Crosby’s edgework is insane - you should definitely look up some of the videos about it - and he’s also definitely got one of the best backhands in the business. But what makes him great in my opinion is while he’s not the best at any one thing he is the best all around player. He sees the game better than anyone and can absolutely carry a team. He’s the youngest Captain to win the Stanley Cup, he’s won three of them. He’s only one of 30 players to win the Triple Gold (Olympic gold, World Championships gold, and Stanley Cup) and he’s the only one to do it as Captain of all three teams. And my favorite stat is that last season he tied Geordie Howe at second for seasons where he had more than point-per-game. He is on pace this year to take that second place spot from Howe, and if he manages to finish out the rest of his contract at the same pace he will have had 20 consecutive years as more than a point per game player, beating out Wayne Gretzky who has 19.

Pens fan here I live about 65 miles west of Pittsburgh in Johnstown PA. Sid is the epidemy of one great Professional Hockey player. He stayed in Pittsburgh took less money. Is never in the news, internet for getting into trouble off the ice. Has his Little Penguins Charity, has his own suite at PPG Paints Arena for charities, disadvantaged kids. Is a complete player on the ice Offense/Défense. Is one of the best to ever play the game, gives 100% every game, every season. He takes like 1 week off after the season is over then he starts his off season training regiment. He has won the NHL MVP, Stanley Cup MVP, 3 Stanley Cup Championships, NHL Scoring title. the Golden Goal for team Canada in the Olympics and is a Gold Medalist in the World Championship for Canada.

Crosby grew up near my hometown and he was the golden boy even at 13. He was playing with 18 year olds. He used to practice shooting at his mother’s clothes dryer. Very kind, respectful fella that does a lot for the hockey kids in his hometown.

Crosby is and will forever be my favourite player of all time he is the reason why the penguins are my favourite team he has unbelievable talent and we both are from Nova Scotia Canada. I still remember when I was like 2 or 3 years old and hearing about this Crosby kid who was playing for the Rimouski Oceanic in the quebec major junior hockey league and just being wowed by his talents, my brain knew that whoever drafted him would be my favourite team.

That bit about "How much chicken can you eat" is one of the many catchphrases former voice of the Penguins for decades, Mike Lange, used to say after the Pens would score. Other gems included "Michael, Michael, motorcycle," "Scratch my back with a hacksaw," "He beat him like a rented mule," and one I have on a t-shirt, "Get in the fast lane, Grandma, this bingo game is ready to roll." They weren't really meant to make sense, just be fun. Although Mike did always say when the Pens had locked up a win, "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has just left the building." He's retired now but I really miss him. He is a Pittsburgh icon.

Crosby is known for being a well rounded player. One of the best 2-way players of all time, not a huge goal scorer, but he gets a lot of assists, a bit more of a play-maker. In hockey, they track 1st, and second assists, and I'm not a huge football/soccer fan but hockey seems to value assists a bit more. If Crosby was known for a shot, its his backhand.

There's a vid from a Penguins practice drill thing where he snapped a hard backhander to the roof over Fleury's shoulder and exploded his water bottle :D He's the best backhand shooter probably ever. Before McDavid got going, he was widely regarded as the best active player. In terms of individual output + team success, he still is. And he has the most games (and most goals) against the Flyers, because they're from the same state (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Flyers) and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Penguins))... That's one of the significant rivalries in the league. The New York Rangers and Islanders are up there too followed by the Washington Capitals, because they're all in the same Division and thus play each other more than other teams. The teams he has the least games and goals against are Western Conference teams (Penguins are in the East) and the two newest franchises (Vegas Golden Knights, 5yrs and Seattle Kraken, 2nd yr) and until a few years ago (and during the covid precaution seasons), you played division rivals a lot more than teams from the other Conference. Now it's 3 or 4 vs. Division, 3 vs. other Division in the same Conference and 2 or 3 vs. other Conference.

