I think he was a way harsh on Alaska's flag lol. The smaller stars represent the big dipper which is part of Ursa Major, probably the most well recognized constellation. The one big star represents polaris, the star that people once used, and still often use, to navigate at night. Polaris, known as the north star, sits near perfectly on the north celestial pole. Also Alaska is the most northern located US state, which is why I think Polaris on their flag fits them perfectly.

Also, the flag of the British monarch is quartered, like Maryland's, to represent the Crown's rule over England as well as Scotland and [Northern] Ireland. Maryland's flag represents the arms of the Calverts, as well as the Crosslands, which was the arms of the family of George Calvert's mother. George Calvert was the first Baron of Baltimore and got the rights to found the colony of Maryland.

Regarding Maryland's flag: That is the shield from their state seal (which is just an American way to avoid saying coat of arms) While a lot of states simply put their state seals right in the middle of the flag, in the case of Maryland it takes up literally the entire flag. The banner of arms is from the 17th century by Cecil, the 2nd Baron Baltimore. The yellow and black represents Lord Baltimore's banner (heraldic shield of his father), which was used by pro-Union Marylanders during the Civil War. While the white and red is the Crossland banner (his grandmother) that was used by pro-Confederate Marylanders.

Coming from Maryland, our flag is everywhere in the state. You'll see it all over the place, on flag poles on people's property, on t shirts, hoodies, cups, pretty much anything you can think of. There's some history to the flag as others have pointed out and we're quite proud of it, moreso than other states with their state flags. I'd actually say Maryland's flag is among the most iconic state flags in the USA.

So I'm from Maryland and wanted to say that there's actually some history behind the Maryland flag. The patterns used were the flags of the royal family who first charted Maryland. And while it is still extremely complicated, at least its highly recognizable here. You'll see its design on everything from wooden crabs to a car's wheels, so in that regard it's a successful flag.

As a Eurovision fan I was really hoping to see US state flags in the American Song Contest airing these weeks on NBC. Instead they're only using the map shape of each state and their letter abbreviations! I still think it's quite cool that the show lets every state, even the smallest and least known, have its moment to shine, since they do a presentation of the artist's state before every song. @@vidcas1711 I disagree, a singing competition is in my opinion one of the most fun and entertaining ways of a competition between states / territories. But it does lose some of the hype as all the songs release the day before each show making it hard to pick favorites like people do with Eurovision. Also the heats were probably a bad idea, they should just have done three of them and then move on to the finals directly, and not one heat every monday, but one or two days inbetween each one, as it is now almost not worth following because of the space between them. I also hope they won't start treating it as a tv-programme, but as an actuall competition, like Europe does with Eurovision.

I think the Georgia Flag was specifically designed to reduce the influence of the Confederate flag. And even if it was, the colors chosen for the Confederate flag were based on the US Flag, which they tried to claim at first but it became too confusing on the battlefield. As a flag fan who has memorized every country and every flag of every country, I agree with your tier list mostly, all the SOB designs (Seal on a Bedsheet) flags deserve a low tier, Colorado and Arizona are good top picks. Maryland's is everybody's worst-or-first. It's the heraldry of the Calvert family which founded the colony as a refuge for Catholic Englishmen, and offered freedom of religion not long after Rhode Island. It's one of the most Christian of flags, of which Hawaii's is tops, with three crosses. (Whether the saltires of the Southern states are actually the Cross of St Andrew has been left deliberately ambiguous since the Civil War, so they lose points for that.) Louisiana's pelicans also denote Christian ideals of piety and charity. Oh, and states DO share sovereignty with the Union. It's not all-or-nothing. That's the whole idea behind federalism.

Also, about your point that the states don't control their own defense- They actually can! Twenty-two states have their own militaries, and every state has a National Guard which is ran by the state government except for when the President needs to borrow it. In fact, for a short while the States were entirely in charge of their own defense, and the US went back and forth on whether or not we needed a national army several times between 1776 and 1796.

you're over here hating on Maryland, imo it's one of the most recognizable state flags of all and is a hell of a lot more unique than all the blue background+crest flags, altho that's not saying much. but back to my point about being recognizable, other than some countries like Chad and Romania or [insert every country with a union jack on its flag here], I can recognize most countries just by their flag. that's not true for almost any state tho, but Maryland is one of the few exceptions.

Here is the meaning of the Colorado flag: the bottom blue represents mountains, the top blue the sky, and the white represents snow. This symbolizes west facing commonly thought of “getting over any obstacles coming your way, but always moving forward” the red C represents why Colorado was named Colorado. The Spanish setters called the sunset colorful (translating from Colorado). Most think it was named after the River but no the River is named after the territory. The yellow in the middle represent the sun but also the gold hidden within the mountains. It’s not remembered but Colorado had a gold rush almost as big as California. So there you go…

What makes Florida really stand out is it has a really transparent justice system, and the state's full of journalists who aren't picky on what to report on, meaning that you're more likely to hear about crazy people and events in Florida than any other state, or country for that matter. Alaska's flag actually makes perfect sense. It's the portion of the Ursa Major constellation known as "The Big Dipper" and Polaris, the north star. The north star, used as a cardinal direction reference when the sun is set, directly aligns with the edge of the big dipper, and it is itself the tail of "The Little Dipper" which is itself a portion of Ursa Minor.

