AMTRAK is the only major commuter train in the US. But the history of train travel in the US changed when the automobile came into existence in the early 1900s. And over the next 90 years, many tracks were removed. There was a railroad crossing not a half mile from my house up until the early 90s. And then it was removed because the mine it was serving closed down.

Laurence posted a video about losing his accent. In it, he showed a video clip from 2015 and he definitely had an American accent but something happened and in 2018/2019 he flipped and developed this hybrid British/American accent that he is now using. He does have experience in the theater so it wouldn't be hard for him to cultivate this hybrid accent. ;) As for Americans getting loud in restaurants or other social settings is that you are trying to be heard at your table over the loud people of the table next to you and then the table on the other side of you is also trying to be heard at their table over you and if you throw restaurant music into the mix, the conversations are going to get louder. The problems I have in hearing and understanding British people is they either talk softly and from the back of their throat or they leave out 75% of the consonants of the spoken words.

Aluminum is the alloy used in manufacturing. Aluminium is the raw element on the periodic table that is mixed with small amounts of other metals to make Aluminum. Edit (after thinking during a cig): Basically, unless you're a chemist or working in metallurgy, Aluminum is always the correct word. /sorry Brits. I can also correct ya'll on the right car words too, if so desire. Now that this one is taken care of. :p

Aluminum was the original term anyway. The person that named it later changed it by adding the -ium to make it the same as the other elements. By the time that happened however it had already made it in American dictionaries and scientific books as Aluminum and so it never changed.

I will stand by the Alloy v Element pronunciation, for now. I may actually do research tomorrow (too late tonight, vodka has a hold of me) for names and dates and shit. About accents, Lawrence actually has a video about losing his accent. Also, the US probably has a greater variety of accents than the UK, but, they tend to be more dispersed. If you are in London, you’ll here a new accent every couple of blocks. There are not many places, if any in the US that you could say the same thing. If you haven’t checked out the Erik Singer series on North American accents, it would be a great reaction.

Several years ago I saw an educational documentary about English around the world. The main point is that English is spoken in lots of countries but it does not sound the same in any two places. Jamacians, people from New Delhi, India, Australians, Americans, Irish, people from Bermuda, those in Edinburgh, and those in London all speak different varieties of English. Most people can tell the difference between English speakers of different countries.

Laurence sounds exactly the same in this video as he did in his most recent one, here in 2022. For some the accent doesn't go away. I had a university professor who's from England, he never said where, and his accent was very subtle. He also didn't say how long he's lived here in the US. He casually mentioned that he's English and left it at that. A lady who lived and worked in a small town I used to live in had a very distinct English accent. She had lived here in the PNW, of the states for a long as I can remember and still had a lovely accent. I hope she's still around, but I've not been there in ages.

The Loudness thing most likely stems from just the very fact that we are taught from a young age to SPEAK UP when we want to be heard. In other words, don't mumble under your breath when you're trying to communicate with others. And our generalized American accent may also contribute to the loudness as well, since we tend to enunciate our words a bit better than you Brits, if I do say so myself. 😉😁 Not leaving out certain letter sounds, like T for example, does have an effect on the volume of our speach.

What drives me crazy is how they put "Rs" at the end of words that end in "A." Like America is Ameicur, Canada is Canadur, etc. and then they don't pronounce the "R" at the end of words that actually do end in R. Also, lot of Brits pronounce words that start with "th" as an "f," which is really weird.

Fargo is a Cohen Bros. picture and well worth the watch ("Was that your Friend in the Wood Chipper"), it emphasizes the far northern accent of Minnesota, upper Michigan and the Dakotas. Chicago has an accent all it's own, the KZbin channel "Crime pays but Botany Doesn't" (I personally love this channel), gives you a real insight on not only the Chicago accent but it's attitude also. The southern accent(S) isn't one but many, with each southern state it's own kind of southern talk.