The Penguins/Flyers rivalry is strong. Games are often referred to as turnpike games as Pittsburgh and Philly are on opposite sides of the state. And Sid definitely steps it up a notch for games against the Flyers, especially if it's in Philly. The Philadelphia crowd definitely does not like him as the boos start coming any time he touches the puck. It just gives him that much more motivation to put it in the back of the net. Even my wife can't help but appreciate Sid. (She grew up in NJ outside of Philly and is a huge Flyers fan while I'm a diehard Penguins fan having grown up in the western part of the state.) As for the "How much fried chicken can you eat?" commentary you were asking about. That would be the amazing Mike Lange, one of the best commentators in sports history. His Lange-isms are legendary. I'm pretty sure you can find compilations of Mike Lange calls. He was a commentator with the Penguins for 46 years and is also in the Hockey Hall of Fame. So glad to have had the chance to listen to him from the 80s until he retired. They had a Mike Lange night after his retirement where Penguins player Evgeni Malkin (injured at the time, so not playing) brought him a milkshake as one of his sayings when Malkin would make an incredible play was "Make me a milkshake Malkin!" It's always a good night when "It's a hockey night in Pittsburgh!"

Pens fan here! Thanks for reacting to these goals by our Captain. I think of Ovetchkin and McDavid as goal-scorers first. Ovetchkin is going to break Gretzky's record before he's done playing - that's not a question of *if*, it's *when.* He is a machine. McDavid is an unstoppable force of nature that racks up points by the boatload. When trying to describe Crosby, I think of him as a great 200-foot player who sees the game in a way few do and possesses a very high hockey IQ. Now in the later part of his career, I'd argue his primary role is that of play-maker. People talk about his enormous force of will, his high compete level, and how relentlessly hard he works. Former NHL coach Mike Babcock has dubbed Crosby a "serial winner." Pittsburgh fan and incredibly lucky to have back-to-back two of the top 5 players ever. In the mid-80s to the early 2000s (with lost time due to injuries and cancer treatment) we had the most talented player ever to play, Mario Lemieux--for my money the best ever, or respectfully, 1b to Gretzky's 1a. Then we lucked out again with Sidney Crosby, who at 35 years old is still killin' it (despite having missed more than 2 full seasons with injuries).

There's a reason that they called him "Magic Man," and "Lucky 13." "Datsyukian Deke" became a phrase that described an amazing move or dangle. I am a Detroit native, so I may be biased, but you should check out Niklas Kronwall (biggest hits) and Bob Probert (greatest enforcer ever) The Red Wings were also home to Gordie Howe, the great one, who played in 5 different decades. A "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" was 1 goal, 1 assist, and 1 fight.

Crosby is an all around player his goals are often not his best show but instead it’s the work he puts in to get that goal which is the real impressive stuff. He is known as one of, if not, the best at edge work, and is feared by basically every player for his insane strength not only to be able to stay on his feet but also to be able to take powerful one handed shoots and crazy backhanders as well

Also, because he is so extremely good at everything hockey he is literally a goalies nightmare. People sometimes think goalies only really stop pucks but in reality they are extremely smart, they know players and will try to force (when one on one) the specific player to there backhand (cuz backhands in basically all cases are weaker then forehand) it’s not like that for Crosby goalies hate his backhand. So a goalie going up against a player with good forehand and backhand might want to force that player in close forcing them to stick hand and use there edges (again in crosbys case goalies don’t want thing cuz he has insane edge work, and great stick handing. After all this you might thing oh the goalie has no chance but the goalie could work with their defenders to force Crosby to maybe make a pass but again it’s important that Crosby is insanely strong and it’s hard for defenders to take the puck from him. BUT WITH ALM THIS if a defender or goalie finally puts him in the situation where he can’t get a goal it doesn’t matter because his hockey iq is crazy and by that time he’s either drawn multiple defenders and has now passed it to a teammate for an open goal, or he has grabbed all the attention of the goalie and now can pass it to any one on his line to slot the puck, he is truly great and terrorizes teams the the leagues best goalies alike

The best football analogy I can give you is Crosby and Ovechkin are the Messi and Ronaldo of hockey respectively. Crosby has unreal skill, playmaking and makes the game look easy like Messi. Mcdavid is similar to Mbappe, few years into the league but looks unreal already.

