Firefighters are heroes in their communities. They risk their own lives tackling flames to keep us all safe. But the biggest risk they face on duty is not the fire itself.
The biggest risk is having a heart attack.
That's why a ground-breaking BHF-funded research project at the University of Edinburgh is looking at the combined effects of exposure to 'extreme air pollution', heat and physical stress on the hearts of firefighters while tackling fires.
The unique partnership between BHF-funded scientists and Lothian and Borders Fire Service will shed new light on the link between firefighting and heart attacks.