Many states had no flag prior to the Columbian Exposition of 1893. To solve that problem the Columbian Exposition of 1893 just put each state's Coat of Arms on the flag and called it that state's flag. Many states then adopted that flag as its flag. Please note many states did not adopt they state flag till decades after the Columbian Exposition of 1893 but many states, when they adopted a state flag, adopted something similar to what was used in the Columbian Exposition of 1893.

There were at least 3 other variants of the Battle Flag that different Confederate Army's used. The one that is always depicted by Hollywood is the Virginia one. The sad truth today is that Liberal Marxist Democracy hating morons have rewritten too much of history to the point that most people are now ignorant of what actually happened or what was. Example, Was the civil war really about slavery? Yes, 2 of the confederate states in its secession declaration listed slavery. However, only 2 of 13 states made that claim! The main complaint that drew succession had to do with Northern States control over Southern State exports. Northern States made it impossible for Southern States to export goods like cotton to English cotton mills and Tobacco to Holland/Nederand. This devastated southern economy. The fear main fear about Lincoln was that Lincoln doubled down on banning more Southern Exports like Indigo, Sugar, Chestnuts and Rice. Most people do not even realize that Before 1900, USA was the leading exporter of Chestnuts in the world. Simply, USA forests east of the Mississippi was 80% made up of Chestnut trees. Lincoln did 2 very evil things that effect us today! Causing the Chestnut blight that has wiped out 99% of the American Chestnut Tree and Causing the spread of the Bowl weevil that devastates cotton crops across the USA to this day! Lincoln before and after he was elected president made very public statements that he would not end slavery. In fact, Lincoln had a proposal sent to the southern States that succeeded and after the disaster of the first battle of Bull Run where US Army was soundly defeated. That proposal was that He (Lincoln) would not free the slaves. That States should have time to transition away from slavery and that all blacks no matter where they were in the USA, North, South or territories and states out west, would be sent back to Africa. Ironically, the African Country of Liberia was made reality and part of Lincoln's plan that he started but was killed before seeing it completed. There would have been a large chance that blacks would have been sent wholesale back to Africa had Lincoln not been assassinated. That last part is my opinion as there is no way to know what a person would actually do had they lived. However, the documents give me extremely strong position in support of this opinion.

I like Maryland's flag, don't understand everyone's qualms with it. Sure it's a bit busy geometrically for drawing from memory, but the shapes aren't too detailed and complicated, it's very recognizable, reminds me of an old coat of arms turned into a flag, and I've seen it integrated into themes and designs pretty well, like sports uniforms and stuff.

Alaska's is great if you know what constellation that is. It's Ursa Major/The Big Dipper, and the star that is separate from the rest is Polaris/The North Star. Navigators would look for Ursa Major in the sky and then follow the line from the bowl of the dipper to Polaris. If they walk/sail towards Polaris they are going north. Ursa Major and Polaris represent Alaska's latitude as the only polar state and the northernmost state, but also how Alaska is famous for exploration. It's "the last frontier", an untamed wildland for frontiersmen, explorers, and aviators to embrace their adventurous spirits. Mariners also famously used Ursa Major and Polaris to find their way, and Alaska is well known for its mariners as well. Plenty of TV series have been made about the wilderness of Alaska and its explorers, mariners, outdoorsmen, and aviators. Such series as Life Below Zero, Deadliest Catch, Alaska: The Last Frontier, and Building Alaska feature such individuals -- one such show was even hosted and produced by the (former) state governor.

I don't expect a Brit to recognize this, but Georgia's flag is literally the original Confederate flag with the state seal slapped in the canton. It's funny that he says it looks like they tried to copy the US flag, because it was later changed after Confederate soldiers kept mixing it up with the Union (US) flag on the battlefield. Funnily enough, the second flag was mostly white with the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (the square version of typical "Confederate flag" everyone thinks of) in the canton. This was to show the "purity of the white race" ("bUt It WaS aBoUt StAtE rIGhTs"), but now everyone thought it looked too much like the white flag of surrender. Before the Confederacy capitulated, they added a vertical red stripe to the fly, and if the CSA had won, they'd probably have ended up using the battle flag. Thankfully, that never got a chance to happen.

In the early 00's, they replaced it with an absolute monstrosity, before a couple years later changing it to this. Gotta love it when the people demand to get rid of the Confederate imagery on their flag, so lawmakers respond by replacing it with the actual Confederate flag.

As an Ohioan I really love our flag. The pendent is really unique and only shared by a few other countries. Also look up how our flag was conceived, it's hilarious. Basically a bunch of state officials forgot that they had to make a flag and randomly grabbed a Civil War cavalry banner at the last minute. That's the reason for the weird shape.
