The Animals appealed to me in the 60's because they were edgier than most of the popular British bands. Eric Burdon is such a tremendous talent. It's particularly interesting to watch the clips from the Ed Sullivan Show. He was so young, but he already had such presence and attitude. Thanks, Fil!

What I've always loved about the video and song is how confident in both appearance and sound Mr. Burdon is. He looks right into the camera, a rather scruffy looking young man, but with such compelling confidence in himself. Not worrying about his acne, but so full of brass. And the way he sings this song is equally confident. Just always loved the sound they achieved in their songs from this period.

..exactly, I'm starting to not hop onto any channel who blocks such a reputable professional like Fil of WofP ..these analyses introduce new music to me, and also renew interest in old music. I don't need to chase channels who make people jump through hoops.. the labels have too much attitude actually and are over-estimating themselves, and also are confusing my interest in this analysis for interest in their channel or the song itself

"House Of The Rising Sun" and "Spill The Wine" with War, same singer, two totally different people, both INCREDIBLE. Can't think of another example of this in modern music with lead singers. Eric has many accolades, but in some ways is still underrated.

Yes. With War Burdon looked more like an entertainer kinda. I believe he lived in San Francisco at that time. Perhaps that climate there effected him somehow...in larger scale

The powerful combination of Eric Burden's rough vocals and the "disreputable" nature of the song's topic made this quite a controversial song for 1964 American teenage radio stations. The sweet love songs of The Beatles were fine with parents, but they considered this "dangerously adult" for young ears. I was 15 when the song was released and all the guys I knew thought the song kicked ass! Girls were screaming at The Beatles but this song struck a chord with teenage boys going through hormonal transformation. Yeah, baby!

Loved the Animals. I was just a kid in 64 and 65 when they had their hits but was always impressed with Eric Burdons powerful and bluesy vocals. Don't let me be misunderstood and 1968s Sky Pilot another couple of great songs. Great Review! 😎🎵🎶🎼

Intelligent and informed narrative Fil, and thanks for the upload. The band were good players, but having Pricey on Hammond was the priceless gift , his playing was and is still great, not in the sense of comparison with Wakeman, but it became his meal ticket for the next fifty years. There is a particular point halfway through his organ solo, where he hits a ninth chord with full leslie speaker vibrato, which is the defining moment leading to the powerful vocal re-entry by Burdon and that one chord sets Price out as being the best crossover player between rock, and blues of that era. Burdon was the no nonsense front man, whose vocals ensured chart success for many years.

As much as any other band, even American bands, the Animals were one of The Sounds of the Vietnam War. Any footage, any 40 minute B&W documentary, any movie, will have an Animals song playing in the background. They were one of THE bands of the 60's, one of THE bands of the anti war movement and one of THE sounds of the counter culture. Bigger in the USA and Europe than the UK. Eric Burden went on to become huge in France and Germany as a solo artist and leader in the 70's drug, hippy and alternative underground music scene. Some of his best music from this period too. And what a voice the man had.

The Animals were definitely one of the top bands, and you can still hear their music on the radio today. that story about the Japan tour was incredible. The Beatles had a similar encounter in the Philippines.

I don’t think there’s any standard of perfection, though I do believe there are things which are perfectly unique. This band doing this song IS one of those! Mad props because in 1964 a voice was what it was; no autotune, no whiz-bang technology. The plodding, dirge-like feel made it a progenitor of the upheaval to come; a dirty war, assassinations, tragedy around the world, more. Plenty of feel-good pop to choose from at that time, but very few songs that made it into the wider youth consciousness evoked such wisdom wrought from regret. Thanks, Fil.

Nice to see Eric and the Animals covered in your excellent breakdowns. They were on juke boxes in many of the clubs I played in the mid to late 60's, along with "Them" with Van Morrison, the Kinks, etc. I even had an opportunity in 1969 to be invited to a party at Eric's home in LA. for a party after hours. Unfortunately he was not there when we arrived and his girlfriend had initiated the party. His great danes were cloistered upstairs in his palatial digs in Bel Aire, and we only got to sample some decadent party fare and lots of LA. trendy hangers-on.

