Steve Rothery is one of the best guitarists in the world!. There are not many players who make the guitar sing with emotion. Just listen to his guitar solos on any of Marillions songs.

The first band I ever got into was Marillion. I was obsessed for decades. Just after that it was also Pink Floyd. (Hi Dave.) All this time I was having guitar lessons. While this music is clearly wonderful, have you _any_ idea how crippling it is to be constantly confronting perfection while trying to learn a skill for yourself? Without even realizing that what you are listening to is the very best there is? Sure; we all sort-of think that we listen to the best stuff out there; that's why we listen, right? But I thank all of you who comment about just how good Steve is. Because it makes me feel slightly less bad about being so $#!@. ;)

Great to see Steve Rothery getting some love, I met him in a pub where he'd gone to play for Fish as a favour to Fish's friend who owned the pub. the strangest gig I've ever been to, the pub didn't even have a stage, it was just a pub. My friends and I chatted with them for a long time and they were just nice guys who enjoyed a laugh. This was quite a long time after Fish had left Marillion, so it was nice to see they were still friends.

Steve Rothery my second favorite guitar player playing for my favorite #1 band ever. Very underrated prog rock band and very underrated guitar player. Everybody talk about Eddy Van Halen, Steve Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, etc who were fantastic guitar players don't take my words wrong but nobody talks about Steve Rothery (Marillion), Andy Latimer (Camel), Knopfler (Dire Straits) and couple of more who are very underrated.

Glad to hear someone acknowledge Andy Latimer of Camel. I don't hear his name mentioned very often. As for Steve Rothery, he's an absolute genius. Marillion's Clutching At Straws might be my favorite album if I was forced to choose just one. Steve's guitar playing was over the top on that one. As for his influences, I think I sometimes hear a little Mike Oldfield in his playing as well.

Glad you looked at Steve's work. He is so underappreciated. His playing has grown so much over the years from providing instrumental support for Fish in Marillion to being the emotional centre of the newer Marillion and with his own band. Yes he can play hard and fast but why when you can play this well and have so much impact. If you listen to Gaza, yes H provides a lot of the feeling but it is the guitar playing which makes the most impact.

I've seen Steve play with both Marillion and The Steve Rothery Band on numerous occasions and have been lucky to have chatted with him on quite a few occasions. He's one of the nicest guys in rock music and will always make time for you. Just a quick shout out to the rest of the SRB too. They're Dave Foster on guitar, Leon Parr on drums, Yatim Halimi on bass and Riccardo Romano on keyboards (as well as vocalist Martin Jakubski for when they do the early Marillion tracks). All 5 of them are amazingly talented musicians and all are great, down to earth guys too.

I totally understand what you mean. Spending a great deal of time trying to play a run with a million notes about 20 million miles an hour is a waste. Expression is very important. I think it says a lot about the player. I can tell Steve chooses carefully his notes and does a world more with just enough expression to makes his melodic point across.

I absolutely love Marillion, highly under rated i feel (no, not among their fans and peers) Steve has a magic ability to leave things out, instead of adding more, in guitar play, more isnt always better, less often is better, as proven by Steve right here. And as usual, your videos remind me of other songs that have that level of mastery going on. In this case, Gary Moore came to mind, Parisienne walkways live, to be exact. ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJy4oZmtaa2Zadk ) I dont know if you have reacted to that video already, if you have, i am sure you'll let me know, if you have not.. then i just added another guitarist to your long list of people, you need to make a video about hehehe. Wings of Pegasus Unfortunately, while Rothery is a good guitar player and I generally like prog. Even groups like Spock’s Beard, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Yes, etc. I just can’t listen to Marillion. I know they are pros and work hard at their craft. Maybe it’s a British thing. I can’t imagine spending a whole weekend listening to their 30 year catalog. Maybe their music is just too intellectual for me.

Rothery is probably one of the - if not *the* - most under-appreciated guitar players alive. Unfortunately, we live in a time where louder harder faster is the measure for all things, and Steve goes just the opposite direction: putting a lot of feeling into every single note, and yet he has such a great variety of modes of expression. I'm just amazed again and again by what this man does.

Frank Nolan I’ll give you one on Les Pauls. They are not very well made, you can see filler around the inlays that you won’t even find on an Epiphone, they weigh 12 lbs, they have a narrow dynamic range, the president of the company is crazy in an insane way BUT I WOULDN’T PLAY ANYTHING ELSE. Well, you know what I mean.
@Caddowolf
@Caddowolf 5 жыл бұрын
@@Rodzilla5332 I'd rather have an old Epiphone than a new Gibson. I think they replaced the president after going bankrupt. Maybe they'll get better. I have an Epi Les Paul Special that I paid 100 bucks for. I wouldn't trade it for a brand new Gibson of any kind.
@Rodzilla5332
@Rodzilla5332 5 жыл бұрын
Frank Nolan I hear ya. Even the new Epiphone Les Pauls are really well made. If you just replace the pickups you have a fantastic guitar. They are actually flame Sycamore and not maple but who cares, it still looks great and has a negligible effect on the tone. I have three, a Premium Plus, Custom in Alpine White and an Alpine White Studio and believe it or not the studio is my favorite to play. Just has the right feel. The Custom is a beast that I tune to drop C and the Plus is just fucking pretty. I would like to add a PRS single cut to the mix. No question PRS’ are really well made and have a noticeable difference in sustain and really sound great as well. I’ve sold guitars for about 12 years been lucky enough to play almost every brand on the planet. If you want to find a uniquely made and kinda obscure brand check out Brubaker guitars and basses. He does this “neck through bolt on” thing that really sings. They are drop dead gorgeous as well.

Thanks, Fil. I always like to hear proggers. For some reason his general sound in front reminded me of Shadowfax. I always liked G.E. Stinson's guitar work on their first album--before they went to a more New Age sound on Windham Hill and Chuck Greenberg took over most creative control. A lot of his new stuff is experimental, but might be interesting to you--and he can still put out some pretty good licks when he wants to.

Meanwhile, I hear this and I think of another English guitarist who is in a similar vein of music: Steven Wilson! Would love to see you analyse one of his pieces, some time.

@@327journal Oh yes, the second guitar solo in This Strange Engine is a beauty to behold! But maybe start with a shorter song, like Easter or Sugar Mice, or - my personal favourite - this live version of "Quartz": kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGmldGiJn9KmrtU

So much of my own playing style has come from Steve Rothery. He's an incredible player who doesn't rely on technique.

It’s a shame I can’t stand Hogarth. Rotherhy is so nice, I’m sure there are great Marillion songs after Fish, but H just turns me off. I heard pieces of Fish’s Cliché there.

I agree. I just never could get into Hogarth's style. Fish was such an important part of Marillion, to me. His voice was another melodic instrument in the band. And his range, dynamics and punctuation are so great. He's also one of the greatest lyricists ever, in my opinion. Fortunately, he made some great solo albums after Marillion. Especially "Vigil" and "Internal Exile", which are musical and lyrical masterpieces.

I love Marillion - I love H - I like Fish. I rarely put on Fish-era Marillion these days, though. F.E.A.R. quickly became one of my favourite Marillion albums. Can’t wait for the new album An Hour Before It’s Dark!

Is that a PRS? Sh!t Fil, a PRS plays it's self, no talent needed..lol joking but seriously it's much easier to kick ass on a top notch guitar. I didn't really know this to be fact until I bought an American fat strat. 22 frets are enough!!

Rothery often plays a Japanese Squier as his main guitar, so he's no guitar snob.
