Steve Rothery is one of the best guitarists in the world!. There are not many players who make the guitar sing with emotion. Just listen to his guitar solos on any of Marillions songs.

The first band I ever got into was Marillion. I was obsessed for decades. Just after that it was also Pink Floyd. (Hi Dave.) All this time I was having guitar lessons. While this music is clearly wonderful, have you _any_ idea how crippling it is to be constantly confronting perfection while trying to learn a skill for yourself? Without even realizing that what you are listening to is the very best there is? Sure; we all sort-of think that we listen to the best stuff out there; that's why we listen, right? But I thank all of you who comment about just how good Steve is. Because it makes me feel slightly less bad about being so $#!@. ;)

Another big influence of Steve Rothery, besides Steve Hackett and David Gilmour, is Andy Latimer of the band Camel. Check him out if your not familiar with Camel. Great great band and Andy is fantastic guitarist.

Great to see Steve Rothery getting some love, I met him in a pub where he'd gone to play for Fish as a favour to Fish's friend who owned the pub. the strangest gig I've ever been to, the pub didn't even have a stage, it was just a pub. My friends and I chatted with them for a long time and they were just nice guys who enjoyed a laugh. This was quite a long time after Fish had left Marillion, so it was nice to see they were still friends.

Steve Rothery my second favorite guitar player playing for my favorite #1 band ever. Very underrated prog rock band and very underrated guitar player. Everybody talk about Eddy Van Halen, Steve Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, etc who were fantastic guitar players don't take my words wrong but nobody talks about Steve Rothery (Marillion), Andy Latimer (Camel), Knopfler (Dire Straits) and couple of more who are very underrated.

Glad to hear someone acknowledge Andy Latimer of Camel. I don't hear his name mentioned very often. As for Steve Rothery, he's an absolute genius. Marillion's Clutching At Straws might be my favorite album if I was forced to choose just one. Steve's guitar playing was over the top on that one. As for his influences, I think I sometimes hear a little Mike Oldfield in his playing as well.

Glad you looked at Steve's work. He is so underappreciated. His playing has grown so much over the years from providing instrumental support for Fish in Marillion to being the emotional centre of the newer Marillion and with his own band. Yes he can play hard and fast but why when you can play this well and have so much impact. If you listen to Gaza, yes H provides a lot of the feeling but it is the guitar playing which makes the most impact.

He's one of the nicest guys in rock music and will always make time for you. Just a quick shout out to the rest of the SRB too. They're Dave Foster on guitar, Leon Parr on drums, Yatim Halimi on bass and Riccardo Romano on keyboards (as well as vocalist Martin Jakubski for when they do the early Marillion tracks). All 5 of them are amazingly talented musicians and all are great, down to earth guys too.

I totally understand what you mean. Spending a great deal of time trying to play a run with a million notes about 20 million miles an hour is a waste. Expression is very important. I think it says a lot about the player. I can tell Steve chooses carefully his notes and does a world more with just enough expression to makes his melodic point across.

Rothery is probably one of the - if not *the* - most under-appreciated guitar players alive. Frank Nolan I’ll give you one on Les Pauls. They are not very well made, you can see filler around the inlays that you won’t even find on an Epiphone, they weigh 12 lbs, they have a narrow dynamic range, the president of the company is crazy in an insane way BUT I WOULDN’T PLAY ANYTHING ELSE. Well, you know what I mean.
@Caddowolf5 жыл бұрын
@@Rodzilla5332 I'd rather have an old Epiphone than a new Gibson. I think they replaced the president after going bankrupt. Maybe they'll get better. I have an Epi Les Paul Special that I paid 100 bucks for. I wouldn't trade it for a brand new Gibson of any kind.
@Rodzilla53325 жыл бұрын
Frank Nolan I hear ya. Even the new Epiphone Les Pauls are really well made. If you just replace the pickups you have a fantastic guitar. They are actually flame Sycamore and not maple but who cares, it still looks great and has a negligible effect on the tone. I have three, a Premium Plus, Custom in Alpine White and an Alpine White Studio and believe it or not the studio is my favorite to play. Just has the right feel. The Custom is a beast that I tune to drop C and the Plus is just fucking pretty. I would like to add a PRS single cut to the mix. No question PRS’ are really well made and have a noticeable difference in sustain and really sound great as well. I’ve sold guitars for about 12 years been lucky enough to play almost every brand on the planet. If you want to find a uniquely made and kinda obscure brand check out Brubaker guitars and basses. He does this “neck through bolt on” thing that really sings. They are drop dead gorgeous as well.
