I played baseball from age 3 till I was 23. I’ll never forget when I was like 6 or 7 years old, I was at a Cincinnati Reds game with my dad. The Reds were down by 12 runs in the 8th inning and came back to win the game with a walk off. It was awesome and I learned something that night. Just because you’re winning by a lot, NEVER take your foot off the gas. Because your opponent isn’t going to. I hate this “rule”. Makes zero sense

Similar story. I was about 14 at a Reds game where they rallied in the last inning or two to come back from a massive deficit and win the game. I'll never forget high fiving the complete strangers all around me in the 9th as they sealed up the win. This would have been around 2001 or so, but regardless, the idea that teams would risk the same thing happening to them in order to be chivalrous or whatever this is is mind numbing. Glad it's dying out. Edit: Semi-related, but I don't find the video's 'they don't want to offend the pitcher' thing all that compelling tbh--I think it's more just about not pissing off managers and tight-ass teammates, and a fear of upsetting the 'old guard' so to speak. Pitchers get thrown out for obvious stuff like that anymore and I don't think MLB batters are as timid as that theory makes them seem.

I'm a Phillies fan. Last year, the Braves broke my heart in a game by scoring 7 in the 9th to come back and win. No lead is safe. But even if the lead was 20, it should be game on for a batter as long as the losing team is still putting a legitimate pitcher in the game. If the manager doesn't want to blow up a pitcher's ERA late in the game, if they _really_ care about the precise magnitude of how bad their players should feel after being blown out, then put in a position player. Make it clear your team is giving up if you want to be treated with kid gloves.

I saw a video where an MLB player goes over a document of the unwritten rules someone made with some youtube commentators and he said "It just seems like most of these rules are to keep pitchers happy." And that convinced me that most of the unwritten rules are dumb. And I think most of the reason players follow them is that they don't want to get beaned by a pitch. It'd be one thing if pitchers didn't try to exploit it, but most of the time they think the batter's gonna take whatever they throw, so they will just throw a fastball in the zone and get a free strike.

To your comment about seeing alot of 3-0 where they don't swing. A lot of that is tactical decisions by the team. You would rather take the free chance at a walk and still be up in the count vs getting out, especially if there is a runner on first and you could risk a double play.

"Comfortable lead" is one of the most dangerous statements in sports, if your goal is to win that is. There's a reason why Bill Belichick always keeps his foot on the gas and runs up the score no matter how big a lead he has (with 8 Super Bowl rings to show for it) - all it takes is showing a little mercy to the other team when you have that nice cushy lead for you to get burned by the previously unthinkable comeback

I purchased the tickets, but we were late and had missed the top half of the first inning. When we were seated the score was 8-0 for the (same) Texas Rangers over the Red Sox. The game ended up as a 16-8 Texas win. Eight runs in an inning is unusual, but will happen a few times every season. Imo, this is a foolish unwritten rule. @proteuswest1084

The unwritten rules basically boil down to what actions can and will upset a team to the point where they may throw at you. Those actions that are typically frowned upon generally fall into two categories: actions that hurt people's feelings and actions that can hurt people physically (like sliding in to a base and bringing your cleats up). I am all for baseball players and teams taking care of their own business when the other team does something that is unsafe, but most of the "hurt feelings" ones are pretty ridiculous. Of the "hurt feelings" unwritten rules, the one I probably agree with the most is that you don't try to bunt your way on in the middle of a no-hitter or a perfect game, but even then, I can think of a lot of situations where that's not that unpalatable, especially in a close game where you need base runners. The NFL used to be a lot more proactive on disallowing players from celebrating their accomplishments, and I used to really hate it, but as I've gotten older and those rules have gotten more relaxed, I realize that it's not that important and I'd rather see players having fun if they want to. I am always going to respect folks like Barry Sanders who always just handed the ball to the official afterwards, but I can appreciate Deion Sanders or Terrell Owens for the entertainment value they provided, and how a lot of storylines were built around their bombastic personas. It would be better for baseball if they let their players have fun and show their personalities.

I've been watching baseball for 35 years, I've never heard of an unwritten rule that you can't swing 3-0 when you're up by 6 after 6... shit... the Pirates gave up 4 leads in the past week of 5 or 6 runs after the 5th inning.... so there's no way in hell that I wouldn't be trying to hit a bad pitch hard at any time in the game. Now... coaches typically don't want most guys swinging on 3-0 pitches because they don't want them to swing at a bad pitch when the pitcher is obviously struggling to get the ball over the plate. So you see a lot guys taking pitches down the middle on 3-0, but... good hitters typically have the green light to swing on 3-0.

