British Rail-Newton Abbot at Night 5 Jan 1991

A night time vid now from January 1991. In order to film some class 50s west of Exeter i took the Night Riviera (as a seated passenger!) to Newton Abbot and arrived at around 04.00! A move not possible now as i believe the station is unstaffed at night so the sleeper cannot call any more. A cold and wet night, i sought refuge under the canopy and caught on film a pair of 37s on a China Clay working, 50s on NSE Expresses, 47s on parcels and an Inter-City, HSTs and a pair of DMUs. What a bizzare setting: NSE trains all the way out in Devon, decently busy trains around 4am, and not forgetting plenty of freight too! I would pay to go back to a time like that!

It was a good day (and night!) out! I had arrived on the Sleeper from Paddington, my intention was to capture the 50s and NSE stock west of Exeter. At this time Laira was the home depot for the locos on the West of England Line and a few rakes of stock went there each night after finishing service. In the morning the return happened as we see here.....There's more from this day out which will be uploaded over time....

Great loco noir titillation, I almost spilled some banana and coconut smoothie on my keyboard. Strong start with the Silver Trouser Python clay wagons. I used to change there on my evening commute and was regularly privileged to experience a 37 howling through like a banshee, clay wagons in tow. I've never 'spotted' trains but I instantly recognised the name 'Dreadnought'. Had the honour of receiving a barrage of abuse from some hapless berk leaning out of a carriage as it stopped at Teignmouth, maybe two years prior to this, circa 8am, pretty much exactly to the week as I type: early November. How can I pinpoint an event so accurately from a litany of misguided youthful capers? The local annual jazz festival was the backdrop to a Saturday night of legendary insanity. Love the crazy paving platforms. There's nowt like a drop of January evening rain to clear the decks of timewasting, fairweather punters.

Now the sound of a Valenta powering out is very nostalgic, although most people thought of it as a blessed row at the time. According to Realtime Trains, the down sleeper still calls there at 0456.

Excellent. I assume Dreadnought was on the ECS for the first up Exeter to Waterloo? Presumably the person getting off and few boarding were staff.

Yes, that was an ECS move and the person getting off knew the station staff to talk to. I got a few strange looks but the 50s were being chased by then as their time was almost up. There is a lot more from this day, i didn't go home from Exeter (via Plymouth twice!) until around 18.00 ish. Desperate times indeed....

Bloody cold night, if you look at the station clock you can see what time i filmed these shots, 04.27 ect, i must have been mad! But glad that i was desperate enough to do it, all history now....

I did quite a bit of bashing,the length breadth of the BR network through the 1980s,I wasn't as 'hardcore' as some of my mates but I did make quite a few 'desperate' moves !,doing one of the newspaper trains from Victoria to Kent in the early hours of a freezing November morning in 1986 being one of them,the train had one BSK as passenger accommodation but it had no heating and the inside of the windows were cover in ice !.

Was those 50's with the NSE stock going to Waterloo I thought they didn't start running west of Exeter until December 1996. Also what about that 47 with the Network South East stock where was that going?

The 50s were withdrawn in 1992 and there were none in service by 1996. The locoswere maintained at Laira and stock serviced there overnight so a certain amount of trains ran west of Exeter, some ECS and some in service. I can't remember now what the 47 train was, i don't think it was an NSE service but maybe a relief train going back to London, could have worked down the day before with stock from OOC.

The 47 in question is 47826. It was an extended fuel range example. It was renumbered to 47826 from 47637 in may 1989. In 1989 it was allocated to Bristol Bath Road, where it was put in the ILRA pool in 1990, which I think is the Intercity Longe Range (Active?) pool, which was for the cross country 47's. It was reallocated to Crewe Diesel in 1995. I hope this sheds some light on it, and what it might be doing. A stock move? 47826 is still in use today with West Coast Railways at Carnforth. Also 50027 has been preserved as well.
