The big northwestern states are not "de-populated." They were never populated, in the first place. Yeah, I am surprised people outside the country know about the electoral college map, and that the minimum number of votes a state gets is 3, while some get more based upon their population. Good upon you! BTW, Washington is the most common place name in the country. There are towns, counties, and streets called Washington all over the place. Father of our country, and all that.

Well, we got the Upper Peninsula because of the Toledo Strip War when those slimy Ohioans stole land from the Michigan Territory. When it came time for the Michigan Territory to become a state, the thieving Ohioans struck and claimed some of OUR land. The Governor of the Michigan Territory raised the Glorious Michigan Militia to defend our boarders. Each of our brave lads was easily a match for any ten members of that disorganized bandit gang of scum known as the Ohio Militia. The two forces started moving towards each other and met at the Maumee River. A great battle ensued and due to the superior nature of the Michigan Militia over the degenerates in the Ohio Militia, the Michigan forces suffered no casualties. Before the Michigan Militia could press their advantage, the US Army arrived and put an end to the war. Through various underhanded and dishonorable political shenanigans (I would not be surprised if bribery and extortion was involved as Ohioans by their very nature really are that low) Ohio was awarded the Toledo Strip. In compensation the Upper Peninsula was made a part of Michigan.

As a New Yorker myself, I can tell you that New York took some land from Vermont. New York is like 95% farmland. New York is actually 90% republican in terms of counties, population wise though it’s mostly Democrat. It’s the only state which has towns named Rome and Carthage next to each other. Other towns nearby are named Mexico, Poland, and Denmark. And if you say you’re from New York people immediately assume you’re from either NYC, Buffalo, or Syracuse. Also Kansas has a lot of history pre-civil war. It was a place of a lot of violence and conflict due to when it was becoming a state, congress gave it a choice to become either a slave state or free state. Northerners and slave owners poured into the state to try and flip the vote in their own favor to get more voting power over the other in congress. This time period of violence and fighting was known as Bleeding Kansas. In the end tho, Kansas became a free state. As soon as Kansas entered the US as a new state, South Carolina got salty and fed up with northerners seemingly getting preference from the us government that South Carolina left the union, followed by the other southern states which formed the confederation of states of America, which sparked the civil war..

I’m an independent, so I really don’t care about how the state swings, but from the 2022 gubernatorial election, it seems like it may stay red for longer than we thought. Also Austin had (and still kinda has) a really bad homeless problem, it was starting to look REALLY bad, but they are finally starting to do something about it, albeit quite slowly. It really left a mark on Austin, as now there’s abandoned homeless shanty towns everywhere littered with trash and human waste, to the point where Houston actually looks prettier lmao. So yeah, if you ever get the chance, come visit us! If you want to visit a city, I’d recommend San Antonio, the river walk is amazing!

As a michigander I will agree that the press coverage we get here is mostly negative and is mostly about Detroit and Flint, but our state is pretty great other than those aforementioned issues, the views and lake fishing here is awesome. The most funny thing is that flint doesn't have clean water yet the state it's in is surrounded by fresh water lakes

As a South Carolinian, I can say that tourism is the main thing that we have going for us along with manufacturing. Myrtle Beach as you mentioned is a pretty popular tourist destination as is Charleston. Charleston mainly because of the history behind it(Black Beard and the start of the Civil War).

Texas is an example of the South's conundrum. Georgia and Texas: 1. Be conservative/Red, 2. Economy booms! 3. People flood in from Blue States. 4. Those people vote Blue 5. States flip to Blue 6. States begin to copy Blue State policies 7. people fled a state to turn the one they fled to into the one they fled. 8. ???? 9. profit

Fun Fact: Hershey, Pennsylvania is where Milton Hershey started the Hershey's candy company. It is essentially a city based around chocolate with a candy themed amusement park and zoo. Milton Hershey was wealthy during the Great Depression and built a massive, beautiful hotel called Hotel Hershey just to give people in the area jobs. He also built a massive boarding school for orphans expense free to them. Also, quite random, but he had a ticket for the Titanic but didn't ride it for some reason, so none of that would've existed if he decided to ride on it.