Out of all American sports, Baseball has the most and the most annoying unwritten rules. And most of them involve not hurting a pitcher's feelings. Can't celebrate a home run, can't bunt with a huge lead, can't steal bases with a huge lead, can't try to hit with a huge lead, etc ,etc. Like Jomboy said, pitchers are the biggest babies in all of sports. When they have a good day, they can celebrate and act the fool on the mound. But if they have a bad day, everybody else has to curb their enthusiasm in order to not upset the pitcher because he might snap and throw baseballs at your head. If pitchers can dish it out when the going is good, they should be able to take it when the going is bad. Tatis's manager and teammates should have had his back

I never just took a straight pitch unless it was strategy and i never pitched a ball thinking the hitter will not swing. To clarify, the "unwritten rule" only applies late game with a big lead. The reason why you're seeing it a lot under normal circumstances is because when it's a 3-0 count you GENERALLY want to try to get a walk, and force the pitcher to throw a strike before you swing. It's not an unwritten rule free strike for the pitcher, it's the batter saying hey you've thrown 3 balls in a row so you're going to have to show me you can throw a strike or I'm taking the walk.

I'm going to go against the majority here and say that i like the unwritten rules of baseball - they are a part of the tradition and the culture of the sport. What's funny to me is that sometimes there is a grey area where nobody is really sure what the unwritten rule is - for instance - sometimes a hitter makes a clutch homerun - and in the eyes of the pitcher - is too happy - celebrates too overtly - typically by flipping the bat afterwards with a little too much "zing" on it - thus possibly violating the unwritten rule of "thou shalt not celebrate a homerun too loudly." Of course - this sin is in the eye of the beholder - and this schism is where you get an increase in tension between the two sides. Just part of the game. Part of the culture of baseball. But i'm glad you guys are studying the game at this level - it's fun to watch. Thanks for posting this one.

I do think we were all taught to take 3-0 primarily because pitchers growing up might not locate that 3-0 fastball and we could force a walk. In the big leagues, it’s much more likely he’ll lay one in there if he assumes the batter isn’t swinging-and then before you know it you foul one off and you’re 3-2…

7:16 theres an old saying that "a walks just as good as a hit" so on 3-0 alot of hitters are told to take the next pitch as they have a chance at a free base. Pitchers know this and therefore buckle down and throw an absolute volley ball down the middle to help themselves get back in the count. Unfortunate, since most batters are in "take mode" they're just not ready to swing at 95mph+ even if it is right down the middle.

IMO most unwritten rules are dumb, but the spirit of the rules, “don’t be a dick,” is fine. One unwritten rule I actually like is “Don’t bunt to try to break up a perfect game/no hitter.” To me it’s okay to do this if it’s a close game and you think bunting is the best way to get on base (you play to win, after all). Otherwise, dropping a bunt down trying to catch the 3rd baseman napping or to force a bad defensive play to break up a potentially historic achievement is kind of a dick move.

Jimmy sums up this particular unwritten rule pretty well. It's all rather dumb. There's a bunch of unwritten rules that old heads in baseball like to adhere to and most of them revolve around, as Jimmy said, not pissing off pitchers when they're getting lit up. Some of the other ones not mentioned in this video are attempting to steal a base when up big or bunting for a base hit when up big. They're all fine and good in my men's league but for paid professionals at the highest level? Nah. That one Tweet from Trevor Plouffe, former Twins infielder and now member of Jomboy Media, speaks to what Damo was talking about with regard to not seeing anyone swing at 3-0 pitches. It is not very common in today's game, even amongst some of the best hitters when it probably should be, given that the pitcher usually just grooves a fastball down the middle. I know part of it is that they don't want to swing at ball 4 and look dumb or hit the ball in play for an out on a pitch where you would have had at least 2 more strikes to play with, but still. My least favorite unwritten rule is any that involves a pitcher throwing at a player intentionally. I don't care if the hitter even hurt or threw at one of YOUR players. Turn the other cheek and don't be TRYING to hurt anyone.

I'm a fan of "unwritten rules" when they're pinned to respect and sportsmanship, but this one baffles me. It essentially says that under a specific (and VERY common) situation, you're expected to disregard the fundamentals of clean, competitive play. Batters who are down 3-0 in the count strike out, ground out, fly out, etc. all the time - in every game. A pitcher who has pitched himself into a 3-0 hole shouldn't be allowed a freebie right down the pipe. . . and footballers (the metric variety of football) shouldn't flop around like they're being attacked by hornets with tasers at the slightest touch. Not sure those two concepts are at all related, beyond the fact that I dislike them both.