1st time I ever heard this song was a Bowlderized version my Kindergarten teacher and her husband sang for us. Mr Williams was an amateur Bluesman, who was janitor in our school. Mrs Williams was my teacher. That was her second marriage. She was widowed. Her son from her 1st marriage became professionally known as Taj Mahal.

good'un Mr Fredericks Jr actually studied for an agricultural degree at UMASS as I recall. For those who have not seen the term before, a Bowlderized version is one in which the more earthy or vulgar references are cleaned up for the ears of upstanding citizens or impressionable youth.

And although I was hip to what it meant to Bowdlerize a song, I looked up William Bowdler just to refresh my memory ---- he was an Editor and publisher who printed a sanitized version of Hamlet in 1918 , with anything and everything bawdy or off-color removed so as not to offend.

Another monster group with iconic hits that are just as popular today. I watched that Ed Sullivan performance live when I was a kid. You could tell Eric had that "it" factor and had a strong enough voice to carry the act himself. This song and others were the staple songs of every young school boy band everywhere. This song has special memories as our Jr High age band was in the finals of a Battle of the Bands against a group of the same age but we had never heard before. One song knockout with each group side by side on stage. The winner was based on cheers from the large crowd primarily of girls. They led off with Happening Ten Years Time Ago by the Yardbirds and I was stunned. They nailed it and that song was way over our ability. We changed direction and went with House of the Rising Sun which we could actually play well and had a good singer. It was no where near as hard as theirs but it was a huge hit already and crowd favorite. Much to the much more talented band's chagrin, we won.

Was lucky enough to see the Animals when they reformed and toured the UK in 1983 Fil, Eric's voice was still as good then. He's up there with Paul Rodgers in the Bluesy/Rock vocals department

Found one I just had to share. Eric Burdon and the Animals covered the Gibb's brothers hit "To Love Somebody". This "hit the streets" in 1968. I knda like it, but I like everything by The Animals. I am not the biggest blues fan but no problem with a long road trip accompanied by a bunch of Blues CD's by The Animals.

Hi Fil , thanks for the reply . Alan Price went on to have a successful solo career . He even had his own TV show for a while . He made some good albums and was helpful in bringing Randy Newman into the public eye by recording his songs . He retained that Geordie accent ! I lived just just north of Newcastle for a few weeks in 2003 , great people .

Thanks for this analyses Fil. A great effort under the circumstances. As you know the Animals were Geordies from Newcastle, as you don't know I am a Wearsider from Sunderland and the rivalry between us is well documented, however despite this I love what the Animals produced and the very first record that I bought as a 16 year old was House of the rising sun. Not only that but in fact although I didn't own a record player, I still bought the record. A bit like buying petrol but not owning a car. IMO the Animals were pure quality right throughout the band. I think it is a disgrace that you tube are blocking a lot of these videos. They need to get their act together before their customers leave in droves. Meanwhile keep up the great work Fil. You are doing a fantastic job.

I have always felt that their version of this song was learned from Bob Dylan's first album. Many people have sung this song & Dylan learned it from his friend Dave Von Ronk. As a matter of fact this song was considered Von Ronk's signature song. But Dylan sung the song completely different. It had a unique soulfulness & is actually is one Dylan's best vocals. The Animals seemed to have been influenced greatly by Dylan's version. Even the uptempo in the last part is Dylan. Dylan had falling out with Von Ronk after Dylan recorded this song. Von Ronk stopped singing the song after Dylan recorded it. And Dylan stopped singing it after the Animals had a hit with it.

I saw The Animals live in 1966 in Honolulu. They were great and I went to the show specifically to see them. But they were not the top billed act. That honor went to Herman's Hermits. The show was billed as Herman's Hermits: added attraction, the Animals.
