This is one of the reasons we NEVER let the flag touch the ground. EVER!! Thanks to your mom for her expression of caring. Much appreciated. As we say in Texas; Be safe. If you didn't know, Texas was an independent country that chose to join America. The only country to do so in the history of the United States.

...ever heard of the Kingdom of Hawai'i? Arguably, the Republic of Vermont as well. It was self-declared as an independent nation, but I don't believe any countries ever recognized them as such. But, that actually puts Vermont and Texas on similar footing, as Mexico never acknowledged Texas' independence.

@@richdiddens4059 The Bear Flag Republic being the name adopted by Californians after they declared independance from Mexico, during the Mexican-American War. Many (but not all) of the revolutionaries were American immigrants who had the same legitimate complaints about the Mexican governor as the non-immigrants.. For 25 days in 1846 (June 15 to July 9) this breakaway state from Mexico militarily controlled an area north of San Francisco, in and around what is now Sonoma County. It was never recognized as an independent nation by any other power (not surprising, given how far it was from any other power!) However, the Bear Flag Republic gave at least a shadow of legality to the US annexation of California.

This has nothing to do with the fact we don’t let it touch the ground. The rules for the flag was written in the mid 1900’s if I’m not mistaken, like 1940’s. This video is amazing if it was based on facts

We were visiting DC in the early 90’s. Had 4 children and that’s a LOT of walking. My husband took our oldest to see a different exhibit while the rest of us waited in the rotunda of the Smithsonian. It was crowded so I took them upstairs where we could see the doors. Suddenly a wooden panel behind us slid open and there was this flag. It was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had

This story of The Star Spangled Banner, while stirring and patriotic contains many errors. For one, the War of 1812 was not fought between Britain and the "Colonies" but between the United KIngdom and the United States, which had already gained their independance in the treaty ending the American Revolution 29 years earlier (ardent patriots would insist they had been independent since the Declaration of Independence in 1776, but by 1789 all of the "13 colonies" had become "States" and the United States was a recognizes nation by all powers.

Key wrote the poem on the back of an envelope, while imprisoned on a British ship, watching the bombardment. Later, it was set to the tune "Anacreon in Heaven"....a pub drinking song. As a retired Marine of thirty years, this song still stirs me...not to hatred or anything like that, but just to pride in my country...no more nor less than anyone else would have in their own country. And...I now live in Maryland...just a short drive from where all of this happened.

This happened during the War of 1812, where we were, in fact, fighting to take Canada. England was again fighting against the French, and the English needed sailors to man their warships. They would board American ships and take anyone they considered a British subject even if they had become American citizens and in thousands of instances, they took American born citizens. To combat this impressment of Americans into the British Navy the Republicans under President James Madison planned to take Canada and then return it in exchange for the Brits to stop taking Americans, to recognize our rules of citizenship vs their rules of subjugation. So many people think the Star Spangled Banner was written during the Revolutionary War and many more than that don't know anything about the War of 1812.

Anyone with a shred of military history knowledge, and strategic/ tactical training knows that this video is almost complete fabrication. There is no way that the "entire battle fleet" of the Royal Navy would be a months sailing away from the British isles while England was at war with Napoleonic France. Plus, the laws of gravity and leverage would have to be suspended for men to manually hold up a flagpole 90 feet tall weighing around 2 tons.

I'm sorry, but it wasn't the "entire British war fleet", it was 19 ships... The Royal Navy had over 500 ships in 1812....

You, too, have reason to be proud of your country and your people. If you had not stood firm in WW II, there is no telling what the world would have looked like today. Remember those that fought in the Battle of Britain with honor and pride.

Just to put in perspective of actually how short of a time we've truly been close allies, up until 1940 the U.S. actually kept up to date plans of how they would invade the U.K. called War Plan Red.

WTF YOU MEAN THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER WAS COPYRIGHTED!!!!???? sigh.....my guess is that since this is a recording of someone "performing" the anthem that its copyrighting the performance and not the actual anthem. But it makes me angry because I was so looking forward to listening to your mum's reaction as it played. Such a good story and as many have probably pointed out the actual flag is on display at the Smithsonian museum for all to see as it should be.

It is sometimes said that, in the Revolution, the U.S. won the war but lost its objectives. And in the War of 1812, the U.S. lost the war, but won its objectives. History can be very amusing at times. But let us never forget that in both wars, many people died on both sides. And now....we are closest allies.

We won’t quit, seriously from Texas! I will never quit, owe it to the people before me and maybe that’s what’s different between some of us. I’m a bit crazy anyway and don’t care, bless this country!

You can use the copyright-free versions of the anthem. The anthem itself is public domain, but specific performances of it by singers/orchestras might have a copyright.

This story is the reason our flag still waves over every government building, over our schools, our post offices, and most of our homes. As Americans we feel strongly about our flag and our freedom. Were proud of our country and our people. And we wish the same things for other countries as well. And we will fight for freedom until our dying breath.

I was raised in a military family and to think my dad signed up to protect our freedoms and I couldve never seen him again will always make me tear up about american history! Even if beurocrats didnt have the vested interst of the rest of the us citizens at the time or what not, he fought for the meaning behind the flag flying in god's breath over the land of the most free people to ever see this planet. Thank you all who have joined forces for the rights of freedom for this counrty!🇺🇸

Great video. Glad others can know our history. This is why our deceased service members have their casket covered with the American flag. A true honor reflecting all those that gave their lives to defend and keep Us safe. Freedom is never free and comes at a high price and some are ready to defend it always so other generations will never have to know oppression!! We will die standing but never kneeling!

INTERESTING!!!! I couldn't believe that the National Anthem would get copyright-striked so I asked Google "Is the National Anthem Copyrighted", and it said that "According to the PCMA, because the Star Spangled Banner is the National Anthem, it was moved from Copyrighted to the public domain FOR U.S. CITIZENS"... I thought was really interesting and strange at the same time. It's only copyrighted for Non-US Citizens apparently... I learned something new today!

The war of 1812 was started mostly because of England grabbing US sailors and impressing them into the royal navy. England wasn't giving America their due respect claiming these men were originally British citizens they were merely taking back, although many of them were born in America.