Accents can definitely change. I'm a Mexican American from East Los Angeles. When I was 10 we moved to Michigan and when I was 15 we moved to North Carolina. When I was 16 my grandmother died on the last day of school and the family left the next day on a 72 hour road trip back to East LA for the funeral. My brother spent the summer there to help out gramps. He lived literally 6 feet from the school I went to kindergarten in 1966. Back then schools kept their playgrounds open with supervision after schools hours. You could check out a basketball, a table game, a kickball, etc.. One day my brother and I were playing basketball with some local Hispanics kids who kept giving us strange looks. Finally, one of them asked, "Where the hell are you guys from? You guys sound weird.". I explained that we were from East LA but had lived in Michigan and North Carolina. Our accents and vernacular were a combination of East LA, Michigan, and North Carolina. They , on the other hand, sounded perfectly normal to me because my ear had heard it for the first 10 years of my life.

As somebody that was born and raised in Chicagoland (Metropolitan Chicago area, specifically Aurora) for the first 18 years of their life and has now lived in Wisconsin for almost 10 years I would say, in this video at least, he still has a very strong English sounding accent. That's including word choice when speaking in general. He uses terms/words that aren't typically used as often in conversation in the context that he uses them, at least in the Midwest. I think more than a couple instances of that would tip somebody off even if he did have a traditional Chicago or Midwest sounding accent that he isn't actually from the area. He does use some "Midwestern" terms and colloquialisms though like "pop". And from what I've read, very light reading, you have to almost intentionally try to lose your accent after a certain age once you move somewhere else. So like an American moving to Australia, apart from slang and colloquialisms and what not, would still very much sound American unless they were intentionally trying to sound Australian. So him being here for 10 years doesn't matter much unless he was trying to sound like the people that are here rather than how he learned to speak originally in England. Also would like to add, since you mentioned people talking about your accent, while it is much different than a stereotypical English accent that Americans think of, I don't have really any issues understanding anything you say.

As I've traveled the U.S. I've gotten better at identifying them but I'm still learning the many accents of the U.K. It's even harder when you've never been there. Most of my exposure has been different KZbinrs. But my best guess about Laurence's accent is London. Which doesn't help at all because I know London has many different neighborhood accents so my guess would be possibly east-side London for him, but I'm just throwing noodles at a wall and seeing what sticks.

I lived off and on between Las Vegas, Nevada and the rural part of Riverside County, California (an extremely large county in Southern California) and the bus system is so vastly different. In Las Vegas there are buses running non- stop for the major streets, though less frequently during the late hours. And the part of California I live, they only run from about 5am-9pm, and there are far fewer routes, because everything is so spread out. It makes using public transportation much less feasible for work, etc.

Knowing that Beesley is from Rotherham and Laurence is from Grimsby, they would definitely have different accents to someone from the UK. As an American, I would have thought their accents would have sounded a bit more similar. It's usually difficult for me to tell Northern English accents apart, except for really distinct accents like Geordie and Scouser. For me, there's no doubt Beesley's from Yorkshire but Laurence definitely has that middle-class affect on his accent, though those Northern English vowel sounds still come through occasionally.

Fargo very definitely is worth watching - both the movie and the TV series (originally on FX). Laurence goes into the pronunciation and spelling of aluminum/aluminium in one of his videos. The short version is that Sir Humphrey Davy, who first isolated the element, named it "alumium" (sic). Then he changed his mind and started calling it "aluminum." Other scientists decided that it should be "aluminium," because that's more like the names of other elements, like "sodium," "calcium," and "cadmium." Davy's second version of the name ("aluminum") stuck in the U.S., while most of the rest of the world went with the modified name "aluminium." BTW, there are four other elements whose names end in "-um" without the "i" - platinum, lanthanum, molybdenum, and tantalum. The shoe brand Nike is named for the Greek goddess of victory, and is properly pronounced with two syllables (just as it is in Greek). Americans do pronounce the name Adidas wrong - it was based on the name of the company founder, Adi Dassler.