Ovechkin and Crosby were both drafted first overall in 2004 and 2005 so their careers have been linked from the beginning. Ovechkin is probably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history (he’s going to break the record for most goals which no one ever thought would be broken). Sid is one of the best all-around players in the game. They play different games, but they’re both regarded as being some of the best to ever do it. McDavid is a little different because he wasn’t drafted until 2015, ten years after Ovi and Sid. At the end of his career we’ll see how he stacks up against the best, but he’s certainly the best player on the ice right now. He’s in a league of his own. If you want to look at the best goalie currently playing, check out Andrei Vasilevskiy. He’s widely regarded as the best goalie on the most consistent basis. He even won the playoff MVP award two years ago when the Lightning won their second Cup in a row.

McDavid has the luxury of playing after the game opened up. Crosby came in at the peak of the "we hate offense" era of the NHL. I'd love to see McDavid out on the ice and have the double-line pass be illegal. All that speed would mean basically nothing.

I'm sure you can tell that he's known for his backhand. He has arguably the best in the league, even as an aging player. But his puck awareness is top notch at well. He somehow knows where the puck is going to be at all times. One of my fav goals of his was where he caught the puck from a pass across ice with his back skate, kicked it up to himself without breaking stride.

The first goal of this vid is on his great friend and former teammate Marc Andre Fleury, Sid has great hands, doesn't take too many slap shot a lot of wrist shots but he has one of the best ever back hand shots in NHL history. He also shoot down on one knee a lot because his blade is not curved so he can shoot the back hand shots, so to get the elevation on his wrist shots, close in he needs to go to one knee. He is also a phenomenal passer

Pittsburgh native here. I was 22 when they drafted Crosby. He’s the most complete hockey player ever. He has improved his game perpetually. If it wasn’t for him missing whole seasons with brain and neck injuries, he’d have hundreds of more points. All these slick goals, but he’s really a setup player. His assist game is ridiculous, he can make a marginal player look like star. But it’s not every player. If you haven’t watched Mario Lemieux play hockey, you should. Mario was arguably better than Gretzky. But his career was cut short due to chronic health issues. He had major back problems, there are stories about other players tying his skates and him scoring five or six points that night. In the middle of his career he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The day he had his last radiation treatment, the man flew 300 miles (482 km) to Philly, and played the same night. And they gave him a standing ovation, I’m Philly! I don’t know how to quantify that. Like pick your biggest rival and imagine cheering when their captain took the field, because he was just that guy. He saved Hockey in Pittsburgh. The team was bankrupt and he bought it, he got the team a new arena. He let them from being moved. Of all the great athletes that ever played in Pittsburgh, and there are many, Lemieux is by far the most significant, and the most dominating. Mario embarrassed people. Mario could make the best players in the league look like amateur nobody’s. It’s filthy how great he was. Crosby is great at hockey. Lemieux made it look effortless.

