If you walk into an American store and the salesperson says how can I help you, you can simply say, "I'm just browsing," and they'll leave you be. They'll probably say something like, "Just let me know if you need anything." Thing is, people often go into a shop looking for something in particular, or some "type" of thing. So sometimes if they ask if they can help you, it gives you the chance to say "Yes, where are the scented candles?" or whatever, so you don't have to wander the store for 10 minutes hunting them down. Combine the European preference for warm drinks, and the fact that the flavorings for soft drinks were originally used in pharmacies for medicines. The cashier hands you a frosted mug, and you have free refills. In a nearby town, it is an A&W/Long John Silver's. You can set song selections on a jukebox and enjoy the air conditioning. @ephennell4ever2 жыл бұрын
Well, yeah, but you're talking from Florida to Alaska or from Maine to Hawaii ... in most cases, if you say that traveling from a northern State to a southern State is as far as from London to Berlin, that gets the point across without using one of *the most* extreme examples! I think that the Miami to San Francisco example is always good to use, 'cause it uses two places virtually *everyone* has heard of, and could be curious about! And there's only three other countries where a trip that long could be taken by car, while staying inside the same country!

The biggest argument against tipping is because a lot of states have tipped minimum wage that are literally only $2 or $3 dollars so all the server makes is whatever they make in tips. Restaurants are suppose to fill the gap between tipped minimum wage and federal minimum wage if the tips don't cover that amount, but often that doesn't actually happen.

I have an Austrian friend that came to visit me for 5 days here in Portland, OR. Never having been to the U.S. he thought we could drive down to Las Vegas, until I told him it was an 18 hour drive. He had no idea the sheer size of this country. I just told him to remember that the country of Germany, is roughly the same size as the state of California, which isn't even our largest state.

When my family from South Africa comes over the thing they notice the most is our variety. My aunt (who owns several businesses in South Africa) was marveling that we had fresh strawberries in the off season. Raspberries as well. Even things like Oreos- at one store I can usually find 15-20 different kinds and sizes of the cookie. Also- the portions are big and fattening because when immigrants came here they suddenly could cook their home country’s food with the meat, sugar, and spices that they wernt able to purchase back home. Some restaurants began selling enough food for two meals- one to eat, one for leftovers, and it stuck. So America is the way that it is because of abundance and people making what they want to make freely.