Lawrence, like most Englishmen who move to the States, has seen his Northeastern English accent soften into a bit of a muddled RP as he's lived in the US. You can still hear some of his Northern tones, but it's definitely not as strong as it would be if he was still in England. P.S. I am always amused when Europeans say Americans don’t travel. What they don’t understand the scope of country. Consider a road trip between Los Angeles and Chicago, Route 66. For a Londoner, they would need to drive PAST Moscow to rival the distance. For me, suburban LA, to Maine, which I have done, is akin to that Londoner driving to Jerusalem. Seattle for me is further than Gibraltar to him. The Londoner could be in Vienna sooner than I can even cross California’s northern border. So, while I do love foreign travel and have very many times, a USA road trip is more traveling than most Europeans do inside Europe.

Cost of living is interesting. I almost got fired many years ago when I bitched about pay rates in my company. There were people in our offices in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey being paid twice as much as me for doing the same job. I just suggested we stop having offices up there and have tele-services to the midwest where both Lawrence and I live... It didn't go over well.

I believe that he has become more American. And I know that he has learned to communicate in American English when necessary. I believe he is from east central Britain. A lot of the pronunciations are learned from television advertisements and broadcast news.

America is composed of many different levels of prosperity. In my opinion, there are dots of prosperity and dots of poverty in the U S. Sometimes the dots of prosperity are close together and sometimes they are far apart. There can be an enormous difference between the prosperity of two towns ten miles apart. Since America is a dog eat dog every man fending for himself strenuously type of place, it is thought that your prosperity is mostly due to your own efforts.

Lawrence's accent - I know that he's from Grimsby, but what kind of English accent he has I could not say. I can tell he is not, Scots, Irish, Welsh, or Cornish. His is not a Cockney accent, nor is it any variation that I would consider "Posh". Has it changed over time... I believe it has, but in the US, he is unmistakably "English".

I always assumed his accent was southern, maybe London. He pronounces his ts etc and has that slightly posh sound we often associate with British English over here. I still think he has a noticeable British accent except on certain words here and there where he has picked up some Americanisms. And from what I gather you’re northern, maybe Manchester or something, where the letter T is often optional :). But I have zero problem understanding you so I don’t know why someone commented about whether you were even speaking English.

I believe the reson its called the midwest is because of how america was established on the east coast and took over more territory westward to the pacific, so at some point the midwest was almost as west as america reached and I guess the name may have stuck from that period

Fargo is an excellent movie. Based on real events & horribly brutal. It is NOT for the kids! Even if it is brutal there are many comic moments. Well, you can get my fave movie list if you are interested. Fargo is full of local accent 'You betcha. Ofta'. LOL!! I live in Toledo, Ohio which is extremely inexpensive. We have an oil refinery and nuclear reactor close by for utility costs and rent is extremely cheap. I pay $660 for a 850 sq ft (79 sq m) apt that includes natural gas (compressed methane) heating and water, my electricity is $0.0475 per kWh, my internet is $70 a month for 300/300 fiber, petrol prices (its gone up with demand but) are $0.793 (57.1p) a liter, vehicle registration is $50 flat per year, etc.

At the time the US 'Midwest' region got its name, the USA did not reach as far as California and the west coast as we see it today, so the 'Midwest' was back then actually the "mid west". The name just stuck.

Free refills are slowly being phased out in most greater metropolitan areas. The only places I see that is rural diners or restaurants. Used to be at most fast food chains that have a soda fountain. I think it’s great they aren’t doing it anymore. No one needs to buy a 32 ounce pop, drink it with their meal and then fill it up again before leaving. That’s 64 oz of pop! For families on a budge it’s nice because you can buy one and let kids share which ive experiences personally when I was a kid. But still, seems like refills are slowly going away. Many Americans are realizing the obesity problem we have.

A food thing that can come as a shock to Americans is ICE. People in Europe--not sure about the UK--drink soda/coke/pop without ice. I found that shocking when I first encountered it. You might argue that the melting ice dilutes the drink but having drunk my sodas all my life with ice, I actually prefer them slightly diluted with meting ice.

We say Ni-key which is correct while Nike(like bike) is wrong. It is an American company named after the Greek (or Roman I cant remember) god. However, we say a-deed-ass which is wrong. It is a German company whose name we can't seem to get right. I try to pronounce it right, but I still get it wrong quite often.