Sid is definitely in the top 10 all time greatest. He is top 3 in my opinion, just after Gretzky and Lemieux. Sids not known for his scoring, although his shot is still elite, it’s the little things that make him great. His puck protection, board battles, passing, playmaking, defensive work, etc. Ovi has way more goals than Sid, but they have about the same number of points (goals+assists), even though Sids played about 200 games less than Ovi due to some concussion issues. Ovi is the greatest goal scorer, but Sid is better at almost everything else. Sid has won the Stanley cup 3 times and Olympic gold 2 times. He was also the youngest captain in NHL history to lead his team to winning the Stanley cup. The penguins have made the playoffs every year since Crosby was drafted in 2005, except his rookie year. He has had a little help by a teammate named Geno Malkin (one of the most underrated players ever due to playing on the same team as Crosby, you should check him out as well) Penguins fans have been SPOILED by Mario Lemieux, Sid the kid, and malkin. Part of what makes him so great is that he never stops working. If you ever watch a penguins game you will understand why he is so highly regarded. He basically never mishandles or turns over the puck, and he is super intelligent with positioning and making plays. I'm a fan of the Washington Capitals, the rivals of the Penguins. The old funny bumper sticker is that my two favorite teams are the Capitals and whoever is playing the Penguins. While I don't detest them (say, for example, like I detest the Pittsburgh Steelers...), I hate when they beat us, and I am delighted when we beat them. This is all to say, while I'm no fan of Crosby, the guy is undeniably talented and I respect him for the player he is. As a lifelong Pens fan, you should really look at other highlights to fully understand the brilliance of Crosby. He's a great goal-scorer, but that's not what he's best known for. His puck-protection, play-making, edge-work and backhand are probably his most elite skills in the league. xXLaflammeXx makes some excellent compilations, if you wanna search for them. Sid's hockey-IQ is very high, and he's a clutch player too. Despite missing the majority of his prime playing years due to concussion issues, he's had a surprisingly lengthy career and has sustained his high-level of play. McDavid is the new King of the league, but the old guys like Sid and Ovi are still competing near the top. It's a blessing to get to watch. Plus those two players came into the league at the same time and really saved the NHL, which was struggling after a lockout season in 2004. Much like Bird & Magic did for the NBA, Sid and Ovi's rivalry was the engine that brought the NHL back from shadows.

One of his unique skills is his ability to protect/control the puck--he will go into a corner to try to get a puck against 2 or 3 from the other team and come away with it--and then maintain possession of the puck for long periods under duress. He is 5'11' 200lbs and his legs are like NFL running back's legs--tree trunks.

Sid has been in the NHL since he was 18. He’s been with the Pittsburgh Penguins his entire career. He is 35 now and has lost a step but is still an incredible player. He not only scores goals but his playmaking ability is amazing. He doesn’t have as many goals as Ovechkin but has more assists. And he’s been injured too so he’s lost a lot of time where Ovechkin hasn’t lost much time at all. Sid’s had concussions, broken jaw, core surgery and more. He was very fast in the beginning but defenders and goalies are getting better. Just tonight, he didn’t score but got the puck from the defender and made a beautiful pass for a goal. I love his dekes and dangles. His backhand is very good and he has incredible hand/eye coordination so he’s batted many pucks out of the air and in for goals. There are great videos out on his dangles and footwork. Worth watching!

Massive Pens fan. Massive Crosby fan. 'Syd The Kid' has so much talent and is so unselfish with the puck. He compares to those you mention in a different way. Syd is known for his incredible passing skills and setting up plays, as much as scoring the goal. Ovechkin is known more as a scorer....not so much his passing or overall puck handling. Conor McDavid is a younger player but is often said to be the new Crosby as he has a similar skillset. Syd is an easy first round Hall of Famer when the time comes.

Honestly, while Crosby has some truly insane goals it's not even what he's most known and praised for. That would be his ability to elevate the skill level of anyone he plays with. He has legit played with players who on any other team would be borderline demoted into lower leagues and made them look like all-stars. He even got a player, Chris Kunitz, onto the Canadian Olympic team simply because they played on the same line. Hands down one of the best players in the league today, and you could definitely make an argument for top 3/5 all time as well.

Love the comments on this video. Sydney Crosby is your favourite hockey player's favourite hockey player. He does so many things at an elite level. And he's had all the big moments in his career, winning Olympic gold for Canada, 3 Stanley Cups, beating his childhood favourite Canadiens in OT the first time he played them, crushing the rival Flyers his entire career after they besmirched him in his rookie year, saving the penguins franchise from relocation. He's got a wonderful audiobook on his rookie year too.

There as been a debate in the last few year about who is better between Crosby and McDavid...they pretty much are 2 generational players but from a difference of a decade in terms of era, Crosby being from the 2000 and McDavid the 2010 to right now...Bedard might be the one for the 2020. They are so different and yet so dominant. Crosby being essentially the perfect center who does everything, score, pass, play powerplay, penalty kill, good leader, good physique and clutch player. McDavid on the other hand, has some of the same skills but is smaller and yet he is more of a ultimate speed demon who think the game at insane speed and adapt super fast...Protection of the puck vs high speed, very difficult to choose. Can wait to see what Bedard is gonna bring...I hope my home team of Montreal land him !

