One day in 1963, my father came home from work to me demanding to be taken to Brooklyn because I'd heard on the radio that Trini Lopez was doing a gig there. I was five years old!! And no, he didn't take me. Some years ago, I emailed him to tell him that story, and he was kind enough to respond and wish me well. My parents had the "Live a PJs", which I'd just about worn out. My father later bought me "Live at Basin Street East", and a couple more as time went on. Trini Lopez was a wonderful entertainer. I'll always regret that I didn't get to see him play live.

Nice analasys, mate. back in 1988 I was playing piano in a restaurant in Brisbane, Qld, Australia. Peter, Paul & Mary were there & asked me to join them for a drink. They were lovely people. Sad news about Trini. When I was a little bloke in the 60's I used to sit in front of the radio-gram & one of his live albums was on my hit list. I was captivated by the horns. Cheers!

Trini's interpretation of this song speaks to me in a way that the Peter, Paul and Mary version doesn't. Even though the subject matter is somewhat heavy, Trini's upbeat performance instills hope that freedom, justice, and love among all mankind is possible. R.I.P. Trini.

Thanks Phil! Trini’s passing makes me sad as I knew him and also his talented brother, Jesse. He deserves this tribute - his Tex-Mex sound was the best! Trini’s strumming style was kind of unique then and many singer-guitarists after that picked up that style - and he was always energetic and loved performing. You’ve got him down pat - that PJ’s album was as just super fun! Thanks again!

I was greatly saddened to hear about the death of Trini Lopez. I virtually grew up within walking distance of PJ's in West Hollywood, where he recorded his first live album. Sinatra had an incredible gift of recognizing talent. Trini was among the first important Latino stars, including the great Richie Valens. You can hear that high "trill" he liked to use, taken straight out of the Mexican mariachi song book. Although he was just a rhythm guitarist, he always used the most infectious beats in all of his songs that always made you smile, even during the darkest times of the sixties, including the Vietnam War. They even gave him a small part in one of my favorite WWII movies, "The Dirty Dozen," in the role of 'Jimenez.' Even though his songs became international hits, I always thought of him as a "local Hollywood band," the same way I thought of groups like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield (who later went on to become Crosby, Stills and Nash), or the Doors, and especially Arthur Lee's seminal group, "Love," whom I hope that someday you will consider doing an in-depth analysis of. But as it turns out, everybody loved them as much as we did, all over the world. Thank you again for creating such an incredibly informative study of this great and beloved performer.
@1111makala4 жыл бұрын
Thats Mickey Jones on drums, who later was Dylan's touring drummer on his infamous '66 tour, replacing Levon Helm who was tired of all the booing when Dylan went electric. He was later a popular character actor, for example a regular on "Home Improvment". Ok, trivial lesson over.

Wow!!!!🎸🎸🎸👏👏👏 Trinidad Lopez had a great success with the cover of "If I Had a Hammer" that a year before Peter Paul and Mary had rescued from an original song that I do not remember who interpreted it and I think it was in the 40s or late 30s. I later remember with great success Rita Pavonne interpreted it in Italian and I like so much this siger ; Trini has a great vercion in fact it took him to stardom and to achieve the support of Frank Sinatra as you well point out; The handling of the guitar in those years, or rather in the 60's, earned him such great recognition that the Gibson Guitar company entrusted him with the design of guitars that are no longer manufactured today and that are collectable; Curiously I remember him not so much for this great vercio or "La bamba" or "Lemon Tree" but for two films, one " The Dirty Dozen" which is one of my favorites and for the version of "Cielito Lindo" that they play in the movie " Born on July 4" Yo7ur analysis is magnificent with him you placed me in the great Pirta uon of Trini Lopez music and rock ... I just tell you that I still have a 45rpm single album from the Reprise label with this success that should have belonged to my parents and an LP "Grandes Exitos" from the same label also from my parents .... Thanks for this lesson👌👌👌👌💯✔✔🙏🙏🙏👊🤘

One touch he throws in, such as at about 1:56 on your video, is that he and the drummer improvise off of the groove for a few beats and then jump back into the regular groove. That just made the whole thing even more interesting.

Consequently, I heard lots of Trini Lopez. Dad was a Beatnic Jazzman. Looking back, it was a strange place around our house. When those genres came on, Dad would stop what he was doing and listen. Later in life when I was a teen, Dad said to me something that was out of character but the thing I carry with me to this day. "There's no bad music, just bad musicians." He didn't know it but Dad opened my mind to all music. My library is over 253,000 songs wide and of EVERYTHING I hear from all parts of my world travels.
