Nils is a Great musician but even better person. When my brothers wife was dying of cancer my brother approached him at s concert. He later took the time out to call her and autograph pictures for her. A couple years later when my brother passed he called the house to give his condolences. At one of his shows he spent time with my 80 year old mother and me making my mother so very happy.

This was mesmerizing. I really enjoyed your appreciation and analysis of Nils style and techniques. That’s my brother, Ronnie Newmyer on bass here. This must have been spring or summer of 1991 because at the end of the year I filled in on bass for a month when Ronnie couldn’t go back for the final leg of the European tour. You picked the perfect song to analyze because it showcases Nils talent so well. My friendship with Nils goes back to his first bands in Bethesda Md. he actually served as an equipment manager for a band I was in that had Bob Gordon on lead guitar. Bob later played bass in Grin. Nils incredible talent doesn’t come as a complete surprise to me because never in my life had I known someone so dedicated and and driven to being the best he could be. His will was unique. That month that I got to fill in for my brother was a dream to play with my old friend and local hero so many years later after he’d had so much success. By the way, the rest of the band is his younger brother Tom Lofgren (who taught Nils his first guitar chords) on keys and guitar, Larry Cragg on keys here/also guitar and has worked as Neil Young’s guitar tech for decades, Johnny Bee Badanjek on drums (Johnny was the drummer in Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), and my brother Ronnie on bass. This is the same band I played with later that year. It was an unforgettable time for me to play with Nils and those guys all over Europe. Ringo Starr came to one of our London shows and sat in for the encores…I still can’t believe it really happened!

One of my favorite guitarists and a very underrated and overlooked talent. I first heard him with Grin back in the late 60's and Neil Young's Crazy Horse. He has and had a great solo career with a bunch of live and studio recordings. Then went to springsteen and I thought that he was again overshadowed by Bruce and Little Stevie. Like George Thorogood, he has always been a thumb picker saying he could never figure how to use a pick. My favorite album of his is the tongue and cheek "cry tough" where fully showed his abilities. Again, thanks Fil, great choice. See your happiness in watching him play and add harmonics to his playing, and his very slick voice (remember, this is almost 30 years old) that has gotten gravely. Too bad he didnt do a back flip while playing guitar (he was a gymnast in high school).

Many years ago I read an article about Nils where he was asked about playing with the thumb pick. While he said he couldn't really get on with a plectrum because if he dropped it he'd have trouble picking it up again. When asked why, he said that he bit his fingernails! Check his fingers if you ever see a close-up of him playing. Always liked the way he used the volume control on the Strat for the "bowing" effect. Saw Nils in London in the mid-70's when he came back on stage for a second acoustic encore with bass player Scott Ball. Nils got the crowd to clap the rhythm, Scott playing upright bass and he played an acoustic guitar. They played " Mud In Your Eye"! Brilliant stuff and at the end the crowd still didn't want to leave. Good analysis Fil!!!

I remember watching a live show with him on Swedish TV back in '76-'78. His playing made a big impression on me; his sound and especially the controlled harmonics, as you point out. He and Martin Barré (Jethro Tull) both used these harmonics but in different styles, and I tried to copy what they did.

Grew up with Nils in Rockville MD & Grin were the top band in the area for many years. We remember him best from Grin way before he played with Bruce. He also played with the late great Danny Whitten & Crazy Horse. Got to jam at his folks house many times in Garret Park MD in the early 70s along with Tommy his brother who you see here on Keyboards. Even these days when he has time he will come back to MD & play at the venue called Strathmore which is about 15 minutes from where he lived in the 70s. One of the nicest guys you could want to meet one of Rocks greats on Vocals ,Keys, Harp & that Strat which is not his original guitar from the days of Grin. Thanks for covering one of the best & Springsteen is one lucky guy to have Nils even if he keeps him playing second & third fiddle to Van Zandt & himself. Nil was born to be the front man & why he stays in the background is still a mystery although it pays well . He's more than earned the right to be up front where he belongs. The singer/songwriter/guitarist format, especially in a trio, is the epitome of a band dynamic. Give me this any day of the week over the typical band. I always loved Lofgren because he does it right, using the guitar as his second voice and sometimes the other way around. I have been a fan since I saw Grin playing in a club. I spent a lot of years in the rock club scene and saw a lot of bands, some famous and some that have long since fallen into obscurity and Grin was one of the highlights of that time.