In hockey as in soccer (football) some goals are scored off the post, they are some of the best goals but what makes them even better is the ding sound when the puck hits the post or crossbar before going in. Watch Crosby edgework video, impossible to take the puck from him. Also scoring on the backhand is probably twice-three times as hard than shooting on forehand, he makes it look easy but it’s like scoring on off foot in soccer

Wayne Gretzky is known as the greatest hockey player who ever played. He was a gentleman and was very talented. His dad taught him to play in his backyard rink. Gretzky was very young when he began his career. There are several records that Gretzky achieved that have not been broken. He played for the Edmonton Oilers and was very much better than Connor MacDavid. Gretzky would be a fantastic film to watch.

The 1972 Russia /Canada series is known to have changed the world. It was the first time a nono-communist team was permitted to play in Russia. The games were played in both countries, Canada and Russia. Students in schools were given the time to watch the games. The tournament is known as the beginning of the downfall of communism in Russia. A very interesting time in history.

The Penguins and Flyers have been bitter rivals going back to the 80s. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are both in Pennsylvania separated by 300 miles of the PA Turnpike. One of the greatest rivalries in sports. In Crosby's first game againt the Flyers, they knocked 2 of his teeth out with a dirty hit, but he then scored the game-winning goal in overtime. You asked what he’s known for. You saw some of it here and picked up on it : his willingness to drive to the net and ability to score in high traffic, his backhand (arguably the best backhand in hockey ever), and his supernatural vision and reaction time. But ironically what he’s most famous for is not his scoring, it’s his playmaking - as great as a scorer he is, he’s an even greater playmaker and he’s probably one of the hardest working players to ever put on skates. As to where he ranks - definitely top 5. I think McDavid is better (and I’m a lifelong Penguins fan) but McDavid has physical advantages that Crosby (who is smaller doesn’t have). In terms of sheer work ethic and willingness to pay the price of going to these very high traffic areas, I think he is simply unequaled. Unfortunately, he’s has the list of injuries to show for it…

If it weren't for the concussions, he would probably be close to 1800 points. I really hope he can get to 2000 before he hangs up his skates, but that seems unlikely. I think Mcdavid bests him in terms of attacking and speed, but Crosby is a better all-around player. Let's also not forget that Crosby played in an era (2005-2013 or so) with way fewer goals scored.

Crosby is the best player of his generation. He's arguably one of the top 10 best players of all time. He's much better than McDavid, Ovi, Datsyuk, etc. But watching a highlight video, you'd never know. He doesn't score a lot of flashy goals. He has some pretty ones, to be sure, but he doesn't dazzle like McDavid or just ooze offensive brilliance like Ovi. It's the fact he does EVERY. SINGLE. THING. on the ice with excellence. Plus, he makes his entire team infinitely better. That's not something a lot of those other guys can say.

Crosby has a great backhand, but he has no real weaknesses. Except age, Father Time has reached out for him, hasn't got a good grip yet, tho... After a while he seemed to get experimental and tried new things, batting goals out of mid air, hitting goals off of goalie's back from behind the goal line, one handed shots.... He hates giving up the puck, he has it glued to his stick, he is also superior when it comes to skating and edge work. If you have any interest in Sports Medicine you will be shocked by Crosby who has tailored his workouts to build up his lower body to be so strong his teammates actually called him 'Creature'. His play is very much geared to his build. He is very workman like, solid and dependable and one of the greats. He has very focused hockey sense, has a talent for predicting what is happening faster than most. So he anticipates most plays from his team and the opposing team.

Not a penguins fan but I do think Crosby is an absolute beauty and a total beast on the ice, I don't like the amount of whining he used to do. He's matured a lot as he's aged and he's no longer like that and he's still an amazing player and one of the greatest ever. Despite my hatred of Pittsburgh, I have to give him credit for being an amazing player.
