It was a fantastic moment. Everyone was watching the game and the country really felt united. Some of the streets they showed were actually closed down so people could watch the game and celebrate. It's kind of a tradition to gather with friends, family or go to a bar with either one and drink and watch the game with strangers. If you're ever here when there's an Olympic game going on and especially between the US and Canada, I'd suggest you to a bar and have a drink and watch the game with Canadians. It's definitely passionate. I know people who had to work but the employers would put the game on a tv so people could still watch it. It was that important. I'm not sure if this is true but there's also a rumour that people missed their flights because they wanted to watch the game.

It was my annual birthday ice fishing party and the owner of the ice hut I was renting brought a generator onto the ice and a small antenna TV. I stepped into the hut just as the goal was scored. Absolutely Epic.

I was working in a grocery store at the time and we were giving goal updates over the intercom to the whole store. During overtime myself, 9 other employees, our boss and 7 customers were watching the game in a group huddled around a little 4 inch television in the loading dock. When Sid scored we all went nuts, my boss ripped open a case of Coke and we all toasted to the win while singing the national anthem. One of the best Canadian moments of my life ☺

This is the best story ever!!! Thank you for sharing this!!! I'd recommend looking up videos that record before & after the goal from around the country, & if I'm not mistaken, Canadians from around the world & soldiers serving in wars. It's crazy, chilling, fantastic, & nothing I've ever seen, witnessed or ever been a part of. For half an hour I'd guess, all you could hear was at first just a steady roar. You could feel it. Then, for probably another hour a constant, vibrant humm, and probably for the next 20 hours or more you would hear someone woohooing, singing Oh Canada, chanting CA NA DA!! CA NA DA!! I'm from BC, so there were a lot of "LOOOOUUUU'S" - they were chanting that, because Roberto Luongo was Team Canada's goalie that game & he was also the goalie for the NHL team from BC, the Vancouver Canucks. Sorry (so Canadian of me) hockey, Olympic hockey & Vancouver Canucks are topics I can get carried away with. :/

We as Canadians expect to win every Olympic or Junior in Hockey( both men’s and women’s ! Our team gets together 3 or 4 days before it starts and must jell as a team! Teams like Russia and USA HAVE national programs and their teams usually have much more time as do a lot of European teams ( some are together all year some player for several years) Canada usually has enough really good players to stock at least two teams however but injury’s can play a part for every team!! The Best such event was the Summit Series back in1972! When the USSR CAME OVER TO PLAY 4 games in Canada then 4 in Russia- for 8 games! Unexpectedly Russia went ahead 3 win to 1, in Canada. Then there was a tie game then Canada win 3 in a row to win 4 wins to 3 ! No one new but RUSSIA had a great team and had been playing together for quite awhile! Canadians were stunned and some were really ragging on our team but what a Party when they won! The games over there were in the middle of the night😅! Lots of us got to miss some morning classes to get some sleep! I think there was like 21 million in Canada and they estimate 15 million watched it! I only ever met like two people that never watched it ! Hockey Canada started taking training more skills and better trading from beginning hockey plays all the way up and into Major Junior Hockey ! There have been several Olympic when NHL would not allow teams to let their players go, so junior players and a few pros playing in Europe went !

This was not only a great moment in Canadian hockey history. It was the moment Canada made history by breaking the all-time Winter Olympic record of 13 gold medal won by a single nation. Men's hockey is always the last thing that happens in Winter's Olympics, we won the record breaking 14th gold medal in the last possible moment! 😊
@Slush_
@Slush_ Жыл бұрын
To add on to that, this was our third time hosting the Olympics as a nation (Winter 1988 in Calgary and Summer 1976 in Montreal), but despite Canada being a historically strong Olympic performer (we're 12th in all time medal count, 5th in the Winter Olympics), we had failed to win a single gold medal on home soil in either previous Canadian Olympics. On our third try in 2010, not only did Alex Bilodeau break the curse, but we broke that total gold record which had stood since the USSR won 13 in 1976 (tied by Norway in 2002, Norway also recently broke that record with 16, cross country skiing has a lot of events 😂). But claiming that untied record with a home soil hockey gold? Pure magic.

A friend of mine was on an airplane coming home ....he said the pilot came on the intercom to give them updates as they were flying home to Toronto . He said the USA tied the game and the plane booed. 22 minutes later he came on and said "Fear not. Crosby in OT, we will have a golden landing" and the plane roared. Canada playing for Gold in International hockey draws the nation together. Hockey is our game...we shared it with the world but in the end; We see it as our birthright

One thing that added to the celebration that was missed. Just before the overtime goal, the US broke into the Canadian zone with a great play that forced Luongo to make a medal saving save for the ages. As the play was developing you could feel the entire country just drop in anticipation of the goal that would once again rob them the elusive gold medal. But Luongo came out of nowhere to make the save. The puck made it's way into the American zone and Canada scored to close the most successful Olympics (not just hockey, but all sports) in Canadian history. It truly was a moment I'll never forget.

