Each and every time I watch this video, the moment when the Men’s Pursuit Speed Skate team comes out of the corner in perfect synchronized fashion, I immediately start crying. The history leading to this Olympic is also critical to understanding its relevance. In the history of the Olympics there had been only one country that had hosted an had failed to win a gold. That was Canada and we did it twice; 1976 Montreal and 1988 Calgary. We never had much to cheer about in any Olympic save perhaps the heavily boycotted 1984 Los Angeles Games. It was quite embarrassing. The “Own the Podium” program changed all that with improved and better directed funding. The addition of sports where we could excel and the addition of NHL players made the lead up to Vancouver 2010 very promising. The result exceeded expectations in all aspects. The organization, Yanofsky’s inspiring tune, the celebratory Olympic village, the record setting number of Golds capped off with the most coveted prize of double hockey gold medals. Such an incredible event.

Great video. You have to go back a little further to see really appreciate the level of achievement. Canada is the only nation to host an Olympic and not win a gold medal on home soil (and we did it twice Montreal 1976 and Calgary 1988). Calgary was rock bottom given we are considered a winter nation the lack of medals was rather embarrassing. Soon after development of the “Own the Podium” program was put in place and we started to see the results on the world stage. The triumph of being a top winter sport nation was decades in the making. Seeing what the results did for the solidarity of Canada shows their is great value to having such success. An amazing performance by so many athletes but the “Golden Goal” was the fairy tale ending.

The one that always stuck out for me was Christine Nesbitt. Both at the time and now you could see in her eyes that she didn't think she gave her best performance and was surprised to have won. It was more relief than elation as she must have felt enormous pressure. I'm not sure she enjoyed the moment as much as she should have.