This incident with Tatis was kind of a catalyst for more players starting to swing 3-0 more often. To paraphrase Brewers outfielder Chritian Yelich after he hit a homerun on a 3-0 count, these days, pitchers are so good that the fastball you get on a 3-0 count might be the only hittable pitch that you get in that at bat. That said, most players, in most situations, still won't swing 3-0, not because of any unwritten rule, but because they're looking to reach base in any way they can. If you've just seen three straight pitches out of the zone, and you believe that the pitcher was trying to throw strikes and missed, you might start to think that the pitcher could be struggling with his command. If you think that the pitcher might be having trouble throwing strikes, what's the harm in seeing another pitch and maybe drawing an easy walk? Another aspect to the unwritten rule is that you don't want to waste an at bat where you're ahead in the count. If you swing 3-0 and hit a routine ground ball to short, you've bailed out the pitcher by gifting him an out when he was in a bad situation.

These "unwritten rules" can be annoying. If you don't want the other team to score then maybe you should play well enough to stop them. The problem in baseball is that there's no clock to run out. In most of our sports it's easy to change your play calling and work the clock to accomplish both goals of 1) not running up the score and 2) improving your chances of winning the game. With no clock to run, it's a lot harder in baseball, especially when the other team is playing poorly. Have you ever tried to throw a game to a little kid but the task ends up being harder than you thought? Sometimes they just won't let you let them win. And if you're too obvious about it they still get mad at you. Think this only applies to little kids? You'd be wrong. Back in 1991 in week 1 of the NFL season, Washington blew Detroit out 45-0. It could have been worse. Late in the 4th quarter they were driving the ball using pretty much only running plays. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs didn't want to run the score up, so he had his team kneel on the ball inside Detroit's 5 yard line, run a lot of clock, and give the ball back to the Lions. The game was over, so why rub their noses in it, right? Well Lions linebacker Chris Spielman didn't see it that way. He saw the gesture as disrespectful and was VERY loud about it in the media. Seems like a "darned if you do, darned if you don't" situation to me. Sure, in football, maybe stop calling trick plays and don't throw deep when you're up by 40 in the 4th quarter. Take your time getting to the line of scrimmage. Get the game over as quickly as possible. In basketball, run the shot clock down every time down if you're up by 20 with 2 minutes left and maybe stop throwing up 3 pointers. In hockey, since there's no shot clock just see how long you can hold the puck if you're up by 5 goals late in the game. Play keep away. But in baseball? There's no limit to how many runs the other team can score in an inning. There's no clock. Swing the heck away.

I paid to see my favorite team win by a million runs if possible. It's not like this is Little League. There is no "mercy rule" in the MLB for reason. And there's no tying either. MLB should be played until somebody wins or somebody dies. And the sky is the limit when it comes to running up the score. It really makes these guys seem terribly soft when they complain after the game.

In general players are taught to take the pitch at 3-0 regardless of score. It makes sense as any contact can lead to an out, while you are one ball away from a free base. My high school coach told us to look for our exact “home run pitch” on 3-0 and take anything else. If you swung on 3-0 you’d better make good contact for a hit at bare minimum or you’d get an earful. As far as I’m concerned that’s what Tati’s did here and I’d have done the same.

Long and short of it is that the unwritten rules don't really make sense to most fans nowadays, and even a lot of diehard MLB fans will go on rants about how stuff like this is 'killing the game.' I think these rules are ridiculous myself, and there's an element of weird condescension (it almost feels weirdly classist to me in a way) about them that irks me, as a fan of many other sports where this sort of thinking is unthinkable. Regardless, it's something that'll change and/or die out over time--the snake person and under fanbase has made their views pretty clear.

So my thought is this, I like the unwritten rule, but I believe I'm in favor for any retaliation thay may happen on the field as a result of breaking that unwritten rule. Now thats as far as I think it needs to go. No one should ever have to apologize after the game for breaking g an unwritten rule, that's crazy. The suspensions were fine however, because the ordering of throwing an errant pitch at a batter as a form of retaliation is breaking an actual written rule. It may be the natural consequence of breaking g the unwritten rule, but no where is it written that retaliation must happen.

7:16 theres an old saying that "a walks just as good as a hit" so on 3-0 alot of hitters are told to take the next pitch as they have a chance at a free base. Pitchers know this and therefore buckle down and throw an absolute volley ball down the middle to help themselves get back in the count. Unfortunately, since most batters are in "take mode" they're just not ready to swing at 95mph+ even if it is right down the middle.

Of course it's an idiotic rule, especially in baseball because of course there is no time limit so the other team can always come back if they just don't make outs. No team should ever just give up on scoring more runs, I don't care if they're up by 40-0. Or if you believe the game is over and your team can't come back, just forfeit the game then and there. The crazy thing is that a 7 run lead with 2 innings to go isn’t even THAT safe of a lead. The chances of a comeback are very slim but not slim enough that you should stop trying to win. Teams have scored 7 or more in two innings plenty of times before. The rule is stupid, I don’t even care what kind of lead you have. The idea that a bunch of professionals are supposed to stop trying just because you couldn’t keep up is embarrassing. Also, the reason you’ve seen so many 3-0 pitches not being swung at is mostly not because of some unwritten rule, it’s mostly because most hitters are taught not to swing 3-0 unless the pitch is absolutely right where they want it because even if you take a strike, you’re still firmly in control at 3-1. If you swing at a 3-0 pitch and make an out, it’s sort of like giving the pitcher an easy out when you as the hitter had all the leverage.