We really had a blast with the Olympics. Vancouver was one huge party. Both the men's and women's hockey teams took the gold. Only time I recall any other hockey final so spellbinding for Canadians was the 1972 Canada-Russia series. Vancouver is my home town and we did the Games proud. Even curling was loud and enthusiastic. The hockey was especially sweet as it was against the arch rival US(a love/hate realtionship depending on situation) and on Canadian ice. The medals for our Games were stunning West Coast First Nations artwork. People often say we are polite and dull but scratch the surface and then you see the real Canucks. Brings tears to my eyes even now. It was one hell of a party!

The next day we had school all of the hockey boys which included me all started celebrating and having fun plus when we had to sing the national anthem before class started you could hear everybody sing it and add on top of it all of the first and second classes got canceled so we could all watch the game again. England created hockey. It was brought to Canada by England. It's still pretty much the same as it was back then. Sure some rule changes but over all cdns have monopolized the game. Olympics are country specific while the NHL or WHL are region and team specific as players can be from anywhere in the world. But Olympic games. The players want it but the league wants players insured by the IIHF or Olympics and there is the matter of use of Olympic content with the NHL which has always been at issue. I remember I was at a bar in Edmonton watching the game with a packed house. It was the most watched event in Canadian TV history. Just over half our population of the country watched this game, an estimated 16.7 million viewers. Hockey is Canada.

In order to have such a win, you need an opponent that makes it worth while. The game was a great game. The American goaltender was great! It was a nail biter! Especially since our two countries have such a rivalry when it comes to Olympic hockey! It is estimated that 2/3 of Canadians watched the golden goal! A great day, a great goal, a great Olympics for Canada!

Apparently, at 3:03, one of Sidney Crosby's gloves and his stick went over the glass into the stands, and I think Sidney was offering a big reward a few days after the match to get it back Turns out it ended up being misplaced by the equipment crew, and he managed to get them back a few days later

As a Canadian our expectation of any Team Canada hockey team is to win. Doesn't always happen but this was just so special because it was on our home soil and it was in overtime. Everyone remembers where they were and who they were with and singing the anthem afterwards. The whole country has that in common it seems

There are a few heart warming videos about the mic/sound system in canadian hockey rinks during the American Star Spangaled Banner failing, in which the entire crowd ends up filling in the missing audio. It's kind of cool, and shows no matter political differences, they're put aside when it comes to sports.

Those games in general (Olympics) was an amazing event for Canada, our greatest medal haul and we topped it off beating our rival in overtime. (So much so some suggested it was too much patriotism) I watched it at home with family on TV. It was way too cold for standing outside for 3 hours :D

If you could only show 1 game of hockey to someone who doesn't know the sport, this would be a good one. End to end action, amazing play, and drama. As a Canadian, I'm obviously biased, but it truly was exciting to watch. It was viewed by 16.6 million Canadians (population 33 million). I watched it a bar on Yonge St. (one of the main streets in Toronto which are pictured here), and joined the thousands on the street partying afterwards. To give it some context, imagine what London would be like if England won the World Cup.

When the Americans scored in the third I had to step outside, I live in a big city right on a busy street and there were no cars, zero! The whole city was quiet, I could see in peoples windows that everyone had the game on. After the winning goal the street went crazy, people running around with Maple Leaf Flags, screaming and hugging everyone. It was truly a defining experience to know that everyone felt the same exhilaration and relief. What a game, what a day and what a shared moment in time. Peace.

The footage of Vancouver right before the goal when it’s silent and then you just hear the noise swell! Chills! Beating the US was huge, it’s always the best to beat them. Winning the Olympic gold at home, massive! Even non-hockey fans were pulled in. This was one of my greatest memories growing up. I also remember the 2012 women's IIHF World Championships when Canada came back to tie it up in the 3rd against USA and it went to overtime where Canada won it. Canada was not favoured to win, so winning it was all the more memorable. But with 15mins left of the third all the teachers in our 1,200 person high school let us leave class and go to the gym or the library to watch the game with everyone else. The tying goal and overtime winner was celebrated like crazy. Letting all the students watch it together really made it memorable and it felt just as good as this one.

I live in Vancouver, but was in LA on my honeymoon for the semi-final game as well as this one. Watched the semi-final surrounded by every Canadian in the area at ESPN Disney, and then this one at a friend's place (another Canadian). We've won Olympic gold's before and since, but this one was special - both for being in Canada, being played against the US, going to overtime and having Sidney Crosby score off a pass from Jerome Iginla. Watching this now - I still get overcome with emotion; it was one of those transcendent moments that united the entire country.

We were watching it in our basement as a family and when Sid scored I grabbed my 13 year old son in my arms and swung him around for about 1 minute. Best ever Canadian sporting moment for me (born in Scotland and moved to Canada at 12 years old). The only other one that was close was winning the Olympic hockey gold in Salt Lake in 2002. It's funny, I was not worried when the US tied it up, I remember being very calm during the intermission before overtime as I just somehow knew we were going to win and I knew that winning in overtime would feel incredible.
