best there is? Sure; we all sort-of think that we listen to the best stuff out there; that's why we listen, right? But I thank all of you who comment about just how good Steve is. Because it makes me feel slightly less bad about being so $#!@. ;)

Great to see Steve Rothery getting some love, I met him in a pub where he'd gone to play for Fish as a favour to Fish's friend who owned the pub. the strangest gig I've ever been to, the pub didn't even have a stage, it was just a pub. My friends and I chatted with them for a long time and they were just nice guys who enjoyed a laugh. This was quite a long time after Fish had left Marillion, so it was nice to see they were still friends.

Glad you looked at Steve's work. He is so underappreciated. His playing has grown so much over the years from providing instrumental support for Fish in Marillion to being the emotional centre of the newer Marillion and with his own band. Yes he can play hard and fast but why when you can play this well and have so much impact. If you listen to Gaza, yes H provides a lot of the feeling but it is the guitar playing which makes the most impact.

I've seen Steve play with both Marillion and The Steve Rothery Band on numerous occasions and have been lucky to have chatted with him on quite a few occasions. He's one of the nicest guys in rock music and will always make time for you. Just a quick shout out to the rest of the SRB too. They're Dave Foster on guitar, Leon Parr on drums, Yatim Halimi on bass and Riccardo Romano on keyboards (as well as vocalist Martin Jakubski for when they do the early Marillion tracks). All 5 of them are amazingly talented musicians and all are great, down to earth guys too.

Another big influence of Steve Rothery, besides Steve Hackett and David Gilmour, is Andy Latimer of the band Camel. Check him out if your not familiar with Camel. Great great band and Andy is fantastic guitarist.
Steve Rothery my second favorite guitar player playing for my favorite #1 band ever. Very underrated prog rock band and very underrated guitar player. Everybody talk about Eddy Van Halen, Steve Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, etc who were fantastic guitar players don't take my words wrong but nobody talks about Steve Rothery (Marillion), Andy Latimer (Camel), Knopfler (Dire Straits) and couple of more who are very underrated.
@jack119b9 ай бұрын
Glad to hear someone acknowledge Andy Latimer of Camel. I don't hear his name mentioned very often. As for Steve Rothery, he's an absolute genius. Marillion's Clutching At Straws might be my favorite album if I was forced to choose just one. Steve's guitar playing was over the top on that one. As for his influences, I think I sometimes hear a little Mike Oldfield in his playing as well.

Thanks, Fil. I always like to hear proggers. For some reason his general sound in front reminded me of Shadowfax. I always liked G.E. Stinson's guitar work on their first album--before they went to a more New Age sound on Windham Hill and Chuck Greenberg took over most creative control. A lot of his new stuff is experimental, but might be interesting to you--and he can still put out some pretty good licks when he wants to.

Even groups like Spock’s Beard, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Yes, etc. I just can’t listen to Marillion. I know they are pros and work hard at their craft. Rothery is probably one of the - if not *the* - most under-appreciated guitar players alive. Unfortunately, we live in a time where louder harder faster is the measure for all things, and Steve goes just the opposite direction: putting a lot of feeling into every single note, and yet he has such a great variety of modes of expression. I'm just amazed again and again by what this man does.

I totally understand what you mean. Spending a great deal of time trying to play a run with a million notes about 20 million miles an hour is a waste. Expression is very important.
