Thanks so much for showcasing Barbara Lynn. She is one of my favourite Soul singers. Her particular version of Soul is called the Gulf Coast blues. She is known as the Queen of the GCBs but for my money she is Queen of a lot more! She still performs today at 79 and normally just boards a Greyhound bus along with guitar and heads of to meet like minded folk. No fanfare or fuss. She is an American Treasure!

I’m so glad you did this one! It’s one of my favorite performances from The Beat. I love Barbara Lynn! She recorded a couple of songs at my grandfather’s studio in Houston (ACA). Gatemouth recorded a lot of his early sides there, too. I’ve watched this so many times, but you have now increased my appreciation of it even more! Thank you!

Wow!!!!,,,,RB .... very good selection; Barbara Lynn has a great virtue for the guitar and there are very few musicians who play the guitar with the left hand and she is great; I like the few recordings that I listen to, her album Blues & Soul Situation was the last thing I heard and the l.p. So Good for more than a decade and again I had another decade without listening to it. It is of its existence in the 1960s where a very good rescue was developed. I congratulate you. Also, your analysis was very good and precise; I repeat it is a marvel being one of the few women who play the guitar with their left hand, a star in it I congratulate you, greetings👏👏👏👏👏💯✔🎸🎸🎸♖♖♖🖒🖒🖒👌👌👌👌⚘⚘⚘🎶🎵♩👊🤘

She had guitar chops and a great voice and I love the fact she is playing an Esquire, my favorite guitar and #1. Saw Gatemouth Brown in 1981 in, of all places, Flagstaff Az.... his tone grabbed you immediately, surprising powerful and loud playing finger style only. Great video, have this one in my archives. Wonderful stuff Fil. 👍

5:15 - She was putting the thumb over the strings here in 1966, which she would have been doing for years - LONG before Jimi Hendrix became famous for doing the same thing. 9:30 - Again, she was ahead of her time. See: Nile Rodgers style of "chucking" with Chic in the 1970s.

I saw her perform about 20 years ago in New Orleans at an event called the Ponderosa Stomp. It had an unbelievable bill, including Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, James Burton, Earl Palmer, Dale Hawkins, Tony Joe White, and the Sun Ra Orchestra! Barbara was unchanged, and she played what looked like a Jimmie Vaughan signature model Strat. She was supported by the late great guitar man Lil Buck Senegal, just like how Gate is backing her here.

I see where it could take years to master the guitar and from reading alot of comments people play all their lives and never master what they think they should. That's what I like about your channel, you show these musicians and show their ability. Clarence is someone I've heard many times before, always treated wth much respect when he is on stage. A bit of showmanship in there too! It’s around 2:00 that you see her fret hand slowly going up the neck while she hits that open string (E, I think)...ears and eyes start having an argument. But that fret hand is in position to execute that slide down. I love watching other players doing their thing! I thought “You Left the Water Running” was Ken Boothe! Oh well. I love his version too! You always amaze me, Fil. Looking forward to the day you get around to some Ska and Rocksteady.
