British soldiers from 1 RIFLES out in Cyprus are keeping alive the 18th century tradition of bugling in addition to their regular military duties.
The days of using the brass instrument to communicate on the battlefield may be long gone, but troops from The Rifles have been taking part in a bugling competition.
1 RIFLES is a light infantry-roled battalion, and the soldiers in Cyprus are part of the Assault Pioneer Platoon, being responsible for engineering and demolition within the unit.
However, in The Rifles, some of the infanteers have secondary roles as buglers.

That this competition is entirely voluntary and the enlisted still want to do it says a lot about tradition in the British military.

Of course the Rifles move so swiftly that their berets cannot keep up, hence the cap badge over the left ear!

Yes. Things have changed since I was in, though our way of fashioning the beret snugly around the cap badge was probably frowned on my those who went before us.

I've noticed that in several recent video clips I've watched - cap-badge migrating away from over the left eye towards the ear.....and a few berets looking like cow-pats!

First and foremost, I hope the Rifles, past and present, will accept the respects and regards from an old American cavalry corporal. A respectful tip of the Stetson to you. I have to give WO2 Lewis a HUGE clap... Brother, that is some **truely** magnificent face fur. I'm a bit jealous, really. You see, I'm a US Civil War reenactor and we're all supposed to look like Grizzly Adams with a huge beard and maybe a little bit crazy, but in 50+ years of trying I can only grow crab grass on my cheeks 🤣 The same goes to the Rifleman at 2:10 A mustache worth the wax!

The army now seems to wear the beret like a Girl Guide. In the past the regulation was that the badge should be over the left eye with beret one inch above the eye, only the paras did their own thing but I think that was because of the shape of the badge.

There is a tradition of Bugle Majors wearing "lamb chop' whiskers. Amongst the most famous of these was Bugle Major Collin Green (Royal Green Jackets) who was the senior BM of the Light Division in the 1970's. He appeared many times leading the massed bands and bugles at major events which were televised and can bee found on KZbin