@@ohcaptainmycaptain3019 Right on. You know how you've seen like an interviewer is talking with "say like" Jimmy Page or anybody and the reporter just sucks, he'll ask a question and then talk over the guests answer. I Saw this happen to Jimmy and he was clearly getting pissed and me to cause I want to hear what Jimmy has to say right. I tell Fil he would make the Very Best interviewer cause he's polite, honest, and true to the music with no discriminaton, . I call him the Ambassador to The people of ROCK 🤘. Greetings back to you from the beach at The Mid Atlantic coast of the US North Carolina✌️

For sure. And he appears to be super knowledgable too. I vaguely remember him talking about some speed shredders deformed little finger and how it was used masterfully to stretch to chords or something, so I looked it up, he was right of course, it was some famous speed shredder guru. @@mitchettie1581

@@ohcaptainmycaptain3019 that's funny and just like Fil too. The guy must never sleep, he's got a band actually two band's one of them is just him playing all instruments and singing, 3 or 4 different channels and said he reads every comment every one. I believe him cause the guy is so damn honest. Yeah man I'm a 40 year guitarist, he's not making up one word any of it. It's incredible, I hope for big things for him and I'm not really one of those guy's you know what I mean I don't wish bad on anyone but. Well you know...

I remember growing up in the Rockville Md area. Nils grew up in Bethesda, and was a local favorite in the DC music scene. It was a big deal in 83 when DC101 added Across the Tracks to their rotation. Then some months later it was announced that Nils would be replacing Little Steven on the Born in the USA tour. I’d been a huge Springsteen fan since hearing Rosalita on The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, so I was already planning to go. I saw it all at the Capital Centre in August of 84. Bruce at full energy, the Big Man on sax, Nils doing back flips on a mini tramp. They played for 2 hours straight, took a 1/2 hour break, then came out and played another 2 hour set! Nobody put on a show like Bruce and the E Street Band! Freeking amazing! Very impressive analysis of Nils’ playing! I don’t know how you’re able to pick out all the subtle effects he’s doing, except to say you’re obviously a very talented and experienced guitarist. Great vid!

Nils is king of bringing 1950s steel guitar technique (the volume swells and pinch harmonics, ‘chimes’ in steel parlance) to rock guitar. He’s amazing. There was a time in the 1970s when he was right on the edge of superstardom but sadly it never happened, probably because he’s such a nice and humble guy, happier as a sideman than a frontman. He used to double track his solos in the 70s with a slide in standard tuning too.

Nils is one of the greats, in my opinion. So melodic and such great structure. His harmonics are sweet sounding, and never harsh or cutting. I have been a fan of Nils ever since seeing him live in the late 70's. I think I wore out the "night after night" album... his live version of "Delivery Night" is one of my all time favorite leads... Bruce is lucky to have him

Nils is dynamite. I've seen him with Springsteen and with Ringo where he got the biggest standing ovation of the night for singing Shine Silently. If you want to review something amazing, go for that song. I also saw Nil's solo show and got to meet him and chat. Although I never saw Nils with Neil Young, that was the great music that introduced me to him. He is a super inspiration. Your analysis of Nil's guitar playing and style is bang on. Thanks. I'm going to sing Shine Silently tonight.

Nils was on A&M Records from 1974 (Nils Lofgren) through 1981 (Nils) then made Night Fades Away on Backstreet records, the label MCA put together for Tom Petty, a pretty wild story in and of itself.