At 8:00 It’s not always when they are 3-0 that they will get fastballs right down the middle and not swing. It’s if they are winning by let’s say 8+ runs and it’s near the end of the game then they will abide by the unwritten rule and not swing to be “courteous” so if the score is 3-3 and the count is 3-0 they are going to swing and not just let that fastball go straight down the middle for no reason. They have to up by a lot and the game is near the end for this rule to be used.

Most of the time when a batter takes a fastball right down the middle on 3-0 it’s less of an unwritten rules thing and more just good strategy. Even well-hit balls can result in outs a lot of the time so the last thing a batter wants to do is swing at a pitch they shouldn’t have that would have been ball 4, and get out instead. Because of that a lot of batters will just choose not to swing before the pitch is even thrown, and since most batters do that, the pitcher will just throw a fastball for a strike. Occasionally the batter will try to surprise the pitcher by swinging since the pitcher probably has a false sense of security that they can throw it right down the middle. This is risky but can result in a home run. This is where the unwritten rules come in, apparently doing this in a blowout is classless or something. It’s idiotic. Just wanted to clarify that most of the 3-0 fastballs down the middle that you see, the batter isn’t choosing not to swing because of sportsmanship, it’s usually just to avoid making a really bad mistake and turning a walk into an out
@LiveFromThePorcelainPalace

They take a fastball down the middle to avoid making an out and take the walk? I'm not getting your logic here.
@chrisb.8758
@chrisb.8758 Жыл бұрын
@@LiveFromThePorcelainPalace they don’t know it’s going to be down the middle. Even pitchers trying to throw a fastball down the middle will often miss and throw it for a ball. About 40% of 3-0 pitches are thrown outside of the strike zone. Many of those are pitches where the pitcher was just trying to throw a strike and still missed anyway. So the batters usually take the pitch instead of risking accidentally swinging at ball 4 and making weak contact, especially since even if it *is* down the middle, then the count is now 3-1 which is still a very favorable count. Especially early in the inning it’s not usually going to be worth the risk of swinging and potentially giving up your chance at a walk. The most important job of a hitter is getting on base. The chance of getting on base once the count reaches 3-0 is around 70%. Even most hard hit balls result in outs more often than that, which is why swinging is a huge risk. If you’re going to do it you better be damn sure you’re going to guess right and hit the ball hard for extra bases. If it’s 2 outs with a runner or two on base, the math changes dramatically and the value of a walk relative to a home run is a lot lower. But flying out on a 3-0 pitch with no outs is basically the worst thing a hitter can do.

my favorite NHL unwritten nhl rules are 1. You don't celebrate when your team is up by a lot, if you watch a blowout you'll see the goal celebrations get more and more tame. 2. You never ever shoot after the whistle/horn.. Sometimes NBA players will take a practice shot, but if you do that in hockey you will get all 5 guys after you immediately In football/soccer I always loved if you have the ball and there's an injured opposing player but play hasn't stopped, you kick the ball out so they can get attention.. and then the 2nd part where the team with the injured player throws it in to the opposition on purpose

There is just no logic to this unwritten rule. It's apparently perfectly fine to leave your best hitter in a 20 run game, and it is perfectly fine for him to try to hit home runs in a 20 run game, but if in that situation the count gets to 3-0, he is supposed to take a strike for some reason. I imagine this goes back many decades to when very few batters swung at 3-0 pitches in general. But the reason to take 3-0 pitches is because a walk can help your team, not to avoid running up the score. If your team keeps getting walks they could run up the score even more.

I had, and apparently I was mistaken that all good hitters were told this, a green light on a 3-0 count, but I better make contact, it better be a strike, and I could lose that green light if I consistently made bad decisions with it. The unwritten rules are stupid. All of them result from and are retaliations from being butt hurt. They sometimes make up unwritten rules when it is convenient. I forget who the pitcher was (he was a NY Yankee I think) who got butt hurt and made up an unwritten rule about a hitter crossing the mound on his way back to the dugout. My least favorite unwritten rule has to do with batters and/or admiring their home run and/or then flipping their bat in celebration. There’s a school of thought that generally a batter won’t swing 3-0, because if a pitcher just missed his spot on you three times on a row and they’re all balls, the batter is pretty much challenging the pitcher to show that he can throw a strike. On the other hand, there’s a decent chance the pitcher is going to be under pressure to groove you a meatball down the middle.
